Currently the Canucks best defender. A good shut-down guy who can contribute a few points in the process. Ideally a #3 or #4 D on a top team. Currently serves as Canucks #1D, he loves Vancouver but may be forced to move this trade deadline. Could be a good rental and/or a possible re-sign option. Current cap hit is 5,000,000 on the dot.
Last Season:
70GP - 6G - 28A - 34PTs
Has played internationally for Sweden on many occasions and can be a dominant physical force when engaged. Alex has had back issues in the past but he has been healthy in that regard for many seasons. He can lay on the body when he wants too and is extremely smart defensively. Sometimes gets outplayed vs top matchup's in Vancouver but that is largely because he is always out there vs the top guys.
In a 2nd pairing role as a #3 or #4 he can be a steady force and contribute some offence. Edler has spent his entire career in Vancouver though but now with the Sedin twins gone and his deal expiring it is unclear if the team will bring him back. Next season Quinn Hughes (7th OA) and Olli Juolevi (5th OA) are expected to be full-time NHL'ers.
He isn't a perfect defender but he is steady, patient, and has some really desirable traits. We have learned to really appreciate his play over the last few seasons as the team has struggled mightily. He currently serves as the teams #1 PPQB but on a good team, he would be likely on a 2nd PP pairing or strictly in a shutdown role.
What would you guys consider "fair or reasonable" value for a guy like this fella? Vancouver could, in theory, retain salary if your team is under the crunch financially. (Up to 2.5M in salary).
Tell me what you think.
