Kings trade a 1st rounder in 1983 and 3rd rounder in 1981 (First rounder turned out to be Tom Barrasso) for 4 games of Rick Martin and his blown out knees. The Kings history up until 1985 or so has a ton of bad trades of 1st rounders for players that would not be worthy of such compensation.

To be fair what are the odds they use that pick to draft Barrasso? The year after they wasted their 6th overall pick on Craig Redmond.

You also have to remember that scouting even Canadian players back then, wasn't the same as they scout them today. There use to be A LOT of high 1st round misses in the 1970's & 80's.

Tom Kurvers for Toronto's first-round pick in 1991 (Scott Niedermayer).

The Leafs helped the Nordiques tank to ensure they didn't lose Eric Lindros because of this trade. As it turns out, the Devils pick was even better than Lindros.

Yeah, true, but even by the lowly 1980s standards for a defensively terrible team to draft a diminutive college kid that only does offense as a defensive prospect was a poor move.

and they’d just given away larry murphy that year

craig redmond was mickey and dick redmond’s cousin i think. maybe they were blinded by bloodlines? though that description of small guy who only contributes offence from the backend also applies to tricky dick.

i would note though that every other player in the top 12 of that draft played at least 800 games. (and 14, 17, and 18 all also had long productive careers.) it took some skill to miss at #5.

That's not close to the worst Habs trade ever.

FA1Oqfw.gif

^ That was.
this was bad because of how it benefited Colorado, going on to win in 96 and 2001...however people forget the Habs made the play offs in 96 as the 6th seed, made the playoffs in 97 and 98 (defeating Pittsburgh). I doubt keeping Roy would have altered their fortune, that Habs team as constructed by the worse GM of all time Rejean Houle had no chance to win any time soon with or without Roy.

Pierre Lacroix made a series of bad trades following the 2001 cup.

Chris Dingman for a 5th round
Shjon Podein for Mike Keane
Ville Nieminen (who played in the second line during the 2001 cup run) and Rick Berry for Darius Kasparaitis (rental)
Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle (who were 2nd and 3rd line center during the 2001 cup run) for Derek Morris and 2 others
Eric Messier and Vaclav Nedorost for Peter Worrell and 2nd round
Martin Skoula for Kurt Sauer

The worst part about the Chris Drury trade is the lockout and salary cap that forced Peter Forsberg out. If we still had Sakic - Drury 1-2 punch we would've been competitive for longer

This wasn't a trade, but the Habs drafted wickneheiser 1st overall in 1980.... A draft that also had Denis Savard.

You look at those 80s habs teams. They still had a very good defense, and a couple players who owned the selke, but they were short on star forwards.

What if they draft savard? Do they still keep Chelios despite his off ice troubles? That decision to not draft savard kind of led to the habs executing one of their worst deals, when they picked up savard a decade later, as they were still looking to fill that local superstar void when the answer was literally right in their backyard in 1980.

was just thinking about this: i think history will show that tyler johnson is kind of a cullen, while palat and kuch are the real deal.
In an alternate universe, TJ doesn't break his wrist and we somehow slay Chicago during that final. He's never been the same threat since and once his speed left he became what he is now... warm body. Crazy call from 05 though, Kuch was criminally underrated those days

Easily the Blues trading Gilmour, Hunter and junk for Bullard and junk from Calgary.

Giving Pronger away for Brewer is right up there with the Gilmour give away.

And giving away Salvador for a 3rd to the Devils deserves a mention.

That was a pretty good deal. Kaspar was a big help during the playoffs and Nemo had wore out his welcome.

The thing about the Jagr trade is it such a clear delineation point in the franchise. The Jagr "era" had 11 straight playoff appearances and the team was coming off a final four placing. The next four years after Jags were 69-65-58-58 points and last in the division all four seasons (which includes the first year of Crosby's career).

Obviously, the move was largely financial and the return prospects just didn't pan out but it is hard to find a lousier deal.

Its not like somewhat comparable misses dont happen today. Yakupov, Johnson, etc. Theres are plenty of complete misses in the late first round these days that sound indistinguishable from the scouting report at the time.

But situations like the Leafs not even having Clarke on their list in 1969 is the sort of thing that would never happen today. Surprising that happened under the usually level headed Jim Gregory. A really bad miss when you think of how much scarier the late 70s leafs look with a second line of Williams-Clarke-Ellis

i was just thinking about the much-ridiculed (and rightfully so) john cullen and zarley zalapski for ron francis and ulf samuelsson trade

1990 season

ron francis's career year at the time: 101 points

john cullen's breakout year: 92 points (in 72 games, a slightly higher point/game ratio than francis)

1991 season up to the trade

francis: 76 points

cullen: 94 points

1991 regular season after the trade

francis: 11 points

cullen: 16 points

1991 playoffs

francis: 24 games, 17 points

cullen: 6 games, 9 points

1992 regular season

francis: 54 points (70 games)

cullen: 77 points (77 games)

even with pittsburgh's cup, that trade looked a lot different pre-'92 playoffs

but man look at the switch that francis flipped in the playoffs that year—

1992 playoffs

francis: 21 games, 27 points

cullen: 7 games, 3 points

1993 regular season

francis: 100 points

cullen: 50 points (66 games)

1993 playoffs

francis: 12 games, 17 points

cullen: 12 games, 5 points

1994 season

francis: 93 points

cullen: 30 points (54 games)

1995 season

francis: 59 points, 5th in the league, selke

cullen: 37 points (back on the penguins, as francis's #2 center)

1996 season

francis: 119 points, 4th in the league

cullen: 50 points

1997

francis: 90 points, 8th in the league

cullen: 55 points

1998

francis: 87 points, 5th in the league

cullen: treatment for cancer
