Rule 74 – Too Many Men on the Ice
74.1 Too Many Men on the Ice - Players may be changed at any time
during the play from the players’ bench provided that the player or
players leaving the ice shall be within five feet (5') of his players’
bench and out of the play before the change is made.
Refer also to
Rule 71 – Premature Substitution. At the discretion of the on-ice
officials, should a substituting player come onto the ice before his
teammate is within the five foot (5’) limit of the players’ bench (and
therefore clearly causing his team to have too many players on the
ice), then a bench minor penalty may be assessed.
When a player is retiring from the ice surface and is within the five
foot (5’) limit of his players’ bench, and his substitute is on the ice,
then the retiring player shall be considered off the ice for the purpose
of Rule 70 – Leaving Bench.
If in the course of making a substitution, either the player entering
the game or the player retiring from the ice surface plays the puck with
his stick, skates or hands or who checks or makes any physical
contact with an opposing player while either the player entering the
game or the retiring player is actually on the ice, then the infraction of
“too many men on the ice” will be called.

If in the course of a substitution either the player(s) entering the
play or the player(s) retiring is struck by the puck accidentally, the play
will not be stopped and no penalty will be called.
During the play, the player retiring from the ice must do so at the
players’ bench and not through any other exit leading from the rink.
This is not a legal player change and therefore when a violation
occurs, a bench minor penalty shall be imposed.
A player coming onto the ice as a substitute player is considered
on the ice once both of his skates are on the ice. If he plays the puck
or interferes with an opponent while still on the players’ bench, he
shall be penalized under Rule 56 – Interference

Am I missing something for having more skaters on the ice of the sabres.

4 players were on the ice when eichel had the puck I snapped a photo. isnt that too many men?

Looks like this may have distracted Neal. Looks like he waved at the situation shortly before Eichel decided to blow by him. Neal may have distracted Wilson too.

Then they got away with one.
Otherwise, it's just a line change.
With the officiating I saw, I'm hardly surprised they missed it. :shakehead

Agree. They missed (or ignored making) calls all night. Not the A level officiating team IMO.

I do wonder however if there's a different (informal) standard in place for 3 on 3 given that there's more ice to cover? Players are further away from the bench, etc..

If not, Laviolette will be *****ing about it in his post game.

Imagine how many more points this team would have if they had a PK that was ranked 25th instead of dead last or a goalie that could stop the low angle percentage shots?

That's good to know! I thought the player could just jump out the zamboni entrance.

Imagine how many more points they could have if their best player wasn't out a quarter of the season

This is a fun game.

For all the Foligno bashing he was one of our three best players tonight. Zemgus was another. So many other choices though - Reinhart? I mean Eichel of course. Kane? Bad officiating and a couple bad goals and this is an easier Sabres win.

Holy. ****. Omfg.

What a game. This thread... amazing.

Eichel. Jesus. So lackadaisical, and then... see ya!

If this was his worst game of his career I can't wait to see him at his best!

He was great tonight. He also has the uncanny knack of making some of his best plays when his line is changing so he's often caught in the attacking zone looking for guys who are on the bench.

Hey guys wanted to ask a question

Saw Fedun in overtime at the very beginning of that amazing Eichel highlight. He was a great story with the Oilers until he broke his leg on a freak play. Always wished him the best.

Was wondering if you guys have any long term hopes for him. I glanced at the title of your IR thread and saw what I thought was your entire top 6. So is he just taking advantage of a dire situation or is there potential there??

Not really. Defensively, he's really bad. He's done well enough filling in while we've had injuries, but I don't see him as more than a fill-in. Still a useful player to have on the roster for situations like right now.

He's been quite good and I want him signed, at worst he's injury insurance. He should be somewhere in the NHL. He gets out of position because he's the only defensemen we have who's very anxious to get into the offense.

Just caught up to the game.

Girgs got that fire going with decent line mates and ice time.

From a technical point Jack had a garbage game. Relative to his talent at least. But that talent let him dominate the ot with dashes you knew were going to end in a goal or great chance.

When he gets his head out of his butt and plays at a superstar pace he will be one of the top 5 producers in the league.

Until then he is a supremely talented boy.
