Both CBS Sports and ESPN like the Sox draft so far. :thumbu:

from cbssports.com:

14 - Red Sox
Kyle Teel, C, Virginia
: A collegiate backstop has been selected in the first half of round one in each of the past five drafts. Teel, the ACC's Player of the Year, extends that streak to six. He's a high-quality athlete who saw action in the outfield earlier in his collegiate career. His future is very much behind the plate, where he wields a strong arm with an understanding of how to manipulate his body to best present pitches. Offensively, Teel recovered from a rough cameo in last summer's Cape Cod League, solidifying himself as the best catcher in the class by hitting .366 with a 14.4% strikeout rate in conference play.

No. 14 pick: Red Sox take Kyle Teel
I don't think Boston expected Teel to be on the board here. He's the best catcher in the draft class and he's a lefty bat who can bang. That's rare behind the plate. Teel is our No. 7 draft prospect. Really great pick for the Red Sox. I'm surprised Teel lasted that long. ( Mike Axisa - CBS Sports )

No. 50 pick: Red Sox take Nazzan Zanetello
Red Sox with another nice pick here at No. 50: Nazzan Zanetello, a high school shortstop. I know a few teams had him on their radar in the first round. Boston gets Teel in the first round and Zanetello here in the second. Really nice draft for them. ( Mike Axisa - CBS Sports )

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 14 Red Sox: Kyle Teel, C, Virginia -- Teel is a high-caliber athlete with a good arm who projects to stay behind the plate. He successfully course-corrected after a brief but tough cameo in last summer's Cape Cod League, and profiles as a contact-over-power hitter at the game's highest level. He easily could've been selected in the top 10, making this a good value for the Red Sox. Grade: A ( R.J. Anderson - CBS Sports )

from espn.com:

14. Boston Red Sox: Kyle Teel, C, Virginia

Who is Teel? A three-year starter at Virginia, Teel was named 2023 ACC Player of the Year on the strength of a .407/.475/.655 slash line. A left-handed-hitting catcher, his draft stock took off this season as continued defensive improvement behind the plate solidified his chances of sticking at the position professionally.

Why the Red Sox took him here: The Red Sox don't really have a long-term solution at catcher as current starter Connor Wong possesses more of a backup's skill set -- and Teel's hitting ability means he can move quickly if the defense develops. He is a left-handed hitter with an ideal swing for Fenway Park and good contact skills despite a violent swing, as well as a plus throwing arm. At the minimum, this looks like a pretty safe pick since Teel projects as a high probability major leaguer. ( Dave Schoenfeld - ESPN )

Until Sox get 10 games over they are in the second tier

They got money and there prospect pool courtesy of Dombrowski & Bloom is getting better and better (DD was GM when Bello signed and Duran drafted)

They need a good young starter arm to add second half and have prospects

Sox have Star or premier player (MLB top 100) at every position
C Teel
1B Casas
2B story/Yorke/Romero
SS Mayer
3B Devers
OF Rafaela
OF Duran
OF Bleis

Yoshida a stud for foreseeable future as well

They got guys behind them as well

They need pitching though and today should go heavy in arms

Totally agree with you. I would draft at least three pitchers with our next five picks and load up with arms later in the draft. The more pitchers we take, the better chance of getting a good one. I think Teel could be a starter in no more than three years. He has the athleticism to play corner outfield and some DH to save his legs and play around 110-115 games at catcher. The huge bonus with him is his ability to run and control the running game.

The Yankees are starting to panic

Being the third wildcard is not a terrible option.

  • The top two division winners in each league receive a bye and advance directly to the Division Series
  • The lowest-seeded division winner and three wild card teams will play in the Wild Card Series
  • The four participants in the Wild Card Series are the division winner with the worst record and the three non-division winners with the best records
  • The division winner is automatically the No. 3 seed regardless of whether one or all of the other wild-card teams has a better record
  • The lowest wild card team faces the division winner with the lowest record
  • The other two wild card teams play each other
  • The series is a best-of-three, with the higher seed hosting all three games
  • The winners of the Wild Card Series move on to face the top two seeds of each respective league in the League Division Series
  • The victors move on to the League Championship Series to determine the pennant winners that face each other in the World Series

Firing the batting coach is just so Steinbrenner.

Last game before the break wasn't worthy of being called major league baseball.

Sox start minor league battery, A's an almost minor league lineup.

A's starting pitcher (JP Sears) was as good as shortstop Tyler Wade was bad.

Yoshida's HR looked like a Yogi Berra homer. Classic bad ball hitting. With power.

Outhit 11-6, Sox had no business winning this one.
