That's odd for Ottawa. Normally ALL the RFAs file for arbitration on our team.

What a weird summer.
All your arbitration eligible RFAs did. Its just the one guy with arb rights according to cap friendly.

Tkachuk, Laine, Dubois are the 3 big ones. Other notable players are Nicolas Roy and Luke Kunin.

Laine, based on what Aaron Portzline tweeted last night, appears to be fairly close to a deal with the CBJ.
The tweet felt speculative, Laine has another good option to accept his QO by July 22nd and become UFA after this season.

Ditto Tkatchuk with his 9M QO. Tkatchuk's now-expired SPC was built for high QO.

Bratt and Trenin are going to be interesting cases. Bratt is going to get paid and I think NJD will look to move him. Trenin is the type of player who's value doesnt really show up in counting stats

The Tkachuk one is big right? They gotta get him to arb ASAP or sign him or else he gets his QO right?
The arb award is gonna be a one year SPC anyway and walk him into UFA just the same as the QO, just a little bit more pissed off.

He doesn't necessarily choose to accept his QO, though it would be a good option for him.

Yeah, it's significant.

By deciding not to file for arbitration, Tkachuk keeps his options open. He can sign his 9 M QO before it expires on Friday and put all the pressure on the Flames on what comes next with UFA coming on July 1st 2023.

OR he can sign a long-term with the Flames.

OR He can decide NOT to sign the QO and open the door to possibly being a holdout in late September and telling the Flames he wants to be traded to a team of his choice that will give him a long-term contract.

Avoiding the holdout scenario is probably why the Flames should bring him to arbitration before tomorrow's 5 PM ET deadline.

If a player filed for arbitration doesnt the team have the option for one or two years? Or is that not the case with one year left until ufa?

Exactly what you say, the award can be only for one year if UFA is only one year away.

Pros: it puts pressure on both sides to voluntarily negotiate a good (long) SPC before the hearing and sign that.

Cons: if it goes to the hearing, the team telling the player why he's crap and shouldn't be paid is a good way to wreck the relationship for good.

Only if bratt flat out tells the team he has no interest in signing. The team has already given him a long term offer, so moving him does not appear to be the preferred action

I think everyone knew Tkachuk would be taking his QO after Johnny left right? This doesnt seem shocking when all reports are that he wants out
Maybe Tkachuk knew that if he asked for arbitration that he wouldn’t be able to gain leverage in negotiations by holding out during training camp and the beginning of the season like his brother did with Ottawa.
