how did he only get an AHL contract? former 3rd round pick with great numbers in college

Tough time to be a free agent goalie prospect. I was a little surprised that Strauss Mann opted to sign in Sweden instead of going back to Michigan for his senior year.

Just not a ton of open spots for a guy like Petruzzelli, especially with him having to wait until mid-August. Most teams have already filled their goalie spots for the next season by then.

Also there were an inordinate amount of goalies drafted in 2018, so a lot of those guys are in Year 1/2 of their ELCs and teams would rather give them a chance rather than bring in another guy. A lot of teams want an older AHL guy with some NHL experience in case of injury as well.

The Leafs have had a few signings like this the last couple years: Petruzelli, Justin Brazeau, Noel Hoefenmayer.

The Leafs give them more money on an AHL deal than they would earn in the minors on an ELC and it only ties them up for 2 years instead of 3. I think it's a win-win for both sides since they're not likely to see NHL games during this time period.
