FINALLY! The day that we draft nuts look forward to every year!!
Here is my final top 9 ranking ('cause we ain't drafting a goalie in the 1st):
1. C - USA - Beniers: Safest pick and true center, great leadership, work ethic, motor. Worrisome hands and natural finishing. - Larkin/Bergeron attributes. I think Murray rates Beniers here and wants that 1-2 Center punch, but it is likely he won't end up being the a top 2 player within the top 10 picks as he doesn't flash high offensive upside. Murray would still want Beniers as he is impatient, and Matt could be ready for 2022-2023.
2. F - SWE - Eklund: Most offensively refined/complete, and could be ready within a year like Beniers. He might be one of the most proven players in a crazy COVID year which gives him a higher ranking. Would be a surprising high pick as short players 5'10 and under aren't usually picked in the top 3. I just wished he had dynamic skating and some bite like all great small players have (maybe he has this and hasn't shown it yet).
3. D - SWE - Edvinsson: He's growing on me as a big home run pick. Many pure offensive players fade before their 30s whereas 2-way guys can play well into their 30s and they help win Stanley Cups. Madden and Co. might think his flawed hockey IQ could be stemming from coordination or him exploring his limits.
4. D - USA - Hughes: My previous top hopeful... who wouldn't want to add a dynamic skating Hughes brother? I worry that he is too much projection and hasn't been tested as much. It is too bad he wasn't able to play at the WJC. He might be lower on our list because he needs at least 2-3 years development.
5. D - USA - Power: The footage I've seen and Scouching's report on him got to me... I like players with elite skills and play with high intensity. It worked for us with Zegras/Drysdale... both have elite skills and fire. Powers has great size and he looks like an intelligent player. But he scares me off with his coordination and lack of intensity. He might be a guy who just matured 2 years earlier than his peers. He did look better at the WC, but it might have been more "hey he looked ok there as an 18 year old" and not "wow, he is so amazing at..."
6. C - CAN - McTavish: The prototyical Landeskog/Benn throwback that every team wants. Looks physically close to being ready and tested against men's league. He can be a risky pick too as you never know how his game will translate... i.e. will he be another Colin Wilson?
7. W - CAN - Guenther: He was on fire and shot up the boards mid-season. However, he got alot of attention because there weren't as many games to be played. Plus he did well against weaker competition and not as well at the WJC. He might still be growing physically and he does have a great shot, so he would fit our organizational needs.
8. D - CAN - Clarke: He looks exceptional as a PP specialist without a cannon of a shot. I just hate his skating... scouts absolutely love him and think they can fix his skating, but I think that's an enormous risk to take. Plus I don't like his interviews... not sure how I can explain that haha.
9. C - CAN - Johansson: He flashes some amazing hands, but his game is too similar to Zegras and he isn't as good of a competitor or skater. He might be more of a playmaking winger, and we need finishers.
Interesting targets by round (if some players fall further than expected which is very possible for this year):
2: W Rosen, W Stankoven, D Heimosalmi, W Koivunen, W Poltapov, D Buium
3: W Kisakov, D Kirsanov, C Stjernborg
4: C Winterton, W Huuhtanen
5: W Knak, D Moser, G Zhigalov
6: W Ciona, D Sjöholm
I am sure our team will be drafting more North Americans though.... and will likely be players I haven't even heard about haha.
Anyhow, its such an important day for our organization's future, LETS GO!!!!
