Old Man Mike wanted to keep the streak going while he was alive. Who's to argue against the wishes of a dying man after all he did for the team?

Myth.
And not even a good one.
A good one would be - Ilitch didn't want the team to start sucking while he was trying to fleece the public for an arena deal.
But even that doesn't wash.

Or maybe the old man wanted to spend his money before he died. It's not like you can take it with you.

In any case, it was his decision, and I'm good with it regardless of his motivation. The guy did so much for the Wings, I really don't see how any fan can complain. Compared to Abe Pollin, Mr. I is a f'ing godsend.

It wasn't his decision.
That's a myth.
It was Holland's decision.

I've never read anyone credible put that decision on Ilitch.

Mr Ilitch was a great team owner for fans.

It's quite clear that in his later days, he was more concerned with a winning Tigers' team than a winning Wings' team.
Baseball and the Tigers were his passion.

Here’s my top 10 and ultimately what I think each player becomes.

1. Eklund - top line forward.
2. Clarke - top pair defenseman
3. Beniers - second line center.
4. Hughes - top four defenseman
5. Wallstedt - elite goalie
6. Power - middle pair defenseman
7. McTavish - middle six center
8. Johnson - second line winger
9. Guenther - second line winger
10. Lysell - second line winger

It's been mentioned in the press numerous times. If you want to call that a myth, then so be it.

He spent money on both, the Wings were capped out even after his death. If it wasn't for the cap, he more than likely would have spent more.

If you want to rag on Holland, I don't care. I think the game has passed him by. He's making the same mistakes in Edmonton now.

So this kind of pisses me off. 17 year old guy gets 18 year old girl to perform a mutually agreed upon sexual act and takes a pic while shes doing it. Scummy, yes....illegal in N.A.? No. Illegal in Sweden. He then shares it with teammates in an attempt to fit in. Again, very scummy and very stupid. Still, not illegal in N.A. but it was in Sweden. He has apologized to everyone involved and attended therapy and been forthcoming with teams and interviewers. What pisses me off is that these media people have been sitting on this story and waited until a week before the draft to get maximum effect. The kid screwed up, did something incredibly immature, and now the angels of the internet are up in arms.
Would I be upset if it was my daughter? Yep, but then again, my daughter wouldnt be performing oral sex on a guy who she just met and who's only been in the country for a few days....
This is a f***ed up take. Get out of here with that. It's hella illegal everywhere. It's nonconsensual pornography. Do NOT make the abuser as the victim here. This story has been out a long while. He has NOT apologized to the woman aside from a text. She has NOT forgiven him. Being a professional athlete is a privilege, not a right. I would not want this wretched turn on my team. Let him go be a used cars salesman somewhere.

Agree with all of this, except for Clarke. I think he is gonna be a top four defenseman, not a top pair. His skating will be a hinderance

You want his life to be ruined and have said as much
Speaking only for myself, I don't want anybody's life to be ruined. But I do want consequences for illegal actions. And "I'm sorry" does not count as sufficient consequences.

If a kid does something really stupid and has to wait a year or longer before getting a chance to play professional sports because of it, that's not ruining his life. That's following through on what happens because of the CHOICE HE MADE. I'm not asking him to be homeless while wearing a scarlet letter in the meantime. But it's not my problem if his dumb decision ends up delaying his dreams.

He has already said that he would prefer to not be drafted this year so that he can prove himself as a person and player. Counseling, paid fine, psych eval, been open about things with teams during interviews, allowed the press to publish the details at great cost to his personal reputation, but no he hasnt had any consequences. But still, you're at least being reasonable and not just vindictive talking about how deserves nothing better than being a greeter at walmart. Thanks for not personally attacking me. Would have been nice if my long, thought out response to a personal attack wasnt just wiped out, especially when it went into detail with my thought process on the situation.

I'm not saying he's had zero consequences thus far. I'm saying that I have no pity on him for having those consequences continue for the next year.

If he stays clean and fights all the way through this to get a second chance, then good for him. If not, then he made his bed and he can lie in it, even if that means hockey is no longer an option.
