“Defected player” means the NHL doesn’t have transfer agreement with that league, which means the KHL. Those make the rights indefinite.

It should be 4 years because he’s 19 when he’s signing. (But maybe I’m wrong.)

I finally did check on this and yeah he's not a defected player, but I think 8.6.b.ii is what would apply to him - a player who leaves major junior as a 19 year old, drafted as an 18 year old. Devils would have his rights up to the fourth June 1 after the draft, so June 2024.

Where it does get complicated is that Pytlik was 19 when he was selected, but I should think for the purposes of drafting, he was considered an 18 year old.

Probably more likely that Mercer is in the AHL next year, but does he potentially challenge for a spot? He has had a great year and looks like a great pick.

I think he is going to be given every opportunity to win a spot

Mercer on the 3rd line with Kuokkanen and maybe a FA 3C would be tremendous
I don’t see why it’s better for him to start in the NHL and, wow, the expectations for this kid’s performance next year are going to be sky high.

oh I am totally fine with him starting in the AHL...I just think that he already seemingly does all the little things that coaches love and will have a real shot to be on the team to start

Here's the shift-by-shift for Mercer's game last night:

Given the reports I was hearing I was expecting more frenetic energy. But I thought he was pretty efficient out there. Smooth skater, good anticipation, good positionally, good skills.

I think him starting next year in the NHL is pretty ambitious though.

Are we sleeping on Cole Brady? At 6'5 is a huge goaltender and he put up some impressive numbers as 19 year old freshman on a hot garbage team.

I don't think we are sleeping on him really. I am excited to see how he progresses but it takes time with goalies.

His team really struggled in front of him some nights so it impressive he put up good numbers still.

We'll see how he progresses, I'm hoping to find an excuse to visit a buddy in Phoenix and watch ASU next season. At least from the couple games I watched when they played against Michigan, my knee jerk thought was that Brady looked like Keith Kinkaid. Evan DeBrouwer went from a .919 sv% season to .888 sv% last year for those who want to make questionable extrapolations with data. Part of that was ASU's top two D went pro and then mix in having to play an all road schedule against Big 10 teams. Looks like ASU has a large recruiting class for next season (including Niedermayer and Doan's kids), so hopefully they're more competitive. I thought they made quite a bit of progress in a short amount of time building up the program, but last season was just an oddity with the schedule.

I see that it's the 20 year old Jackson Niedermayer (a forward) headed to ASU. I see his youngest son Joshua is a defenseman and draft eligible next year. Not eye popping numbers in the BCHL but I'm no scout.
