Historically the Rays do not seem to prioritize offense from the catcher position- they value intangibles and defense over everything. Ronaldo Hernandez is definitely not the kind of catcher they seem to value.

I personally find value in a guy that can hit .240 with pop from that position if the glove is below average. Hopefully he can become that. You can’t have a butcher back there but it seems like he has a good arm- he just needs a lot of refinement with his technique

isnt it a little strange the best minor league development team in the league traded him for perceived peanuts?

He’s the third best catching prospect in the system and may need a 40 man spot upcoming which TB needs. He could have been considered expendable to them. Also, they’re weirdos and probably think they can turn Springs into a legit weapon.

there is a lot of statcast and metric stuff that like Springs, it’s not surprising they like him

I’ve got zero concerns about his age advancement, he’s where he would be. Would’ve been in AA last year

It’s always good when a team can keep a budding superstar.

Not the Sox but a few other teams that are in that market for a player like Tatis, will pay that price
For what it's worth, I literally heard Chaim Bloom say the other day that he wasn't opposed to giving out long-term, big money deals under the right circumstances.

But he also said that if you study those deals, the vast majority of the value to the team comes in the front half, and that the organization needs to be in a place to take advantage of that. Reading between the lines when it comes to Mookie, if the Red Sox thought they weren't in a place where they could be competitive for the next three or four years, and if they also thought the Mookie likely had maybe five prime seasons left, then it wouldn't have made sense to give him the kind of long-term contract he ultimately received.
