The longest NHL game went to six overtimes. That was in the 1936 Stanley Cup finals. Mud Bruneteau's goal gave the Detroit Red Wings a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Maroons.
As for the longest game:

"March 12, 2017: Joakim Jensen of the Storhamar Ishockey ends the longest hockey game in history, scoring with 2:46 left in octuple overtime for a total of 157:14 of overtime, and 217:14 of hockey played. It was Game 5 of the quarter-finals of the 2016–17 GET-ligaen playoffs against the Sparta Warriors in the CC Amfi. About 1,000 out of the 5,500 people that attended the game watched the entire game. The game started at 18:00 and ended at 2:32 the next morning"

I saw that! They were outshot 93-96. It blows my mind.

This 4 OT is either a sign of what's to come in this series, or whoever wins is gonna sap the confidence from the other team, and steamroll them the rest of the way.

Really nice defensive play by Sergachev there to block the pass from down low to the slot.

He's become pretty underrated IMO.

Dude, Gerbe was out cold there from that unintentional elbow. That's a concussion for sure, don't let him sit back down.

Edit: good they're pulling him.

So I decided to watch the highlights from all the Leafs/Jackets games to see if I could pick up what the hell is wrong with Toronto. I know highlights don't paint the whole picture, but there's a couple things that I picked up that are major issues:

- They have minimal to no net front presence. The most they get outside of drive-byes is the Clifford line. The goalie can see everything that is fired at him. Of course they had problems scoring. 2 of the 3 goals they had in their Game 4 comeback had a guy planted right in front. Do that more often maybe?
- They're coverage while defending the rush is hilariously bad. The middle of the ice is always wide open because so many times the back-checker decides to rush after the puck carrier who is already covered.
- Their defense (forwards included) watch the puck while defending way too often. Seems to be very little awareness of who's where in their zone.
- I don't know if it's just their demeanor, but their top guys play like they know they're good and pucks will just go in for them at will. Lots of times it looks like their playing in a scrimmage.

As a side node, HOLY f***, Tampa has 80 shots?

At this point, one of the goalies is going to get exhausted and put the puck in his own net just so he can go take a shower.

This game started 5 and a half hours ago

The 8th longest playoff game in history... and the way it's going it could go for a lot longer still. Both teams are remarkably disciplined positionally.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the last OT that went longer than this so far was the Pens Flyers game when Primeau ended it in 5th OT
