question, do we know what bonuses have been reached this season or is that something that cant really be answered until next year?

capfriendly has the bonuses already added to aav on a number of canucks under their individual pages but im not sure that means they have been reached or not.

if they have then we are looking at over 4m rolling into next years cap.

There was something about this in the Athletic. Between Hughes and Pettersson there'll be a $1.7M overage.

So 1.7 for both as opposed to 3.4? That helps.

3.4 would be if they left room for next year's bonuses as well. If not, that other 1.7 (assuming that they earn those bonuses) would apply on their 2021-22 cap.

Wouldn’t really be fair because Toffoli will be getting paid and Leivo maybe comes back for similar dollars.

In any case, if Toffoli is re-signed then I think Virtanen will he packaged with a bad contract in order to get a defender on a good term.

An absolutely insane scenario (pure madness):

Canucks miss the Playoffs.

Vancouver wins the Lottery. Lafreniere is taken 1st overall.

Eichel emphatically requests a trade in the offseason after July 1st. Threatens to simply not show up to camp if he's not moved.

Boeser + Podkolzin + Gaudette + 1st 2022+ 2nd 2021 + 2nd 2022 for Eichel

Roll into next season with a top 6 of:

Miller - Eichel - Pettersson
Lafreniere - Horvat - Pearson

Use the 20+ million in cap space to duct tape the team together and re-sign Markstrom and we good to go.

Here's my insane scenario:

The league cancels the remainder of the season and holds an abbreviated playoffs with no live spectators.

As a result of the lost revenue and the tanking Canadian dollar, next year's cap drops to $61 million. Each team is given three compliance buyouts to get under the cap. Canucks use theirs to dump Ericksson, Baertschi and Sutter.

Tanev and Markstrom (and all UFAs) are screwed by the circumstances and wind up signing cheap short term deals.

As training camp approaches and it appears North America is still under threat from COVID-19, the NHL postpones the 20/21 season indefinitely.

The Aquilinis are forced to sell the team as the family business empire collapses. The new owner fires Benning and, in a cost saving move, hires Harman Dayal as the GM.

In early 2021, a vaccine finally appears and the league puts together a short season with a full playoffs.

The Canucks reach the finals and lose in 7 games to Toronto led by Cory Schneider who, after being bought out by New Jersey, resurrects his career with the Leafs (managed by Mike Gillis after Kyle Dubas is fired).

All the while, Canucks fans continue to argue about drafting, trades, and free agent signings dating back 10 years.

My insane scenario is:

Benning signs 4 bottom 6 players to the following:

Eriksson to 6x6, adds an NTC, and bonus loads it so it can't be bought out
Beagle to 3x4 adding an NTC
Sutter to 4.375x5 adds an NTC
Ferland to 4x3.5M who plays 14 games for the team

and, as a result, is unable to re-sign Tanev and Markstrom.

...oh wait.

So hypothetically if the season cancels outright do the Canucks keep 1st in 2020 or do devils get it? Or would canucks get to choose if they get 2020 or 2021?

We’ll find out this offseason. He hasn’t been forced to until now. This will make or break him from ownership.

I doubt that. He's been a train wreck for his entire reign here and ownership has always shown him love. I think they enjoy having a guy that will take orders and do all the things they want.....

We need a top 4 defenseman and have to shed cap this offseason...

Might sound biased because he is a Fin, but one of the best players in the europe this season was Mikko Lehtonen.

Mikko Lehtonen at eliteprospects.com

He had a monster season leading Jokerit, being league leading scorer as a Dman. (Also leading his team in scoring)

(Paraphrasing what is being said about him.):
Poised puck-mover, handles bigger forwards and comes up ice with the puck with authority. Has a strong offensive game and generates chances. Good all-around player.

He is a free agent and looking to make the jump to the NHL.

Honestly would love to take a chance on him. Our defence needs a complete overhaul besides Hughes.

And the pick we received, plus the cap space that we freed up, was immediately thrown away on Brandon Sutter (given first retro NTC in NHL history LOL).

Brandon Sutter's contract set TWO precedents:
- The first retroactive NTC in NHL history (have there been any other since? Not sure)
- The highest cap number ever for a forward who has never broken 40 points.

Mind-boggling.

Sutter actually had a 40p season in 09-10. It doesn't make the deal any worse, as it was 6 seasons before the deal.

Is that % or actual $

Cus I've always felt weird when that keeps getting repeated and I just realized its probably because the cap keeps going up and it was bound to happen IF THAT IS $, not %.

As of today, it's still by $, which is remarkable. However, you're right, as the cap goes higher eventually we will have to start saying by percentage.

We've come close a few times, J-G Pageau got a $5M deal with a 43 point career high. Alex Killorn got a $4.5M deal with a 41 point career high (he's since gone on to post multiple seasons in excess of 40 points). Eventually someone else will join Sutter in this club.
