So ISS has Byfield 7th. Are they due for an update or they just against the grain?

McKeen has him 3rd.

Raymond is 2nd in both rankings.

Why does he stink? All I’ve seen is everyone on here drooling over him but I don’t know much about him?

He let up two goals on the first two shots of the tournament so now everyone is shitting on him lol (not just this thread, but the main board and reddit)

The reality is he should've stopped the first one, but that second goal was a beauty. Absolute snipe on a 2 on 1, Askarov had no chance.

Askarov glove side is weak. 4 goals on 12 shots so far.

Different tournament, but I remember how good he was last year against Hughes and Team USA, but damn is he struggling this game.

I'm sure he will be good, but no way you use a top 5 pick on this guy, especially for someone that may not come over for how many years?

Askarov looking very shaky. He’s jumping around in the net and he also plays deep. The last sequence there to end the second period he was just jumping around and his stick was hanging out in the air leaving the five hole wide open. Luckily his defenseman blocked the shot.

I was really excited to watch him today but if you focus on his play, he looks completely awful today

ironic overreactions aside, I'd prefer not to draft a goalie in the 1st round. Blackwood is proving his mettle, I'm hoping we do the standard mid to late round goalie pick. If we end up getting a 2nd round pick in a trade and Askarov falls that far, maybe then.

I would sprint to the podium in the scenario that Askarov fell to our second 1st round pick. The kid is an absolute stud, has a .922 in the VHL (equivalent to our version of the AHL at 17 years old) and posted a .920 in his KHL game with SKA this year. He's the best goalie prospect since Carey Price and we would be stupid to take the 15-20th best skater in the draft over a talent like Askarov. Apparently all of our arm chair GMs are now Askarov experts because he gave up a few to the Czechs though.

This just confuses me. You might take him in the 2nd round? If he's there, which he 100% won't be, we would be stupid not to draft him. Hell, we'd be stupid not to take him with Arizona's 1st if he fell that far.

He's a top 10 talent, I don't care about position.

Again, because I feel some may misinterpret what I'm saying, I'm not saying we need to draft Askarov wherever we are. I'm saying the aversion to drafting a goalie in general is asinine. Take the BPA and it's 100% possible that he is that. And I'll say I am rather encouraged by Blackwood's play. But it's crazy to ignore how good Askarov is.

And how can we be confident that any of the translates to the NHL? Goalie is a weird position and difficult to project, The Rangers got Shestyorkin in the 4th round and now he looks like he could be a stud.

EXACTLY. I never understood this fascination with Askarov.

So he's playing great in the VHL.

So what?

No matter how much one wants to say it's like the AHL, it's not.

And there's no guarantee that a Goaltender will pan out despite the Hype (if any).

It's not an aversion to drafting goalies, it's an aversion to drafting goalies in the 1st round, and it's not asinine, it's rational. Do you really think that in the 6 years between Vasilevsky and Spensor Knight that there were no goalies that were talented enough at age 17 to belong in the 1st round? Why do you think none got picked? It's because goalies are harder to project, and you're nearly as likely to find your stud goalie in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th round as you are in the 1st or 2nd.

The only way Askarov falls far enough for us to take him with a non-top ten pick is if there’s a major KHL/Russia red flag. In which case I’d pass too. And I’d rather not pick a goalie top ten regardless, using a top ten draft pick on a goalie is a luxury we can’t afford.

You may be right if the GMs buy into the hype around him, but I don't understand it. The goaltending position just seems to be a total shit show in terms of figuring out who is going to be good from year to year. Look at what the Panthers, Lightning, and Canadiens are getting for the $30+ million they're spending on their starting goaltenders this year. Meanwhile the Islanders get outstanding goaltending from seemingly pedestrian goaltenders.

At the very least, it seems like the performance of the team has a large impact on the performance of a goaltender in a way that it just doesn't on skaters (e.g. McDavid's production when the Oilers were horrible) so you can roll into the playoffs with Jordan Binnington and win a cup or you can roll into the playoffs with Vasilevskiy and get bounced in the first round.

Boys its Quinton Byfield/Jamie Drysdale time, forget about Russian Rick DiPietro. Not to mention second Pair goal scorer Kevin Bahl and first pair Ty Smith.

You're not as more likely to get a goalie later than in the first. You're right, they are harder to project but there are some prospects that are much farther along than their peers, and they get chosen early and it usually pans out - especially ones that have received the praise Askarov has gotten.
