Probably not the worst time to get this thread started.

I would assume Larkin is yet again a lock for this team. He will likely wear a letter.

I’m curious if Kane gives it another go. My hunch is he sits this one out after going last season.

I anticipate Quinn Hughes going. The question is will Jack be invited as well?

I don’t even have a guess at a preliminary roster but I expect this to be a good group. It’s nice to see the US taking the WC a bit more seriously.

I think Quinn is more likely than Jack. Jack will go play at the U18s.

I think Quinn is a lock. I wouldn’t be shocked if USA Hockey invited Jack, I just don’t know if he would accept.

From the Eastern Conference off the top of my head. Think the last WC JVR went to was 2009. Gostisbehere has recently turned down the WC. Brady Tkachuk maybe, Bobby Ryan won’t go. Santini, Wood, Boyle, Kincaid and Joey Anderson from New Jersey. Vatrano and Bjugstad Florida. Yandle and Trochek never go. Kreider and Hayes might be on playoff teams. Skeji, DeAngelo and Lindgren from the Rangers maybe. Slavin and Faulk from Carolina. Thompson, Eichel, Mittlestadt, Bogosian and McCabe from Buffalo.

DeBrincat, Saad, Murphy and Kane Chicago. Brown, Forbort, Thompson and Martinez LA. Stephan, Schmaltz, Keller, Galchenyuk and Dvorak Arizona. Maroon and Sanford for St. Louis. Maroon will probably be on a playoff team. Yamamoto and Jones from Edmonton. Gaudette, Motte and Sutter Vancouver. Gibson, Terry, Manson and Jones Anaheim.

Total guessing game. About 70% of those, maybe more, will say no, in the playoffs or be injured.

With Matthews signing his extension, and if the Leafs disappoint in the 1st.rd. against either the Bruins/Canadiens or TBL, Matthews would then be available to join Eichel and Larkin on Team USA. That would be truly epic and a scary proposition for other Top Contenders (Canada and Sweden). Hopefully Marner signs his extension in short order and Tavares and Marner can even out the odds a bit.

Keller- Eichel- DeBrincat
Kreider- Larkin- Palmieri
Tkachuk- J. Hughes- Terry
Coleman- Poehling- Gaudette
Wood, Anderson

Slavin- Pesce
Butcher- Faulk
Martinez- Murphy
Q. Hughes- Fox

Campbell
Demko
Oettinger

I didn’t include any players on the roster that are UFA or RFA’s. I also only took players off teams that are currently out of a playoff spot, as it’s hard to predict what teams will get bounced in the playoffs. This obviously isn’t the best roster they could send and it takes some guessing on what players would actually go/be invited. I tried to model the roster based on what USA Hockey has sent in the past, they tend to lean younger and give young guys a chance. I actually applaud them for it, I like giving guys that normally wouldn’t get a shot the chance to don their national team sweater.

nearly every team is still in the playoff hunt.

but for now seems like the only sure bets would be:

Quinn Hughes
Jack Hughes
Brady Tkachuk
Dylan Larkin - Captain
Colin White
Derek Forbort
Will Butcher
Adam Fox
Conor Garland
Jack Campbell

two guys who likely should be here:
Clayton Keller
Alex Galchenyuk

this team will likely be very young again, but names like Kreider, Lee, Kane, Atkinson, Gaudreau all have answered the bell last year and some more than that...I doubt any of them will be here again this year including Kane and Kreider who both are out of the playoffs as of today.

depending how it all finishes, I would say these names are very realistic:
the entire Rangers defense - Pionk, DeAngelo, Shatty, Skjei - all are likely bets to get invites
Palmieri is one of the best scorers we currently have as a reasonable add
Kinkaid/Schneider in net- neither are playing well but at least one of them might want to come to have a solid end to a rough season, but Campbell should likely be here and would be a decent add.

While it's too early for me to start getting excited for this tournament, it's not too early to temper some of the projected player selections. We're all guilty of our yearly unrealistic expectations for more American players to give a damn about this tournament, but at this point, for example, I certainly wouldn't be putting my eggs into the Carolina Hurricanes basket for players. Maybe Faulk, as he used to play regularly but hasn't the last 3 go arounds, but not Pesce and Slavin as they are also perpetually available and have declined to play every single time.

I'd think an early - extremely early - core like this, while not guaranteed, is a likely group to hope for as their respective teams are most likely not to make the playoffs:

Forwards

  • Dylan Larkin
  • Brady Tkachuk
  • Blake Coleman
  • Miles Wood
  • Jack Hughes
Defense
  • Danny Dekeyser
  • Alec Martinez
  • Quinn Hughes
Goalies
  • Jack Campbell
There's also some quality RFAs that I would choose and I think are more likely to play than the average RFA. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these guys either sign extensions before the WC gets here or play regardless:
  • Colin White
  • Frank Vatrano
  • Alex Iafallo
  • Will Butcher
That would be a good start and if a couple big dominoes fell, we could be looking at a pretty talented team.

How this team lost in the QF was mind blowing. Easily the best team we sent to this tournament since 1991 at that time. We had 3 strong goalies, a young but extremely talented and physical defense group...and that offense?? lol, that group is hard to rival from any year we ever sent to play for the red, white and blue.

This was finally the start where we could finally attract top talent to play here, as we were developing much more as well. The year prior was a deep group as well, but this team had every name on it having a lengthy NHL career. It was also the start and possibly end of Jason Pominville being American lol...what a surprise that was for some of us. One of my favorite USA teams ever, that shit the bed when it counted most - heard that too many times over the years.

Nothing overly special with this group, but it will always have a soft spot in my heart for a number of reasons...if you look closely a few names should stand out: Doug Weight and Mike Modano. The two vets made their swan song for team USA at the WC, as this was the second to last time both ever played for our country, 06 Olympics was the final. For two vets like this to come and play here was something I will never forget and something I wish our current vets did as well.

Tim Thomas and DiPietro were the future of USA Hockey in net and for a stretch Hal Gill was our current Connor Murphy with answering the call. And oh yeah, that Zach Parise kid made his appearance as well!

Another QF loss, but a solid roster none the less with two of the best we ever had suit up!

This was another fav of mine because it was an Auston Matthews showcase! Also had a number of young guys making their debut here, and of course Kyle "not good enough for the WJC" Connor lol...kid didn't make team USA for the WJC despite destroying the NCAA, but did get to come here with his linemates in Motte and Compher..thanks JJ!!

Brock Nelson and Connor Murphy continued their loyalty by answering the call yet again, and Dylan Larkin officially becomes the next Captain America starting here! Foligno was a nice surprise add as well. Team lost in the bronze medal game.

will we see a team more skilled than this again?? Kane, Gaudreau, Lee, Larkin, Atkinson, DeBrincat and Kreider is honestly the best group of forwards we have ever sent here. the main issue was we needed Nick Bonino to come in after the playoffs and step in and play a #2C. We had insane depth at the wings, even a guy like Coleman is tearing it up this year. Just loaded overall on the wings, but so shallow at center, that eventually did us in as a thin defense and so-so goalie depth hurt in the end. But this team was fun as hell to watch and always loved their fight. Seeing Kane out there as the Captain is something I will never forget. McAvoy and surprise Alec Martinez thank the lord came from their playoff eliminations giving us our top 2 dmen at the very last minute.

I have hopes that this years team can be like this again with the amount of talent and depth that we have, but to see a team with that many skilled forwards together for is something I am not sure we will see again.

won the bronze!

looking over these old rosters I just realized something I never knew.

Eric Weinrich - D played in 10 World Championships for the US....10!

A quiet leader, reliable and hard worker, I had no idea he played on that many teams - talk about answering the call - wow! Some guys just view this more of an honor than others.
