That was unexpected.

Weren't there rumours that he was going to sign an entry-level deal somewhere.

BTW - signing all these free agents is a very interesting approach by the Marlies. They must be expecting to lose a lot of players in the offseason.

I don't think they can. Wouldn't they have to be on an NHL team roster at the trade deadline?

yes, IIRC, that's close to fully accurate
OR the team's protected list, like a draft pick or a 'defected' player (typically a RFA who had been presented a QO, tho there may be other scenarios ...)

in '12 Kreider (a draft pick) joined NYR for the playoffs, signing contract only following the Frozen Four, played 18 playoff games before having played any regular season games

in '13 Zuccarello re-joined NYR for March, and playoffs, after a full KHL season. He had been QO'd RFA the prior summer, so was on NYR's extended roster or protected list and eligible

Oh right - I forgot about those examples.

What's interesting is that NHL.com has him listed as a NSH player

Brandon Fortuanto Stats and News

His ID, 8481497, follows immediately after Lukas Craggs' 8481496 and Bobby Nardella's 8481495 who both just officially signed today. NHL.com does create profile pages for prospects signed to AHL contracts or brought in on tryouts, etc., - for example, Shawn McBride, 8481494, comes right before Nardella in the registry, and he just signed an ATO with Hartford - but they are not assigned to a team. As of this moment, no one comes after Fortunato in the registry.

If Nashville announces a signing today, I expect full compensation from both TSN and Sportsnet as a news breaker/insider

EDIT: Interestingly, NHL.com has also misspelled his name as FortuANto, instead of FortuNAto... the plot thickens!!!
