With @StevenToddIves right now. He says:

There's alot of guys that have a lot of tools, but haven't put it together yet. He could be one of them, potentially projecting to a 2nd pairing guy. But at the 55 or 61 spot, there will prob be better guys available

Oh. I missed the first sentence where you said you were with STI right now. I thought you got like... smart or something. :naughty:

You're THAT anxious to start up all the NEW arguments that come with who we drafted, eh?

Okay, this could be fun for my fellow Devils draft-lovers: assuming the Devils hang onto their picks at #34, #55, #60 & #70, who are the four players you would like the most to add to Jack Hughes?

The only rule is this: no absurd wishful thinking, which is to say that however much you like Moritz Seider or Peyton Krebs, there is little chance they fall to #34. This will be more enjoyable if we stay realistic.

That would be one heck of a haul. I would say that it's quite likely that Afanasayev is around at #34, and possible to find Rees at #55, and Grewe at #60. I cannot see Vlasic falling so far. But this is about wishful thinking, and this haul would clearly put the Devils' prospect pool in the top 5 of the NHL.

I said #34 for Beecher

#55 for McCarthy

#60 and #70 I take BPA

#96 Keppen

#127 BPA 'cause Korczak I don't think will be available by then.

#158 & #189 The Next Jesper Bratt

34- Thomson
55- Korczak (McCarthy if he is gone)
60- Donovan
70- Aaltonen

The combination of Thomson and Korczak/McCarthy would certainly stabilize the Devils organizational depth at RD. I don't see any chance of Korczak being around at #55, unfortunately. Thomson is a very exciting prospect -- he can skate like the wind and shoot the lights out. His defensive game really started to come around this year, and he's not afraid to throw some big hits. I'm a huge fan of him at #34 if he's still on the board.

There seems to be a lot of love for Ryder Donovan on the Devils draft boards. I certainly agree that his combination of 6'4 size/skating/NHL-caliber shot makes him a high-upside target who should be around at the #60 or even #70 pick.

Leevi Aaltonen certainly has the high-end speed Shero and Castron clearly covet. He's one of the 10 best skaters in the 2019 draft class. The question is: can he round out the rest of his game to a professional level, and can he overcome his diminutive size?

The thought of adding Thomson/Korczak to our prospect pool has me salivating like Pavlov’s dog. They have different, yet equally enticing skill sets, which works out great. The Devils need a Korczak or McCarthy type of defender as our blue line doesn’t have much (or any) sandpaper at all. We are way too easy to play against. Just watching the finals- you can see the profound difference a big boy like Chara, Parayko or Carlo makes. Of course I am not suggesting either of these youngsters will develop into those studs; the point is we need more muscle and some of these types of players to impose a little fear into the opposition in going into the dirty areas to score goals. I do agree it’s unlikely Korczak is available at 55 but I don’t think it’s impossible. On the other hand, from the research I’ve done it seems there is next to no chance Thomson falls that far.

Donovan and Aaltonen are two very different players from a physical standpoint and I like the idea of adding a diverse group of prospects. Donovan is a big man which we currently lack upfront (it’s a bonus that he plays RW). I suppose Bastian is the closest comp we have in-house in terms of size but he is certainly nowhere close to the skater that Donovan is. Despite being somewhat raw, I like the upside of this player as he has a rare combination of size and speed.

Like you said, Aaltonen has the kind of speed that Shero/Castron tend to covet. He does need to polish some part of his overall game but at pick 70, why not? Well- my first preference would be to package the 60 and 70 selections for a Jason Zucker so that answers the question.

@StevenToddIves , I found this draft guide made by someone else.

What do you think?

https://ridingpinehockey.files.wordpress.com/2019/06/rp_2019guide.pdf

That's some terrific work there, much kudos to Brandon Holmes and the Riding Pine team.

It's a good alternative to my list, especially in terms of how differently we value physicality and compete level, especially in defensemen. We can call this "The Korczak/Honka Effect". Look at any rankings, and their ordering of those two players will tell you everything you need to know about their ideas on physicality/compete level vs. perceived offensive upside with defensemen. I have Korczak as a first rounder and Honka as about a fifth rounder. Brandon has Honka as a second-rounder and Korczak as a third-rounder. Korczak's upside is maybe a 35-40 point D with elite shut-down skills and physicality. Honka's upside is a 55-60 point puck-mover, but it's important to note that he's as physically soft and defensively flawed as any player in the entire 2019 draft. Essentially, his only value in the defensive zone is if he gets the puck with any space, at which point he can skate it out in a blink, or laser a high-end breakout pass.

I would like to add that I'm a little upset at this list, because I can no longer boast that I have Philip Tomasino ranked higher than anyone else. Love that kid.

Thanks again for the link, @glenwo2 !

Zegras comp is Elias, interesting......

If only.....(oh well...can't have Hughes AND Elias 2.0)

Only in my fantasies (caused by pure delirium) do I see Zegras falling all the way to #34.

I bet he gets drafted at either #5 or #6.

Ironically, that's where we might have ended up had we not won Hughes.
