I'm beyond sold on this. My first clue was the impact Pat Maroon made for the Devils down the stretch in 2018. Your position on this has been totally validated by the playoffs this year, and another thing that I haven't seen you mention (but I'm sure you already know): look at the score sheet from tonight's game. ONE minor penalty. The league rewards skill and speed in the regular season. It rewards size and physical play in the playoffs.
Big players that can move, have some skill and aren't stupid will always fare well. When you inject them into a line with speed and skill you get young Nathan Hortans and Tom Wilson's (minus the part were he is a shit person) that's why I refuse to give up on Zacha.

For anyone who would like to debate my far-higher-than-normal rankings of physical players like Korczak, McCarthy, Keppen and Beecher... I'd like to present the 2019 Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues.

If he's available at #34, I want Beecher.

Of course if Spencer Knight is still there...............

(but who are we trying to fool here? He'll be selected looong before 34)

I don't see Spencer Knight falling to #34, but if he did I imagine he would be a strong consideration for the Devils.

Let's assume Knight is off the board. Do you think the Devils will, like they have in each of the last 4 drafts, draft another goalie?

So Kakko it is.:sarcasm:

Passing on Hughes would be the greatest mistake in the history of the Devils organization, and the current braintrust is far too competent for such a blunder.

The point is not to go "full Chiarelli" and value physicality over skill with impunity. The point is that physical defensemen and forwards could be had later in the draft, and the Devils need to target and develop players who can handle a heavier brand of hockey. Players like Beecher and Korczak could be available at #34, and with the later second-round picks players like McCarthy, Tuomisto and Grewe could be on the board. From the third round on, the Devils can grab forwards like Hamaliuk, Keppen and Janicke and defensemen like Jake Lee, Moberg and Bolduc.

Will Francis is a top 5 player in terms of physicality in the draft, plays a position of need at RD and could be available in the 6th/7th rounds.

I'm certainly missing a few of these guys, but you get the idea.

The Devils should also focus on getting a more physical element on D this off-season, and maybe a Pat Maroon-type for the bottom 6 Fs.

Oh, geez. I have a bunch of girls in their 20s who work with me at my bar. Every time someone texts me an emoji, I need to give them my phone and have them translate.
It's funny too in that, I used to not use the emoji's cause I thought they were corny as heck, I went awhile refusing to use them, but people would get all upset at some pretty basic ball busting, so I use them pretty regularly now, and it definitely eases tensions.

Then I run into some old timey bartender who doesn't know what "emoji" means, and they start sighing and stomping about all angry.........;)

Maroon is interesting in that while, yes he was physical, yes we would drop the gloves, and he would go in front of the net, but I thought his passing was what really made him effective here.

Devils have drafted some bigger guys in Shero's time here, Bastian having emerged as maybe his best example, but Bernard, Zetterlund, Pop's, Sharangovich, Maltsev, Rykov, even McLeod.

We often hear how Shero focuses on skill and speed, but he hasn't ignored the size element.

I think that smiley face looks like it's winking at me. Let me give this to a waitress to translate...

I'm not looking at size, but rather physicality. I'd rather draft Grewe, who is 6'0-180 but hits anything in sight, than a 6'3-210 forward who plays a perimeter game.

That sounds like Pop's.

But not Bastian, or Zetterlund, or even McLeod.

In regards to hitting everything in sight? I'll point to Larry Robinsons advice to Parayko(I think) on that.

I will say, I think there is room for growth into possible top 6 roles for a ton of our prospects but even if that doesn't happen our bottom six will be loaded with tenacious two way forwards. Every championship team is built different but that is a common theme in every winner.

I'm imagining:

Talvitie - Zacha - Anderson
Zetterlund - Coleman - Bastian

Or something to that effect :)

@StevenToddIves (and perhaps @thethinglonger), any chance you could share your thoughts on Daniil Misyul? I notice he's not on your 3-round(ish) lists, but he does crop up on a couple (Corey Pronman and Cam Robinson both have him at around 60, Hockeyprospect.com seem quite high on him at 42). Any chance he adds enough offence to his game to become any more than a big, fast 3rd pairing shutdown type d-man? Would he be a huge reach if the Devils were to pick him at #55 or #61?

With @StevenToddIves right now. He says:

There's alot of guys that have a lot of tools, but haven't put it together yet. He could be one of them, potentially projecting to a 2nd pairing guy. But at the 55 or 61 spot, there will prob be better guys available
