Is this guy finally the one? Is he the one who can be the next Crosby for us(assuming we don't go crazy and trade the #1 pick tonight)? Or even a Kane or Stamkos?

There seems no reason to watch picks #2-20...but the latter half of the first round gotta pay attention in case we trade back in.

Honestly, this is such a deep draft with so many guys I’ve followed or looked up thanks to this board that I’m really interested in where all this talent ends up. There is always at least one player that shouldn’t fall into the teens so who will it be this year?

I wonder if anything like this has ever happened since (a bit from the Athletic on Bobby Clarke blackmailing Brian Burke, really - supposedly the YT clip stating this story is on part of the Leafs' draft documentary in 2009)
  • OK, here comes the crazy Hartford story. Burke mentions that you can trade down while making the other team promise that they won’t take a player you want. He explains that in 1993, when he traded up from No. 6 to No. 2 to get the Chris Pronger pick from San Jose, the Sharks made him throw in a conditional first-round pick if their guy wasn’t still there. That player was Viktor Kozlov, or as Burke hilariously calls him here, “the big Kozlov, not the little one.” So far so good.
  • But here’s the amazing part: Bobby Clarke and the Panthers find out about the side deal, and Clarke threatens to take Kozlov one pick ahead of San Jose unless Burke gives him a second-round pick. Burke had to either give up a second-round pick for nothing, or call Clarke’s bluff while risking a first rounder. In the end, he paid up and surrendered the second.
  • Bobby Clarke basically blackmailed Brian Burke. Successfully! How high does that rank among conversations you wish there was tape of? If Burke wanted to fight Kevin Lowe in a barn for signing a standard offer sheet on a middle-six forward, how do you think he reacted to what Clarke pulled? NHL GMs used to be so much fun back when we expected them to actually do their jobs.

Tough building
Finns are like that. It was overwhelming. He’ll adjust.

Deep down Kaapo is a sentimental, caring type. He even gave our boy Jack a hug at the World Championships. :sarcasm:
