I haven't liked Ceci, Muzzin or Rielly's game. In fact they've been scary bad(especially Ceci and Muzzin). If they don't wake up soon it's going to be a very long season. Last night it was ok partly because Wings are pretty bad. But we'll see..I don't like their decision making and if people thought Zaitsev or Hainsey were bad, i think we might see even worse from this group(oh and Muzzin has this thing where he looks both great and awful on the same shift..never seen anything like it..and he's consistently like that where it's good play and then a horrible play where he can't even clear the puck properly or just gives it right through the middle..unreal).

tavares and matthews lines play against top 2 nhl lines a lot, that means they on the ice with a lot of talented opponents...hyman and mikheyev play a stronger defensive game than kapanen and johnsson, and they also have more size and play with more grit and hustle, and they aint bad offensively at all...either would look great with tavares/marner and matthews/nylander

I want to see:
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Mikheyev-Matthews-Nylander
Johnsson-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Timashov-Gauthier-Moore

But I don’t know how you bench Spezza or break up Matthews or kerfoots line

I like that lineup. But if you want to leave the third and the first line untouched. Make it this way.

Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Moore
Timashov - Gauthier - Kapanen
Spezza/Shore. Rotating them in for gauthier and timashov.

Yes I know kapanen is an expensive piece to have on the fourth line. we can move him for a solid mean bottom pair or a pick.

Then the lines can look like this.

Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Moore
Timashov - Gauthier - Spezza
Shore (rotating in and out for spezza)

Broken down line by line...

Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander

This line has been at times, downright dominant. They're in the opposing zone most of the time and they pass the puck well. They have yet to even hit another stride which is scary to think about since two of the three are PPG or higher. No reason to break them up.

Miky - Tavares - Marner

Kapanen's biggest problem is that he skates faster than he thinks and it doesn't allow for Tavares and Marner to set up and cycle or open up ice. He also shifts sides too much which forces Marner on his off wing. Miky works just as hard, is incredibly fast for his size and better at winning the puck while also having a good shot. I think he would let this line explode at 5v5 and break the other two out of their slumps.

Kapanen - Kerfoot - Moore

Speed. To. Burn. Have these guys go out there and burn their weaker pairings with speed, tiring them out on the forecheck to allow the top 6 to come in and wreck havoc.

Timashov - Gauthier - Shore

I liked what I saw from Shore playing last night. If he can continue that way, this line would do wonders in its usage.

I can't see this happening but I'd line the team up like this when everybody is fit

Hyman Tavares Marner
Mikheyev Matthews Nylander
Johnsson Kerfoot Kapanen
Timashov Gauthier Moore

Rielly Dermott
Muzzin Barrie
Sandin Ceci

Ceci and Rielly need to broken up, neither guy can defend against the transition game in the NZ and there getting eaten alive against the better teams, they just don't work well together

I was going to post this exactly, although switching Barrie and Muzzin so they play their strong side

I’d rather play Sandin 25 mins on the Marlies then be the #6 on the leafs. Then call him up to the leafs after the deadline.

Agreed (at least to the first part), the Leafs' playing their best prospect 12 minutes a game on the third pairing to make the team slightly better makes as much sense as if the Leafs had kept Marner on the roster in 2015/16 to play 4th line RW.

Matthews - Nylander - Marner
Mikheyev - Tavares - Moore
Johnsson - Kerfoot - Kapanen
Timashov - Gauthier - Spezza

Matthews and Nylander alternate based on matchups and situationals.
4th line is the usual interchangable parts.

When Hyman is back it sets up this beauty

Mikheyev - Tavares - Matthews
Hyman - Nylander - Marner
Moore - Kerfoot - Kapanen
Johnsson - Gauthier - Spezza

Honestly I think it's pretty amazing how little Tavares and Matthews have played together 5v5. We have the talent to ice good lines beyond that. Try it for like 3 games. Why not?

I was thinking next year. Is this reasonable or even close to being realistic ?
