Is there any particular reason for Bokk’s total lack of production this year? Seems from the stats alone he’s taken a step back.

Similar to Puistola in Tappara (1 point in 15 games). I stopped keeping track of Rogle BK because Bokk plays 5-10 minutes a game with no PP time. Supposedly his advanced stats are good in limited minutes.

Stutzle-Bokk has an opportunity to do some damage at the WJC. Possibly reminiscent of Necas-Zadina.

A nice blurb on one of the least talked about of the Canes ‘19 draft class (from a Jonathan Willis Athletic article):
C Massimo "Decimus Meridius" Rizzo, Hurricanes

Rizzo was injured this summer and didn’t get the opportunity to attend Carolina’s prospect camp after being drafted. That doesn’t mean he isn’t in touch with them. Like most prospects, he got a list of items to work on from his new NHL team.
“Playing fast, playing heavy,” he said when asked what the Hurricanes had emphasized. “Work on my strength and speed; it’s a fast game. But they liked a lot of things. I’m just trying to get better every day.”
Rizzo’s offensive numbers don’t leap off the page at the BCHL level. He cracked the point-per-game mark last season and has improved his scoring pace very slightly this year, though goals form a larger percentage of his output and that has to be seen as a positive. He’s also not a one-dimensional player.
“Riz brings leadership,” said his coach at the tournament, Joe Martin. “He’s really good down the middle, faceoffs, he distributes the puck well… He’s good on the kill. He commands the puck. He makes good plays from inside the dots to outside. He brings guys towards him. He’d be a fun guy to play with.”
He’s an easy player to like at this level. He protected the puck well, gained the offensive zone with possession regularly, and showed an ability to disrupt opposition efforts by picking off passes or stealing pucks. He’s also a relatively young 18; as a June birthday, he’s barely older than many of the 2020-eligible players in the tournament.
Despite his formidable skills, projecting Rizzo to the next level is somewhat difficult. He isn’t big, listed at just 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, and he isn’t especially fast either. Sometimes smart and skilled can overcome that, and four years of college hockey is bound to help address it, too. As seventh-round flyers go, it’s easy to like Carolina’s bet here.

Shaya's 10 Thoughts: Dec. 19, 2019 - Charlotte Checkers Hockey - gocheckers.com

8. I can’t name many players that have made more progress than Steven Lorentz. One year ago he was in the ECHL and today he’s a key part of an AHL team. My guess is he will be in the mix for an NHL call-up this season. A scout said to me last night, “he keeps getting better.”

Also:

1. Both games this week were scouted heavily with as many as ten teams in the building for Wednesday night. More than one team had multiple personnel inside the Coliseum. One scout told me on Wednesday that Julien Gauthier is playing an NHL game tonight. Gauthier ended as the game’s first star.

Canes likely still shopping around for a top-6 forward.

Likely means "Willy, come back!", but if not, it'll be TVR for a buy-low, me thinks.

The comment from the article was that ~10 teams were scouting the Checkers/Wolfpack games this week and some had multiple personnel there. Not sure what that has to do with TVR.

In any case the Checkers picked a good time to impress scouts. NYR's goalie Shestyorkin is one of the best goalie prospects in the league. He traveled to Charlotte Tuesday with 28 goals against (~1.9 GAA) and a 0.937 sv%. After Charlotte shelled him with 8 goals in 2 games Shestyorkin is now down to a 0.926 sv% and a 2.14 GAA.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Borg always has oars in the water. Not that other teams don't as well, but the Borg seems to be more aggressive on that front to me. I could be way off, but they haven't been afraid to make moves, even ones that on the surface might be a bit of a head scratcher at the time.

I'm starting to wonder if Gauthier may have turned the corner. The last couple of yo-yos for him have seen increasing confidence and play in both leagues. I'd like to see him back up for another trial run soon before we explore trading him away.

Agreed. Again, though, it may just be teams interested in Gauthier and Carolina may not be willing to part with him barring a great return. I'm more interested to see if Carolina has brought their scouts to view NHL games.

I mean TVR in a package with Checkers guys, not just him.

I agree. Which in turn makes me wonder what the team *isn't* seeing. When you've just played three road games and improved your game in each, and the team is heading to Banff for a team-building weekend *in the middle of the road trip* and you get sent down in favor of Brian Gibbons, it really *has* to hurt. They really went out of their way to *not* have Gauthier with them for the second half of the trip, and that's really weird to me.

I think that all of us are overthinking that. It may just be their philosophy on prospects at work. They seem to love using Charlotte as their vehicle to give the guys that they're high on endless top-6 minutes to hone their craft.

Good news for Ryan Suzuki!

Hurricanes first-round prospect Ryan Suzuki is expected to play tonight for the OHL’s Barrie Colts after an extremely scary high stick had him out since early November.
Was having a strong start to the season.

Agreed. It borders on not sitting very well with me, regardless of the intended benefit.
I forget where I heard it, but one of the talking heads recently talked about a schedule that the big club has with some of the call ups. So while we see the ups and downs as a bit random, it may not be so disjointed to them as they’d know beforehand that they are only up for X number of games regardless of how they do.

Yeah, I thought it was just a "paper" exercise at the time, but then when it was announced that they called up Gibbons, I was perplexed by it. What we don't know is what they told him or what message they gave him. If it was something like:

"Goat, you're doing great, but we don't want to waste you on the 4th line and right now, we don't have a top 9 spot for you. So we think it's best for your continued development to head back to Charlotte and play top minutes that we need you to have. If you continue to progress like you have, we'll expect to see you back here again, but playing more meaningful minutes, if somebody gets injured and/or their game falls off. Keep up the good work."

I agree with Minjaben though, he seems to get better with every callup/send down.

Am I just blinded by the needless penalties he takes in every game with the Canes to see what you all are in his call ups?

Keep up the good work."

I certainly still don't think he's been anything great, but he has improved. And I'd easily take him over Gibbons and Bishop, who are terrible.
I’d take him over Gibbons, but Bishop has been perfectly fine on the fourth line and is better than Gauthier just from the fact that Rod trusts him enough to play more than 8 minutes a game.

Alternatively, maybe the Borg is doing the same thing for Bishop as they have with Gauthier. Considering he's still only 23, perhaps they think that he can improve his defensive game further in Charlotte than as a healthy scratch in Raleigh. It's worthy to note that our team has one of the most compact rosters in hockey this year (effectively a permanent 21-man roster), and the only activity that the press box has truly gotten is Fleury and TVR rotating every couple of games. Nearly everyone else is stashed in Charlotte.
