2nd star 2 the right
In fairness to hagg he is a very consistent player. Not good at all but consistent. Meaning everyone knows exactly what he will do. And do it poorly he will. But it’s the same every time.

Compare that to other players people were clamoring to be playing above him. While they had big ups and downs. The low parts were still above hagg. With the exception being Morin whose low part were equal to haggs consistent play. Pretty sure this is why hagg gets crapped on.

Imagine the pain that fan boys go through when one of the worst defenseman in the NHL had better stats that their crush .

Gahh I really hope Ghost pulls his head out of his ass next season. He's falling off quicker than Matt Read.

Off topic. But I thought this was interesting.

I took a deep-dive into Flyers players who played between ~10-100 games for the organisation but ended up not really having an NHL career for one reason or another.

26 guys fell into that bracket since 2007.

There were 6 who pretty much across the board had the indicators were actual NHL players:

1. Eric Wellwood (LW/RW): The shining star of the sample. Jeez. Just insane stats across the board. Indicators that he would have been a 3rd liner and a good one. AND that he never should have been in the AHL in 2012-13 as should have been regular in bottom six.

2. Patrik Thoresen (LW/RW): After Wellwood the 2nd best of the group. Great stats... only minor flaw was his rate of G/60. Bit below what would want from a 3rd liner. But everything else says was a fantastic 3rd liner.

3. Dany Syvret (LHD): I had kind of forgot about him... but good stats right across the board, more than held own when in the NHL. Indicators was really a good bottom pairing Dman who could have played as a #5.

4. Erik Gustafsson (LHD): Ofc everyone is aware of him... he was a #5 when in the NHL and given age and progression indicators say *might* have been able to be an okay #4.

5. Tye McGinn (RW/LW): Just solid. Nothing special but when in the NHL an above average 4th liner.

6. Evgeny Medvedev (LHD): Could have produced more... but very solid defensively. Good bottom pairing Dman.

Then there were three who were "above replacement level" but had big flaws:

7. Mika Pyorala (LW/C): Great defence, good playdriver... just below average offence for a 4th liner. But still should have had a longer NHL career as 4th liner.

8. Roman Lyubimov (LW/RW): Just "pretty decent" across the board. No big flaws, solid defence, but could have scored more to be a legit, good 4th liner.

9. Dennis Tolpeko (LW/RW): Really a good 3rd line level player offensively. But below par defence.

Then:

Leier and Bourdon... are the HMs. Both ~replacement level or so. But not "bad" in their NHL time. Capable fill-ins.

And not a single Patrick Sharp or Seidenberg in the group, that is, a player who went elsewhere and showed the organization made a mistake.

The only ones who did so was Maroon (extenuating circumstances) and Cousins to some extent, but he was more a matter of fit, he did get a legitimate shot in Philly.

I'll be happy if Hagg is resigned to a low cost deal, you don't throw away depth.
Zamula and York will be better players, but when? 2021-22?
Braun may be gone, Ghost will be gone after the ED, Morin is probably gone.
So your depth the next 2-3 years will be Hagg and Friedman until some kids step up and take jobs.
And you write prospects in pencil, what if Zamula's back acts up again?

Now a 3 year, $2+M deal, that's another story. You don't overpay #6/#7 guys.

Danny Syvret was a great fit for the AHL. He was not a viable NHL player.

Just to quickly recap who Dough boy is defending...

League-wide of defensemen with over 500 min at 5v5...
183 of 197 in CF%
170 of 198 in xGF%
189 of 197 in CF/60
143 of 197 in CA/60
181 of 197 in xGF/60
113 of 197 in xGA/60
197 of 197 in CF%rel
193 of 197 in CF/60rel
197 of 197 in xGF%rel
191 of 197 in xGF/60rel
1 of 197 in PDO (aka luck)

(I know Dougherty and the other pro-Hagg guys wouldn't understand that these scary stats are simply results and not magical witchcraft, but that's part of why they're so lost)

And his stats are far worse when not being carried by Ghost (and Ghosts are much better away from Hagg)... so imagine where he'd be without his babysitter.

But he had great underlying stats over his time in the NHL... across the board. Offensively and defensively.
Maybe so, but it was 59 games on three different teams over multiple seasons, which is a pretty small sample in each stint. He never could stick anywhere long enough to show if he could be consistent long term.

He stats may show he "held his own" during his short NHL career, but he was not an NHL player. It wasn't just hockey guy reasoning that kept him from succeeding in NHL.

There are plenty of players who had good fancy stats but didn’t belong in the NHL. Syvret. Zherdev. Colaiacovo. Immediately jump to mind.

There's way too much talk about a dman who averages AT LEAST 1:30 less per game than six other dmen on the team.

Yeah.

Those 15:32 TOI/GP - more than 1/4 of the total game - are irrelevant.

764:14 total minutes this year.

Not worth talking about. Especially when he’s almost certainly getting re-signed to a brand new contract by our incompetent staff.
