I'm actually pretty happy we didn't land Trouba. He's an excellent player but we have too many defensemen as it is and I'd rather see us not trade young ELC talent for a guy who's going to make 7+ million per year. We need to be careful to not end up in cap hell again as the team enters its next contention window, since next year we have to pay Cat, Strome, and Gus and we're likely going to spend a good amount of cap space on a free agent forward or two this offseason.
This is why drafting Joker and company the last two years was so important for this franchise. He and our other young D will be cheap for years to come. That's how you build your team if you want to be contenders for an extended period of time - you need multiple good players on ELCs like we had back in 2010-2015.
