been a while since they drafted a kid out of high school - Lafferty ('14), Segalla ('13), Blueger ('12) - the last three.

it used to be a big part of their strategy. from 2004-2014, they only went 2 daft without picking at least one high-schooler.

fun fact: Noah Welch came out of this same high school.

Man, that Hamilton trade is ugly for Calgary.

Typical Canadian franchise move.

I think the value's fine, particularly if as reported there were questions about whether Fox would sign with Calgary.

I do wonder what they're going to do on RD though. Looks pretty weak now, unless I'm missing an LD who can play well on either side.

Considering the picks they traded for Hamilton and then only kept him for what, 3yrs?

Incredibly stupid. Typical stupid Canadian franchise move for sure.

If that was a cap saving move, they're gonna spend even more now, Lindholm wants around 5m+ a year, Hanifin is going to get around the same.

Lol

I know the late rounds are a Cap shot. But the last pick sure looks like a huge reach. Not impressive numbers even in a low league like that.

Rather go for boom or bust picks that late

We can't know if Fox will sign in Carolina and Hamilton is a very quirky player. I like the trade from the Flames perspective.

I think it's less about cap savings and more about moving a prospect who may not have signed there, a defenseman who didn't fit in with the team, and a forward who's going to be a UFA in a year. Ferland and Hamilton will probably cost about the same as Hanifin and Lindholm shortly.

I think the return for Carolina was kinda crappy, but I don't think it was a horrible trade for them. I feel like Hamilton is the best player right now and has the highest upside.
