Yeah, like they NEED the entry fee money. Lol. Pretty doggone sure they made more money than a greater part of the NHL last season. Tickets, Jersey sales (everyone had to start with and purchase their 1st jersey, right? Not like they had a closet full like @Machinehead and others here lol)
Parking, concessions......just an all around experience. All about every fan supporting them and spending money......in other ways than at the casinos.

Would be applicable if both of them were in the same situation as Kravtsov, but one of them was not. Reinhart fell into the “turns 20 between September 16 and December 31” bowl that Kravtsov is in while Bennett didn’t. Though Reinhart’s situation does lend credence to the idea that Kravtsov won’t need protection.

Not sure on that point regarding Reinhart - he turned 19 in the year he signed his ELC, and he turned 19 during the season I'm referring to. He only turned 20 the year after. Unless I'm missing something?

If he plays in AHL it better be 10 games or less. It'd be ridiculously stupid if he plays for the Rangers.

Sign the deal. Stay in Russia. See you in September/October.

I went ahead and revised that diagram in light of discussions with @Tawnos. Since some folks here apparently found it useful...

EDIT: Non-transparent background per that suggestion by @Rangers in 7.

I love the diagram. But the threshold is 11 games, not 10, because the NHL uses the waiver article (13.4) to determine a year counting towards expansion draft exemption, not ELC slide

Could there be an assignment to Hartford after signing ELC to play a few games there in addition to 10 NHL games?

Really? Its a thing......huh. wow, I would never even dream about buying another teams players jersey.
For example.....as great as Gretzky was, .......I would never don one in an Oilers jersey........with a Rangers crest, well that would be another story.

It is the "team" I am supporting, not necessarily the player. I had/have a Rangers jersey with no name. And was fine with that.
I would no sooner harness a Ortmeyer jersey, than I would a McDavid one. No kidding.

Well, for one thing, ELC signing age isn’t what we’re talking about here. The standards that determine accruing a pro season are seperate. Mostly it seems to be determined by a player’s age on December 31.

But I had assumed that Reinhart played his 9 games at the end of the 14-15 season. Instead, it was at the beginning. That makes this a completely different scenario that Kravtsov’s. If Reinhart’s 9 games were in 2015, that would be the same scenario. Since Reinhart doesn’t clarify it and Bennett went over 11 games anyway, we are still in the same ambiguous area. If expansion draft exemption is governed by waiver rules, Kravtsov would only play 1 game and require protection. If they’re governed by RFA/arbitration rules, he can play 9.

OMG! How do you and others KNOW all this technical crap?
I mean kudos to all.....but man, some here know way too much shit than any "normal" person.

But, do you know how to hang a new door? Change a deadbolt?
Lay tile? Paint interior and exterior? Electrical knowledge? Replace a gasket in your toilet bowl? Lay a laminate floor?
Guess my priorities aren't in order.
Jeez, and I thought that I lived and breathed hockey. You guys BLOW me away.

Under his ELC, he can only play 10 total pro games (NHL or AHL) without it affecting his expansion draft exemption. If he plays 11 games or more (again, AHL or NHL or combined) that exemption voids and he needs to be protected.

If he only plays in the AHL, it will most likely be a PTO

Back to thread of Kravtsov. So what is going to happen with him? Is there "any chance" he might get a little taste of the NHL? I mean, no rush......but all things being equal and we don't lose a year with his elc and whatever else......what would be the harm? Would LOVE to see him, even just for 5 games or so. That would be a treat.

I've always been more interested in the business side of sports. Even as a kid. I actually read the CBA in 2013, because I was in between jobs

The easiest way for me to explain this is this:

There are 3 categories which are important here.
  • ELC Slide: Because Kravtsov turns 20 in the year he would sign his contract, an entry level slide does not apply (CBA article 9.1.d.i) and they would burn a year if he's on the team for 1 game
  • Expansion draft exemption: For the expansion draft exemption, the NHL looks at waiver eligibility rules to determine what counts as a pro year (CBA article 13.4), which means it only counts towards that if he plays 11 games
  • Accrued seasons towards UFA status: Kravtsov not being slide eligible means the season counts as an accrued season. A player who hits 7 accrued seasons or is 27 years old on July 1st,whichever comes first, reaches their UFA eligible years (CBA article 10.1)

Scenario A: Kravtsov signs his entry level contract and plays 10 of fewer games (NHL or AHL) this season
ELC duration: 2019-2021
Expansion draft exempt: Yes
7 Accrued seasons in: 2026 at age 26

Scenario B: Kravtsov signs his entry level contract and plays 11 or more games (NHL or AHL) this season
ELC duration: 2019-2021
Expansion draft exempt: No
7 Accrued seasons in: 2026 at age 26

Scenario C: Kravtsov signs his entry level contract, but it only kicks in July 1st
ELC duration: 2019-2022
Expansion draft exempt: Yes
7 Accrued seasons in: 2027 at age 27

Provided that he can play either 9 or 10 games without affecting expansion draft status, I would expect a timeline something like this:

-Next week, signs ELC
-Spends one week/10 days practicing with Rangers and getting up to speed
-Debuts either 3/19 at home against Detroit or 3/23 on the road against Toronto (again depending on how many games he can play)

They could also play him right away and healthy scratch him here or there to make sure he doesn’t hit the threshold.

Thanks and sounds like a plan. This expansion draft is going to be quite interesting. Seems to me that we might not have quite the issue that we had with Vegas. Few ntc's that have to be protected (just Hank, right?)

Does anyone have a hypothetical list on who we will have to/want to protect? Who "may be left unprotected". Yeah, of course things can change......but what are we working with here so far? I just don't want us to lose a player that we really want to keep. Have a feeling we will be fine though.

No, Hank won't count because his contract will be expiring.

Every player that we currently have under contract is subject to the expansion draft, with the exception of Keane, whose contract doesn't start until the 2019-2020 season. Hank, Shatty, Staal and Smith will all be on expiring contracts, so we don't have to worry about them. The players who aren't under contract yet (Shesty, Kravtsov, Miller, Lundkvist, etc) will be exempt.

On defense, we would protect 3 of Hajek, Lindgren, Skjei, ADA, Pionk.

On offense, we would protect 7 of Zib, Kreider, Buch, Fast, Names, Strome, Vesey, Chytil, Andersson, Howden, Lemieux, Nieves, Gettinger

In goal, we would protect Georgiev.

Kreider, Fast, Names, Strome and Nieves may all be gone by then. Gettinger might still be in the AHL and not someone we'd worry about losing. The most likely forwards to still be here and be protected are Zib, Buch, Chytil, Andersson, Howden and Lemieux. That leaves us 1 spot, which may be filled by a player not yet in the organization.

I think one of ADA or Pionk will be gone by then, probably Pionk. Or maybe he's a guy we expose in the hopes they take him over someone else. Our protections would likely be Skjei, Hajek and ADA.

Apparently if he plays one game in the NHL we have to protect him in the expansion draft. Not worth it imo.

I tried to explain the situation and look at 3 different scenarios I posted here in the last hour. Hope this clears up some of the confusion

Vitali Kravtsov: a complex situation for the Rangers - FOREVER BLUESHIRTS

Have you gotten 100% confirmation that 13.4 is the article they use?

And have you gotten 100% confirmation that, in the event they use the article, Kravtsov is considered 19 and not 20?

Because I don't think you've cleared up any of the confusion without both of those things being the case.
