BTW has anyone who likes these signings thought about the ramifications of the upcoming Luongo salary cap penalty, likely in the last 2 years of these unnecessary contracts?
Has anyone even stated that they "like all three"- term and money included? I thought the ringing endorsement being repeated by Benning's loyal followers was - "it wasn't that bad" or "they had lots of cap space so it really doesn't matter"

Essentially he needs to retire next summer or it'll start to become a major issue. Another reason not to tie a bunch of money and term up in 4th line players right now.

Found this Benning gem in today’s athletic explaining his rationale for the July 1 binge. Apparently it’s so that we won’t have ANY injuries next season.

“The other thing we looked at too is that we’ve had a lot of injuries the last couple of seasons. If we can add some bigger bodied guys, then hopefully they can withstand the rigours of the season better, so we don’t have any injuries.”

Hahaha did he take a look at his prized physical specimen that he had to lock up for another 3 years (you know right before he needed season ending surgery)? The one whose main goal for this summer, is not to improve his horrid play, but to "get healthy so he can last 82 games next year".

As big of a body as there is on the Canucks and this useless player has played in only 50% of the games since they significantly overpaid for him. He's so big, tough, and durable (they all go hand in hand)- he injured himself on a holiday.

Whatever fits the narrative.

Guess he'll have to acquire a few big bodies on the blueline to so that the midget Guds doesn't have any injuries.

If managements smart they let Stecher go to arbitration, his numbers won’t be kind to his dollar amount

All his agent is probably doing is pointing at the Hutton contract

If I were his agent I would settle for the Hutton contract, but I'd be pointing to the Sbisa contract the example.

In 2021 (3 years from now) half our roster is already set. And they include

Loui Erikson
Jay Beagle
Sven Baertschi
Antoine Roussell
Brandon Sutter
Erik Gudbranson

All of them 3 years older.

Yayyyyy to never being good again!

And 3 of the 6 have some level of NTC :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Ironically enough, the one thing that could hamper this team that actually can be pinned on Gillis never gets brought up. Wonder why. Although, to be fair, I'd be shocked if Benning has put a single ounce of thought into it. Wouldn't be surprised if he isn't even aware of the penalties.

Hopefully having a platinum member of the OBC will pay dividends by negotiating a wink-wink "allergy" situation when the time comes, but it's probably more likely Lu plays out the full contract and then Benning gives him a 3 year deal for mentorship.

Come on, you all know Benning didn’t mean that having a few bigger guys on the roster will prevent all injuries on the team. Why show how weak you are at reasoning by habitually straw manning your opponents? People who know they’re correct and know how to reason don’t need to do that, in fact they do they opposite. The lack of steelmanning is disappointing and informative. It’s obvious once people have made up their mind they don’t have any desire to track a nuanced opinion unless it confirms what they already believe.

It also can't really be pinned on Gillis. It can be pinned on the league and really Brian Burke who were annoyed GMs used loopholes they didn't like. It was mean spirited retroactive punishment.

Well the contract itself was abusively spirited, no surprise it provoked a like response.

Nevertheless it is the reality. You would think the existing management would be aware of the situation and planning for it with their cap management.

The hockey media is just taking the temperature of the room and playing the tune their audience wants to hear. Negativity and outrage sells better than truth.

Nice spin. Never mind the fact that they are dead right and that these signings make the Canucks older and slower while clogging y roster space for 4 years.

Anyone with a GM position in the NHL should understand the basic rule is that you dont give out term and spend millions on your 4th line in the salary cap era.

Oh no doubt current management should be aware of it and planning for the worst. My comment was basically the only thing you can pin on Gillis at this point isn't something you can fully pin on the guy.

Older than what? Certainly not last season’s roster so you must mean older than some ridiculous fantasy where we fill every open slot with rookies and it works out.

Not giving out term and money to 4th liners isn’t a rule, it’s a trend that’s based on sound and logical reasons which simply don’t apply to all situations and this situation is one example of that.

You're saying it's good the Canucks gave out big money and long-term to two 4th liners, one of whom is in his mid-30's?

The defense of this regime has hit an even more ridiculous level than I thought it could, especially after the whole "waaah he's learning" BS.

It's also a pain that's going to be increasingly shared around the league as those contracts get moved around. Nashville is on the hook now, I think a team or two I may be forgetting, and Chicago too if they trade Hossa.

Remember that the hit on us for Luongo retiring in the last year looks so bad because the rule, either intentionally or through ignorance, is simply flawed. The point of the recapture is to take away any cap hit gains a team got if/when the player retires early, but the rule is broken if the player is tradd. The reason we'd get hit with a 1 year $8M cap hit if Luongo retires the last year while the actual difference between salary/cap is only $4M is because the balance of cap hit vs salary from Florida's end, where they will have paid $4M more in cap hit than salary, doesn't get shared.

While all the teams that signed these contracts are on the hook in one way or another, this is a loophole that specifically punishes teams who traded their player to an extra degree. Where as the rule is intended to provide balance vs cap hit this part of it does the exact opposite, just going the other way. So like I said with more teams than just the Canucks on board there's no reason why the league can't retroactively close the loophole.

Or alternatively if the rule doesn't change, if we re-acquired Luongo for the 20-21 season and he retired after I believe would have no effect on Florida and cut our cap recapture penalty for the 21-22 season in half.
