We'll be fine barring a catastrophic disaster or an array of injuries.

I'm aware but that's the possibility that I'm worried about lol we have had so much good luck over the past few years

So this will be iteration #10112432 for off-season planning on Capfriendly out of boredom.

I decided to get stupid (emphasis here that this was purely boredom and unlikely to ever come true)

Trade #1: Gardiner to Dallas for a DAL 1st 2019 and DAL 3rd 2020

Trade #2: Horton, TOR 1st 2019, TOR 2nd 2020, Carrick to Montreal for Petry Deslauriers

Trade #3: (this one gets real crazy) Nylander, Zaitsev, DAL 1st 2019, TOR 2nd 2019, Andreas Borgman for Pietrangelo and a 2019 3rd

Marleau-Matthews-Kapanen
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Kadri-Brown
Leivo-Lindholm-Ennis
Deslaurier-Jooris

Rielly-Pietrangelo
Dermott-Petry
Rosen-Hainsey
Holl

Andersen
Sparks

13.94M cap space

Picks 2019: 2 3rds, 2 4th, 5th, 7th
Picks 2020: 1st, 2 3rds, 4, 5, 6, 3 7ths

Definitely could use a player like Nylander to play top line with Matthews :P

Looking at Ian's tweet, thought it was a good way in 140 characters or less to say who is left and could be useful.

I'd love to see the Leafs sign:
LW: Nash - still a good two eay player, can still shoot well, could be another JVR type.
LW: Hartnell - can still be a great 4th liner and play 3W if an I jury happens. Can still be a solid PK guy
C: Vermette - faveoff and PK expert
RW: Hansen - Tons of speed and great 200 ft player for his cost
LD: Hamhuis - 20 minute a night guy who got burned down over a long season. 3rd pair minutes would be ideal, could be good on special teams with Hainsey

If the Leafs move Gardiner + a forward for a RHD, getting Hamhuis + one of Nash/Hartnel or Hansen (depending on what wing is traded away)

I'm a big proponent of Vermette because of his PK ability and amazing face off specialist.

Something like:

Marleau Matthews Nylander
Hyman Tavares Marner
Nash/Johnsson Kadri Kappanen
Johnsson/Hartnell Vermette Hansen

Reilly - Trade
Dermott - Zaitsev
Hamhuis - Hainsey/Holl/Carrick

In this scenario I have Gardiner and Brown moved in the trade.

** Only one of Hartnel or Nash, not both.

Leafs don't need to sign any forwards.

How is Hamhuis' game these days? Wasn't that long ago that he was on Team Canada...

I’ve liked the idea of Hamhuis for a year to play beside Zaitsev, if Gards can be flipped for someone who can play beside Mo.

Right now, there’s enough bodies around, so these depth types are more like dominoes that might fall after other ones do.

Always liked Jurco though, maybe on s tryout.

The top 9 is good to go. When the depth is as strong as it is now, why take away quality ice time from Johnsson? It's a blessing to develop young prospects in such a sheltered position.

Adding Nash/Hartnell and demoting Johnsson is silly.

I form disagree on the face of your argument.
To me if we got Hartnel it would be to do 4th line duties.
Marleau Matthews Nylander
Hyman Tavares Marner
Johnsson Kadri Brown/ Kapannen
Hartnell Vermette Brown/ Kapannen would be fun as heck.

Hamhuis and Nash, if he wants to stick around, are the only ones worth the Leafs' time at this point. Leivo is better than all of those other wingers, we have defensemen on the Marlies next year who are better fits than those other defensemen, we need to be trading away goalies rather than bringing in new ones, and none of those centers are really worth trying out more than Lindholm.

It might have been appealing if Hartnell could play as a PKer but he didn't kill penalties in Columbus or Nashville.

The points will dry up since Hartnell will never get the 11 minutes per game he received in Nashville. You might as well keep Ennis in that spot because it won't matter anyway.

No. Sparks needs to be tested.

That and Mason is a terrible goalie.
I'll give Mason one thing though.....he's a master of the medicine ball! Literally every time I went to Oakville's Canlan arena last year, he was at the front of the building doing some sort of exercise with a medicine ball. LOL

I dont like it. Offensive D are at premium in current NHL. Gardiner with all his wards shown at times that he could be that #1D (when Reilly was injured). And this trade surely selling him at all times low. Then again, lets imagine Reilly gets injured again. Who do we have without Gards to carry offensive load? Our D would be well below average and that would cost us games.
So Gards is more valuable in first place and more valuable for us specifically. Why would we retain and give Lievo for free? Just because Oilers have big fat hole on wings? We just lost three wingers. I think it's Lievo opportunity. He has jump and offensive instincts. Those are premium qualities in NHL. We can afford one offensive first winger on the team now that three others useless defensively are gone. And defensive side could be learned, but you cannot teach skill. Selling low on Lievo here too I think.
On Oilers side they will potentially get premium package for nothing much in return, but Gards will not resign there and all UFAs are bolting from Ice desert.
Gardiner has never been a number 1D or shown to be one. He doesn’t have the defence or the physicality to be one.

I would think Winnipeg would want more for Trouba.

Definitely worth considering one of those centres on a one year deal. Giving Lindholm a little competition certainly wouldn't be a bad thing, and that way we're not putting all our eggs in one basket

Vermette would be interesting but Jooris and Gauthier are in the same spot.
