Pretty good pick at 40, but he's an OHLer I wasn't a big fan of.

He's one of those guys that skate around really fast, but don't really accomplish much.

I've read his hockey sense is high. Lets be happy we're drafting skill and speed, not coke machines like MacT and them would

I don't get how his biggest idol is Smytty but he has compete issues lol. Get the two Ryan's on the ice together and this Ryan could work out well for us as well. Hopefully playing for his favourite team and under the eye of his favourite player will be good motivating factors with him.

Learning how to effectively hustle and compete in tight areas is a skill itself, sounds like with everything else he has if he figures that out, he will have a great career

Most 18 year olds I've met have some sort of work/attitude issues. We tend to forget that a lot of these guys won't be old enough to go to a Las Vegas casino for another 3 years.

Is his head coach supposed to be a good one? When I hear something like this I think of coaching and/or a lack of hockey IQ.

There are a lot of things a player can improve but compete level is tough. That is usually there or it isnt.
Many players with a very high compete level and less skill make the NHL...very few players with skill and a low compete level do.

He probably ends up as a LW. It's a long way out but

RNH-McDavid-Puljujarvi
McLeod-Draisaitl-Yamamoto

Nurse-Bouchard
Klefbom-Larsson

That's a solid potential core.

I don't want to get my hopes up. Hoping he becomes a 3C for us and won't be bummed out if he doesn't cut it in the top 6.

Brandon Saad was known for a poor compete level so it is possible for players to figure it out

I didnt know that about Saad.
I just dont want McLeod to be another Paajarvi. Good size and great wheels with little to no desire to go into traffic.

After reading up on him and watching the video he seems to be the prototypical high-floor, low-ceiling, lanky smooth-skating 2C type that Oilers have tried to draft since forever - Riley Nash, Pitlick, Benson, Marco Roy, Moroz (ok, this was a throw away pick - he didn't have 2C skill).

Ryan McLeod: 2018 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

He truly looks like Nuge in the videos. We don't seem to swing for the fences and draft problematic skilled wingers in the 2nd.

I've heard some polarizing reports about this, hopefully someone with experience with the OHL can give some insight?

Seems to me that he doesn't particularly possess dynamic skills but is fast and talented, if he can up his compete level hopefully he can be a Middle 6 forward for us, which is fine, we aren't exactly star hunting at the center position.

The pick is very good value at #40. He was supposed to be a 1st round pick. Even Corey "I only care if the players become stars" Pronman liked the pick.

Unfortunately, he'll probably never be a top-six guy, which is what we need. I personally really dislike picks like this. Some team would normally save us from him, we were unlucky.

If Chicago can pick Boqvist, Beaudin, Wise and Nordgren, there's no reason to take the "safe 2C that never ever becomes a 2C".

The Oilers might never get a impact player in the 2nd round if they keep drafting like this. You can't live on your 1st round picks, especially if they're developed like Puljujarvi. And if Chiarelli keeps throwing away picks and preventing 5th round steals like Maksimov, well...

This guy has a heck of a shot for a playmaker. He's like a better skating Galchenyuk

Chia Syndrome 2: Has a choice between McLeod and Akil Thomas, but takes the player with way more question marks. Decent prospect but like Benson vs. DeBrincat one will be clearly shown to be better very soon.

Last I checked it’s too early to call Maksimov a steal, he has yet to do anything in the NHL

I've seen a few people have considered McLeod one of the more NHL ready players in this draft class which I find interesting. If he can play starting in 2019 that would be huge.

I think it will all depend on how he develops between the ears.

He has the physical tools, but he'll need to get more consistent, make more of an effort to get into physical battles and also more of an effort to win them to see NHL success, IMO.

In the final rankings they had McLeod at 22 and Thomas at 28

We could of literally picked Dahlin at 10 and you would of gone "Chia Syndrome 3: Rhe player clearly fell for a reason and Chia was too dumb to take the safe pick then the faller"

Back to McLeod, I mean he sounds like maybe a faster version of Ryan Strome.

Thomas is extremely average at everything and likely will not produce at the next level. You see these guys every year, it's getting easier to pin point them. Noel was in the same boat. McLeod is bigger with much more skill then Thomas, I think he should've gone 1st round.

If either makes the NHL I feel confident McLeod would be the one.
