Thanks everyone for the explanations. I still don’t understand why they didn’t just move Myers and Armia instead though. Yes the Trouba situation is still in the air but moving Armia would have netted us picks instead of losing them, and same with Myers. We’d be a bit thinner on D but at least would have a better backup goalie, and a far brighter future. I kinda “get” the trade but don’t “understand” it. I honestly think it was made to make space for Stastny (with a plan to move Myers as well, which now won’t happen). I just don’t buy arguments that the cap shed trade is better than trading Myers and Armia and am a bit puzzled by it.

I don't really like the trade either. I would have preferred keeping Mason as an expensive backup for 1 year and letting him expire. Meantime, move Myers for something of value to clear space for this year. Perreault would be next to go, not Armia. Simply because of age if for no other reason.

I don't see that trade as tied directly to Stastny though. It was part of the package of moves that would have been needed if Stas had signed here but it was needed anyway.

Man I hope Leafs fans make a thread or two on signing Tavares. You'd think they would be all over that.

I don’t buy that at all. Fluke doesn’t get you 5th in the NHL and to the Stanley cup finals. This team will be good for quite some time, especially considering their great depth and prospect pool coming up. One thing about them is they have players who play well together in a system that compliments that. Look at Ladd-Little-Wheeler = Little plays lights out, all 3 play well together. Look at Ehlers-Little-Laine = Little looks lost and things like offence become a conundrum for him. Stastny was a player injected into that line and everything seemed to click (especially when compared to Little). This is what Vegas has achieved and is a big part of why they demolished us 4 straight.

If we are serious about competing for a cup, we will most likely have to go through Vegas (whether they become seeded in our division, us in there’s or we meet in the WCF again). We will have to become able to beat them. Something must be done to last years second line (Little/27/29) whether that’s just the players becoming much much better, or a lineup/shakeup that compliments itself much better.

Apparently it does. There just isn't room to deny the flukiness of so many players having career years at the same time.

Their prospect pool isn't that good. They had 1 great draft and have some very good prospects as a result. It is not a deep pool though. They added nothing to it this year. They would have had way more picks if things had gone as expected. They would have moved Neal, Perron and maybe others at the TD for picks.

Those few good prospects, plus FA signings that they can afford with their cap room, plus the core from the XD will probably enable them to be pretty good for a while.

All we needed to beat them was for the goaltending to normalize. Maybe as little as 1 day off between series might have made a difference. Things came together for them and not for us. The winner of the SC is not the best team. It is the one team out the top 4-6 contending teams that has things come together and hold together at the right time. If you think they demonstrated superiority over us you might as well give up now.

What's everyone's worst NHL deal of the day? There were some strong contenders.

At this point, I think making the playoffs might be a struggle next season as much as I hate to say it.

Is it forgotten that we were a top 5 team without/before Paul Stastny? Couple this with what I believe to be the fact guys like Ehlers, Laine, Connor (Roslovic) will only get better. Everything else is intact (minus Armia... he’s easily replaceable).

This team is poised for another top 5’ish season in the overall standings, in my opinion.

I have 1 more player - Dano at 925k. +925k
I have Petan at 900k instead of 725. His AAV was 863,333 last year. +175k
I have Roslovic at 1,106,666 instead of 1,137,500 -30.834k
I have Copp at 1mil instead of 1.1mil -100k
I have Lowry at 3.2 instead of 3.5 -300k
I have Tanev at 900k instead of 925k -25k
I have Morrissey at 3.2mil instead of 5.5 mil -2300k
I have Trouba at 6mil instead of 6.5 -500k
I have Poolman at 1mil instead of 925k +75k
I have Helle at 5.75mil instead of 5.5mil +250k
I have xxx backup goalie at 1.5mil instead of 650k for Brossoit +850k

Difference of -980.834 my estimate should be below yours.
My total is 78,356,998 for 23 players.
Yours is 78,787,499 for 22 players.
The discrepancy is 430.501k. Not huge but, but I don't see where the addition is different.

I think I will try plugging your numbers into my spreadsheet. I am probably making a transcription error here. Like one of my minuses should be a plus or something.

Stuart buyout 583,333
Hellebuyck, Connor5,500,000
Brossoit, Laurent650,000 Total cap hit:79,464,998
Cap Ceiling79,500,000
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

The Petan number I had is actually too low, the qualifying offer has to be at least 10% higher I think, so I just rounded it up to 950k from around ~945k.

I've realized that I was looking at Copp's actual salary rather than his AAV, and I don't know whose contract I was adding Roslovic's bonus to, but 1,106,666 is the correct number rather than the 1,137,500 I had.
I also added Stuart's buyout which moves the Jets less than 50k from the cap.

So the differences from my new total are:
Lowry at 3.2m (-300k, 79,164,998),
Morrissey at 3.2m (-2.3m, 76,864,998),
Trouba at 6m (-500k, 76,364,998),
Petan at 900k, (-50k, 76,314,998)
Hellebuyck at 5.75m (+250k, 76,564,998),
Backup at 1.5m, (+850k, 77,414,998),
Poolman at 1m, (+75k, 77,489,998),
Dano at 925k, (+925k, 78,414,998)
Tanev at 900k (-25k, 78,389,998)

78,389,998 should be your cap hit if those are the only differences, for a difference of 1,075,000 from my new total, or 33k difference from your own.

The difference between your listed amount (78,356,998) and my new total (79,464,998) should be 1,108,000.

So a total of -3,175,000 difference on Lowry, Morrissey, Trouba, Petan, and Tanev's contracts, and +2,100,000 from Hellebuyck, Brossoit/backup, Poolman, and Dano.

Hey my fellow Jets fan.

Its to early ro be negative :)

Jets are a better team going into the training camp.

No Hendrick

A year older of
LAINE
TROUBA
EHLERS
MORRISSEY
CONNOR
HELLYBUYCK ROSLOVIC

thats you under 25 core.

Then you got
Schiefele
Wheeler
Little
Perrault
Lowry
Buff
Myers
Plus the rest of the gang
Kulikov
Copp
Tanev.

Its time for
Petan and Niku to take the next leap.
Banking on they will.

We got reserve in the pipeline still
Vesalainen
Samberg
Appleton
Berdin
Comrie
Even Stanley is doing ok.

Jets a stack team.

Out of all the team for me. TORONTO is the only 1 than did really got better now and future....

So GO JETS GO.

By not signing Stanley , they might even have room to sign a depth piece once the trade deadline comes around. We don't know what Jets will need by then.

Actually Stastny being sign is not the main concern.
Its who will step in at 2nd Left D spot.

At least we get the Leafs out of the way early this year, the hype around this team will be unbearable from both fans and media, and yes we will be just fine without Stastny, looks like Chevy is going with the replace from within model this year and I think we have some very capable replacements.

Executive summary:
Leafs win the Tavares Sweepstakes
Jets win the Simon Bourque Sweepstakes

I'm a fan of hot-takes but too soon to call a winner.
