I'm seeing a lot of off-base comments about Samorukov. Comparing him to Bear, certainly shows a lack of knowledge on the player.

This guy has always been a stud defensively, and now his offensive game is coming through and it is impressive. His positioning, shot, physicality, size and vision are package that I have rarely seen in all my years watching the OHL. He was arguably the best dman in the world juniors (Bear wasn't there).

I'm telling you, he is our best prospect that isn't playing pro-hockey right now.

Imo I think if you stapled him and Bouchard together in the AHL next year...they would wreck face. Also I would hope they would learn from eachother a bit too

GMs around the league agree about Samorukov too, apparently he is the prospect that is the most asked about
In hindsight, this makes me glad we selected Bouchard, not Dobson. Samorukov projects to be a stud two-way dman, but we wouldn't have a true offensive dynamo without Bouch.

Samorukov - Bouchard could be an excellent pairing in Bako next year.

He has been okay, and is a legit prospect. But he has miles and miles and miles to go. He is scoring well as a 19 year old in the OHL, but that should be expected. Let's see how he does in the AHL next year. Bear was lighting the world on fire in the WHL 3 years ago, and people were all excited, and now he is struggling mightily in his 2nd pro season. Dmen are almost as bad as goalies for projecting. We won't know what we have with this player for 3-4 more years. Yes, his arrows look good right now, but we really don't know much at all about his future.

And this is what OILERNATION needs to understand. Just because a player does great in jr does not necessarily mean he will do great in NHL. He needs seasoning. Samourkov did not have the best camp last year in Edmonton. He will need time. Finally it looks like our cupboards are filling up

I think Oilers fans get that.

But fans get excited about prospects and that’s okay.

We don’t know what they’ll become.

If I had a nickel for every time you came into this topic with some poorly researched view on a prospect. It's always just noise. Usually there's a lot of good opinions back and forth, but when jadeddog posts it's always doomsday statements with no basis in fact.

"He's not tall enough"

"He's having an ok season"

"He's struggling mightily"

It's noise, it's always noise. You have no basis to base your poor posts around. Can you let the people interested in having real discussions about prospects have this topic, and you can do your act on the rest of the board?

To everyone else reading this who doesn't know what's going on with Bear and might have this "opinion" leave a mark on your own, Bear is having a fine season. He started off slow and has picked it up. He's had some injuries, one was a headshot. What I've seen with my own eyes is that he was doing really well before that head injury, and the numbers back it up.

You got your opinion, I have mine. I've been right a lot more than wrong with our prospects over the past 15 years on this site.

I know you are really big on the player, and I think you actually watch OHL games, correct? So you are in a much better position than most, certainly than me, to have an opinion on the player. I surely hope you are right.

I feel like Oiler fans need a yearly refresher on setting expectations of prospects (on both ends of the spectrum). Bear was the best D in the WHL and a top 5 D in the entire CHL. What he did in the WHL was a tremendous, tremendous performance.

What Samurkov is doing is like what Marincin or Simpson did in the WHL/NCAA. Its a good performance, but hes not some special prospect

Likewise, Bear is having a good solid year in the AHL. I remember some poster trying to claim Tyler friggen Benson was having a down year being nearly PPG *in his rookie season*

1) PPG in the CHL is not that great. Its a good performance, but not something to gawk at
2)The AHL is a massive, massive jump

It's about skillset, not about points put up in the CHL.

I remember people saying that Bear was a far better prospect than Jones because of his gaudy stats and awards compared to Jones more pedestrian stats then you watch them play and you can see that Jones had a more projectable skillset with the skating, poise and solid 2 way game. Of course it remains to be seen who will be the better pro but it just goes to show you that CHL stats are only a small part of the equation when projecting to the pros.

This is how I see Samorukov, similar to Jones. Some players you watch and you can see right off the bat that they have a pro skillset and Samorukov is that type of guy. I don't know if he has a ton of upside but he seems like a safe bet to be a solid pro. Whether or not this translates to the next level? Well, we'll just have to wait and see.

Two goals for Maksimov tonight so far. And two slashing penalties in the third, including one just now, up 5-4. This kid is going to be hated by his coaches in pro hockey.

When we drafted him, I was ecstatic. I couldn't believe he fell to us

We don’t know what they’ll become.

Our problem in the past is they don’t get surrounded with proper coaching and a supporting cast. The revolving door of coaches can’t help either. We have drafted a few players and they have become complete duds here. On the other hand, we have let other players move on who have become good players on other teams.
Good thing there is a gong show going on in Ottawa. It takes some of the spotlight of this train wreck

What is the overall line on Bear this year? I see he might have been injured a bit this year . Has he taken a step back in his development or is he getting passed by other prospects? We had big hopes for him last year as a PP QB

He's been banged up off and on pretty much all season, so that certainly hasn't helped his development. He seems to have been passed by Jones, but I still hold out some hope for Bear eventually.

I had him as our Brian Rafalski from the Devils in their cup days. Both are around the same size and could be great options on the pp. When he was up on the Oilers, I had hope

You got your opinion, I have mine. I've been right a lot more than wrong with our prospects over the past 15 years on this site.

This is the problem with the internet generation, and that generation is all ages...young and old. They think that all opinions are created equal. You said Bear was struggling. He has 13 points in his last 15 games. He's been injured. He would be pacing for top 20 in the league for defensemen if he wasn't injured.

So let's break down our "opinions" again.

I'm basing mine off seeing him physically play 7 or 8 times this season. I'm also basing mine off his stats and where he places among his teammates and contemporaries around the league.

Now, detail your opinion why you think he's struggling this season.

If not, step out, and let people serious about prospects have this topic to themselves.

Yes, you are "serious", and I am not. Jesus man, listen to yourself. You might be right about Bear, but proclaiming yourself to be "serious", whilst people who dare disagree with you are not, well.... I'll let others pass judgement on that attitude.

I could be wrong about Bear, but I don't see anything that says he'll be more than a PP-specialist in the NHL. Yes, he scores points, and has a very good shot. But he was an absolute train-wreck defensively in the NHL last year. "Struggling" might have been a little harsh, but he certainly hasn't stepped up like everybody was hoping this year, and Jones has passed him on the depth chart for sure.
