The last time the top 3 was not some variation of North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota was the 10-11 season and that was because Michigan had a game at the big house. That is the only time since the 01-02 season that someone else was top 3.

Makes sense considering no one else has capacities that big.
% of full would be a much better indicator than per game numbers.

In a reversal argument, if the big three had rink sizes like that of the majority of college hockey they would be at 100% capacity every single game.

And Ohio State has the biggest rink in college hockey by a rather significant margin (almost 2,200 more seats than the Kohl Center, the second biggest rink).

All in saying is pure numbers are misleading.

You don't think 100% of 5K would be a better indicator of support than 50% of 10K?
Is it fair for teams that use larger multi-purpose buildings? What about 100% of 5k vs 70% of 15k (i.e. 5,000 vs 10,500)? Do you think it'd be hard for Minnesota/Wisconsin/North Dakota to fill a 5k barn like Michigan's? I don't think one can argue that the three largest support/fan bases in college hockey are those three teams. When I had season tickets to Badger hockey they were at 94% capacity for the entire season, an overall number that almost TRIPLES the 5,000 at 100%. That's 14,430 fans per game at the Kohl Center. I could think of two fanbases that could come close to that number (well, if Minnesota were to ever get their heads out of their asses in regards to ticket prices), the rest would never get near that number even if they had the barn to fit them all.

Well that's not really a comparable to anything. The best we have is Penn State selling out a less than 6,000 seat building. If you expand capacity to 10,000 do they still sell it out? We don't know but that would be a comparable. Do I think Minnesota-Duluth filling a building of 6,756 at 89% capacity is more impressive than Wisconsin filling a 15,359 building at 65% capacity? No, not really and that's not even taking quality of teams into account which also has to be factored in.

Because doing that costs a lot of money.
Anything involving Alaska or Hawaii for college sports will always make me scratch my head. I understand that they shouldn't be left out of the college sports world because they are not connected to the mainland, but I wonder how much of the bill they pick up if any for opposing teams travelling.

I know in hockey, if you travel to play either of the Alaska teams, the NCAA allows you to add a home game to your schedule.

The alaska teams have been picking up a huge tab for years. 16000+ per weekend plus rent for their building in UAA's case.
UAH may be able to go to the AHA...the Alaska schools die.

That would be nice. 8 teams would almost make it like a real conference.

Nebraska has some wrinkles to iron out as well but are looking into adding hockey. So too are Iowa. Years away from those two though I think I read.

Jonny Sorenson: Fairbanks to Dinkytown

Jonny Sorenson commits to the Gophers after tasking a gap year playing NAHL hockey up in Alaska. Was always an excellent athlete...I always thought of him more as a Football or baseball player. Wonder if he'll spend some time in the USHL first.
