I'd pass on Vanek. Don't know if you're getting good Vanek or lazy Vanek.

Which Vanek is the lazy one?

2016-2017 48 points (60 games)
2015-2016 41 points (74 games)
2014-2015 52 points ( 80 games)
2013-2014 68 points (78 games)
2012-2013 41 points (38 games)

Let's say he played around 65 games in 2017-2018 (due to injury or struggling). It would give us a chance to try some of our prospects out throughout the season. In terms of position, moving to RW could benefit him (he's listed as playing both sides--not sure what position he played most last season).

It's from Cap Friendly and clearly states that a player who played zero games last season are able to be placed on SOIR and don't count against a team's salary Cap. I believe they are correct but either way the Leafs don't presently have a Cap issue and don't need to dump anyone.

Again, you're misunderstanding. Let me break down what Cap Friendly says:
What is the season opening injured reserve (SOIR)?
If a player is injured during training-camp, they can be placed on season-opening injured reserve, to possibly obtain cap relief. It is notable that the SOIR equations are not the same as the daily rate equations in CBA 15.6, which is instead used to calculate the players daily salary (as opposed to cap hit).

The most important language here is "injured during training camp". The actual CBA language itself says "who becomes disabled during Training Camp, or who reports to Training Camp disabled as the result of a hockey related injured incurred during the off-season". In other words SOIR does not apply to injuries that occurred during a prior hockey season. i.e. Horton and Lupul.

Full Cap Hit
Players who are on a one-way contract, or players on a two-way contract who accrued 50 or more NHL games in the previous season count fully against the cap hit. Teams can opt to place these players on LTIR to obtain cap-relief (LTIR FAQ).

Now this section. Horton and Lupul are on 1-way contracts. The team can put them on LTIR. Stop here, do not proceed any further when evaluating Horton and Lupul.

Discounted Cap Hit
Players on a two-way contract, who accrued 1-49 NHL games in the previous season, count against the teams cap hit; however, the reduced cap hit is calculated as follows:
Multiply the players NHL cap hit by the total accrued NHL days in the previous season, and divide by the total number of days in the previous season (Ex: 186 for 2014-15)

When a player is reactivated to the active roster, their cap hit reverts back to the full rate

These are the players that qualify for SOIR. Players on 2-way contracts who accrued less then 50 NHL games the prior season. Note: accrued is not the same as games played. A player receives credit for an accrued game if they were on the active roster, or on IR as a result of an hockey related injury.

Full cap relief
Players who did not accrue any NHL games in the previous season, can be placed on SOIR and do not count against their teams cap hit.

This is an extension of the previous paragraph. Players on 2-way contracts who were injured during training camp or the offseason, and who did not accrue any NHL games last season have no cap hit while they are on SOIR.

Bought out by the Wild for dragging ass. 41 points in 74 games is totally unacceptable for somebody of his skill set. IIRC he was healthy scratched for quite a few games that year too.

Finally hit me today that Stepan was in the Desert for 17-18 season. Do you guys foresee him and Domi playing together on the 1st line? I'm looking forward to seeing Domi's progression this season, hopefully a consistent 1C will help him out.

Vanek has always been lazy and soft and one dimensional. I don't really care, though. 30-40% of his production has come on the PP the last few seasons. That's more of an issue. Like Pho, I'd prefer to give those minutes to kids. Unless he plays the point on the PP. I haven't paid much attention to him lately. I remember him playing some point earlier in his career. Anyone have any insight there?

Duclair has great chemistry with Domi. Duclair has great chemistry with Stepan. Domi and Duclair had great chemistry with Sam Reinhart. Derek Stepan and Sam Reinhart play nearly identical games. It stands to reason that Domi-Stepan-Duclair will be a line with good chemistry and will be the team's #1 line.

I like the Clendening signing as much as anyone. But that's a lot of eggs in the one basket. I want another option from the right point on the PP.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess the Twitter account with 228 followers linking to a blog with exactly one post doesn't have a lot of inside information to share.

True..... even the Easter Bunny Twitter guy from three years ago had a nearly 8k followers. Although most were from porn bots and a few suspect accounts from the Middle East. ;)

As far as random twitter rumors, I prefer the one that says we made an offer for Brendan Gallagher.

I'd love to add him.

Spooner would be okay. He'd probably help the PP. But we've got lots of left wings, and he isn't good enough defensively to play center. Not sure where he fits at center or leftwing. Shouldn't knock Dvo or Stepan from the top six. Isn't going to fit in the bottom six if they're planning on Cousins and Strome there.

I thought he played C. But you are right, I'm not buying it either.

The general consensus among Bruins fans seems to be he hasn't done well at Center. Wasn't adequate defensively and poor on faceoffs.

I don't know the full breakdown of his usage with Boston, but just looking at his faceoff totals suggests he spent much of 2015-16 at Center and most of 2016-17 at Wing.

What other forwards do we have that have scored (or could score) 41 points? Domi? a re-kindled Duclair? possibly Rieder (if he gets lucky)? Avoiding the sophomore slump Perlini or Dvorak?
