had to go back to talking about the NBA and the BBB whining about officiating in summer league ball

Well not really, they had Intentional Talk on after but at that point just skip that show for a day. I don't really need to hear Chris Rose and Kevin Millar give their hot takes on the Dodgers not helping the team enough (before the Darvish trade went down).

Nats went out and fixed the only real issue they had and it probably gets them at least past the Cubs. Then who knows with the Dodgers

Why did the Astros not do more? I think they could use another starting pitcher.
They weren't going to overpay for a starter. Not sure if they felt Gray was any better then Keuchel and McCullers. If Gray wasn't any better then those 2 then Lynn wasn't for sure. Would have cost Houston more then what L.A. paid to get Darvish from Texas. Their GM said they wouldn't gut their minor league roster to make a trade. Verlander is making too much money as well. I also said it in the Liriano thread. They were close to getting Britton but the owner kept upping the price.

Tried to get a lot done today, working on many things simultaneously. Acquiring a pitcher like Liriano was a priority for us. Not only a starter but reliever & postseason experience. Really think he can help this club out in an area of great need. Think he'll get some big outs for us down the stretch & in the postseason if we're fortunate enough to make it. Got experience & stuff & will be a positive for us.

Role?

Will leave it up to AJ & Brent Strom. His numbers against LHH, he's been extremely effective. We'll face good lefties down the stretch. We need someone to get those guys out. He's got that experience. He can do anything. Pitch multiple innings, start, relieve, be a specialist.

2nd consecutive deadline without a big move. Why not this year?

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed in not getting some of the moves done we were working on. We had some close to & almost over the finish line. At times, I would have put them at 90%+ that we would have gotten them done. There's a lot of dynamics happening with these deals & for reasons I can't talk about, they didn't happen. I believe this team has what it takes to win in the postseason with the players we have. Doesn't mean we didn't try hard to improve those chances, even just a little bit. Each little bit you can improve helps. We tried. Early in the trading season, cost was high on all players. They did come down a little bit in certain areas where we thought we had some deals done & we were excited about. They didn't happen so we move on.

These guys are professionals & want to win. It doesn't affect their desire to win one bit. They'll continue to do their job & we have a good chance to win a lot this year. They know we tried.

Luhnow said Fisher asked about in "almost every deal." Said other prospects were, too.

n using Liriano in the bullpen. He has some experience doing a little of everything: multi-inning relief, starting & LH reliever. He should be here tomorrow. He pitched Saturday. Could be a couple days before he pitches.

Disappointed you guys didn't add more?

You're always curious what is possible. Our job in the clubhouse is to rally around the each other & be the team we are. We have issues to address when it comes to getting healthy & getting our team back together. Down here, our job is to play our ass off & win as many games as we can. Additions, subtractions, the trades, there's a lot going on around baseball that people are curious about. The 25 guys in the clubhouse, our coaches, me, our staff inside have to focus on what we have & not what we don't have. It's important we try to win games.

We'll feel better once we right the ship health wise. There's always concern when your best players are unavailable. Doesn't mean we can't win games or series. July has turned into a month where everyone pays attention to outside the clubhouse. Now that this has passed, not that teams don't change in August or September, but I'm glad we can get back to focusing on who's here & what lies ahead.

Wasn't this guy supposed to be a can't miss prospect? I also believe he was the reason why Texas moved Kinsler after he balked at playing the OF. Good news is that Odur wound up surpassing Profar.

This is why they're only prospects until further notice. It's a crap shoot.

Wow. Rosenthal with TONS of info on the Astros deadline day:

I wonder who the unidentified high end reliever was. Clearly, a meddling owner killed that deal. For it to be a surprise, it must have been a fairly young pitcher.

Except for the mystery player, basically what we already knew. Astros tried, things broke down or weren't really as available (Darvish).

unfortunately for houston, the fact that gray and darvish were both in the same division pretty much killed their chances of acquiring either one. who else was really left? verlander? i'm sure they called detroit about him but nothing materialized

i'm certain they'll land someone through waivers pretty soon

Gray could have been had, but they weren't willing to pay the price.

Do I blame them? Nope, but at a certain point you have to deal some of these prospects for the now. Especially when you already have guys in positions at the ml level who will presumably be there for awhile.

I wouldn't really say Odor wound up surpassing Profar. He played while Profar was injured. Now he doesn't look anymore appealing offensively, and certainly not defensively.

the orioles are such a mess.

That's the understatement of the year :handclap:

Yea he was the best prospect in baseball at one point, the thing is it was hard for them to find a spot for him. They've just been so good at every position the last couple years, plus he being injured didn't help. it gave Odor a chance to play at 2B, Mazara in the OF and then Gallo a chance at 1B and 3B.

Not sure I'd agree. I don't know how confident I am with Doolitle/Kintzler in the later innings of a playoff game when guys like Brad Hand and Zach Britton were purportedly available.

Hand wasn't ever available. Angelos wouldn't allow Britton to be traded.

Hand was definitely available. Problem is he is controlled for the next 2 seasons on top of this one which means his trade value is enourmous. It wouldve taken a top tier prospect like a Verdugo to start to get it done.

I know the Dodgers were in on him and the Padres hung up the proverbial phone when the Dodgers said no chance on getting Verdugo.

either Kenny has it wrong or it sounds like it was misreported that Angelos nixed the Britton trade.

Roberto Osuna, maybe?

I doubt anyone would have been naive to ask for Osuna as you'd have to literally give up the farm to get him. If the ask for a guy like Brad Hand was a teams top prospect to get the conversation started I can't even imagine what the Jays would want for Osuna.

I don't know how Hand is comparable considering teams felt that was a ridiculous ask.

The guy in your AVI gave up the 2nd/3rd best prospect in baseball (depending on who you use for rankings) in Gleyber Torres for 2 months of Aroldis Chapman.

Hand is a top closer in the game with years of control after this one. Asking for a top prospect isn't really a ridiculous ask.

They mismanaged the living hell out of him. If he didn't have just two years of control left, he'd be easily movable.

From Rosenthal:

The Astros, after getting caught in the Orioles’ tangled web, chose not to make a run at the Padres’ Hand, the third quality left-handed reliever on the market, after Britton and Wilson. Those talks, sources said, disintegrated down over differences in Hand’s perceived value.

The Astros and other teams considered the Padres’ asking price as unreasonable, but one Padres official said the club did not ask for any players ranked among the game’s top 100 prospects - a claim disputed by executives from two of Hand's suitors after the initial publishing of this story.

Considering Hand wasn't dealt, it isn't a big leap of logic to say that the gap here was consistent across the league.

Also, there's a large difference between Chapman and Hand. The track record isn't nearly there.
