Eberle's next contract will be interesting. If we judge by Neal's and JVR's contracts this summer, Eberle could be looking at Draisatl money in UFA.
Very doubtful
He's not going to be paid as a top 15 player in the league. JVR has had two consecutive better seasons and got 7mil.

Unless he goes on a very good run this year I don't see him getting much more than he's getting now.

Meh, what other choice did they have? Tampa chose not to trade Stamkos in the end and they were still able to sign him 2 days away from hitting free agency. I don't blame Isles for trying to do the same. With these really big names you really have to take your chances. If you trade them you know they're 100% gone. Isles still had a good amount of hope he'd sign there.

So I completely disagree with you. If it's your franchise guy you just have to do everything you can to sign him, even if it means you'll lose out and get nothing for him in the end. If it were a player like Ryan O'Reilly (just as an example) then I'd agree with you and say that you definitely should trade if you can't get the player signed. But franchise guys are different, you don't trade them unless they make absolutely clear that they are not going to re-sign, and from what I read that wasn't the case at all with Tavares.

except Stamkos is maybe the 3rd best player on Tampa and they've been a great team for a while now, easier to convince a guy to stick around when the team is good

The Tampa Bay Lightning carried significantly less risk given that they could afford to let Stamkos walk.

Without Tavares the Islanders are in a full on tear down.

I wonder what ownership is thinking. The only thing that hasn't happened is one of their RFA's signing an offer sheet.

But Lou the saviour hasn't been able to do anything. Going to have to sell them on rebuilding now.

That defense is just so horrid the past few years and they've lost Hamonic and De Haan both in the past years. Boychuk playing less minutes and games every year now. Pelech and Pulock need to really step up big time for them this year.

If reports are true, NYI offered him the most money. Not much else Lou could do.

Snow could have traded him at the deadline but that doesn't avoid the rebuild scenario it just accelerates it slightly.

Tavares wouldn’t waive his NTC

Just a thought, but I don't think that Toronto is really the contender everyone assumes right now.

What they brought with Tavares is that they will be a lock to make the playoffs and have a decent shot every year. However, they are not in the same tier as Tampa or Washington, and if Tampa gets Karlsson it won't even be close. Toronto's blue line does match what the top teams have. Maybe Pittsburgh gives them some hope there, but that seems to be an exception, and perhaps the result of the clearer contenders having off years

JVR out, Tavares in

net gain of what, 25 points on average? And an extra 4 million cap hit (based on new contracts)

I'm not saying I wouldn't have done the same thing as Dubas, but is this really a world changer?

yeah, at first the math is simple. Toronto was a playoff team without Tavares, and Tavares is an elite player, so clearly they are top tier team now... except not so fast there. They are clearly better now, but still not built like contender

And this is not Toronto hate from me. I think they will probably win a cup with Tavares at some point. It's just that they are not up there with Tampa or Washington. I'd even say that those teams have forward groups as good as Toronto's, all while having such an advantage at defense.

JVR is also better defensively. Toronto planning the parade route is a tad premature.

JVR was one of the worst defensive players on the Leafs. There's a reason he was sheltered beyond belief. The guy was lazy and slow in his own end. Not sure how you confused JVR for a guy that can play defense in any way shape or form but he cant and he's a power play specialist.
