Then remember — via Larry Granillo of Wezen-Ball from back in 2010 — that one Hall of Fame voter, Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post, has already said that he knows a current Hall of Famer used steroids. He said it on camera, in Ken Burns’ motherf—ing “Tenth Inning”:

“There was another player now in the Hall of Fame who literally stood with me and mixed something and I said “What’s that?” and he said “it’s a Jose Canseco milkshake”. And that year that Hall of Famer hit more home runs than ever hit any other year. So it wasn’t just Canseco, and so one of the reasons that I thought that it was an important subject was that it was spreading. It was already spreading by 1988.”

Steroid use in baseball was “alarming” as of 1973. As of 1988 a guy who is now in the Hall of Fame was taking “Jose Canseco milkshakes,” which clearly meant steroids.

listened to a podcast yesterday where they went through all of the candidates. edmonds, they both agreed, was someone that neither would vote for but neither would have an issue with going in eventually from the veteran's committee. i feel the same way. there was a stretch of time where jim edmonds was one of the very best players in baseball w/r/t his defense and putting up a 154 ops+ with elite defense in his first six years in st. louis.

i think there's a fairly large chasm between "hall of very good" guys like edmonds, evans, lofton, grich and even giles and falling off the ballot after one or two ballots.

His 2000-2005 is ridiculous

.292/.406/.584, 210 HR, .413 wOBA, 40.1 WAR (and 6 gold gloves). Third highest total WAR in that era behind Bonds and A-Rod

Its too bad he got hurt in 1999 - if he put up career norm numbers he would've had 11 straight years with 4+ WAR. Even so for the 11 year stretch from 1995-2005 he had the...third highest total WAR in that era behind Bonds and A-Rod

(can't copy and paste because the times website sucks).

plus, it's been asked a million times on this board, why are amphetamines and speed ignored? what about koufax's injections in his arm near the end of his career? why is cortisone okay with everyone? what about the fact that usage exemptions of adderall are rising in mlb?

Is that better or worst than Steroids?

It's similar to the greenies situation in the 70's Bob alluded to above. I would venture to say that was even more pervasive than the steroid era in terms of player % generally because it really wasn't being hidden at all.

hank aaron admitted to taking greenies "once". teams took greenies and speed throughout the 50's and 60's. before that there were guys injecting horse steroids into themselves.

eventually some people are going to figure out that the days of a guy doing nothing but drinking milk and beating his wife in the offseason to stay in shape never happened.

I find it amusing when people think that steroids were a 90s thing. Steroids were around way before any of us were born.

Anybody with a brain capable of research would have found this out already. Several members of the BBWAA don't have this capability.

Chris "Mad Dog" Russo is a blowhard.
Agreed. He said that lead off hitters such as Raines should not get in unless they won an MVP. Costas, Lowell, and Verducci mostly ignored him, it was such a stupid statement.
