Since this has come up regarding the QOs - every RFA D that is left-handed was not given a QO, correct?

I would take this to mean that we are heavily invested in signing or trading for a LHD who can fill 15-18 mins a night, preferably on the PK. Only if we do not consummate the trade or signings do we start to consider Tinordi, Connauton, or Dahlbeck. FWIW, I think that Dahlbeck stays and we let Tinordi and Connauton walk if we sign/trade for whom I think we have our sights on.

Either that or we are super sold on Chykrun's ability to be an NHL player

Dale Weise could be a nice addition at RW.

Dale Weise fights now and again, but he's mostly an agitator. He provides a little offense for the bottom six, which is nice. But he doesn't kill penalties, or anything. I see him as a good support player, overall, but I'm not sure I like him as a fit for our team. I think we need someone who can be a little more specialized. Specifically someone who can move the needle on team toughness or improve our PK. I don't think he really does either.

Ewww, please no

Luckily for us Greg Wyshynski is an idiot so I put little stock in whatever he says

Okposo kind of seems like a Boedker with more of a scoring touch. I wonder about him because he's mostly played with Tavares and that definitely will inflate your stats. I don't know if i'd want to pay him what he's going to be looking for, but maybe Chayka sees something in the advanced stats that we don't

I'd happily pay Okposo for a season. Next summer, the buyer's remorse will set in when there are better options available for a similar price. Then when youngsters need new contracts, we'll probably end up buying him out. He's one of those guys who'll get a five year deal, but by year three everyone will be sneering and wincing.

7-8 million aav? that would be risky. Excluding bringing some of the guys back from last year, I could see them spending $8 million in total aav next year for 2-3 players in FA. But on one guy, I would be nervous. They would pay $55 million in real salaries and 62-63 for the salary cap?

Any names we need to be pouncing on? One guy that sticks out is Devante Smith-Pelley.

I think the player Okposo would be a good fit but the expected Okposo contract would not.

I mentioned earlier we could go after a RHS RW like Drew Stafford for considerably less.

Devils want to re-sign DSP at a lower rate than his qualifier.

Do we take another crack at Matthias Plachta?

Stuart Percy is interesting. Could play a LD role in Tucson.

Also... Didn't see it for myself but I guess the Hockey Central guys once again mentioned Arizona as a darkhorse candidate for Stamkos.

yeah i was watching, they pretty much said that the 3 teams on lake Erie: Detroit Buffalo Toronto, were the top candidates, briefly mentioned Arizona and Florida Panthers, then admitted to have no idea what they were talking about and said that there were 29 teams interested in Stamkos lol. No evidence whatsoever for any team. the analyst that they had on, Johnston i believe his name is, said he thought there was going to be a sign-and-trade deal go down.

When Chayka was hired, we were told that one of his missions would be to find gems at a reasonable price.

It does not look to me that Okposo's price will be at all reasonable. Nor will be Stamkos'.

DSP looks more like the kind of signings, I agree. He is young, he is a right shooting guy, and progression has been interesting.

John Michael Liles?

Meh - too much offense, need a little more of a defensive presence, IMO. Thinking a cheaper, left handed version of Roman Polak for the 3rd pairing.

Ron Hainsey is a UFA after next season. He logged a lot of minutes on the PK last year. Alzner would likely cost too much, and he would be closer to a 3/4 than a 5/6 pairing. Smid would be great to look as a quick pick-up, if his health and play wasn't declining so much.

I am totally fine with looking at these teams that need to reduce cap hit and grab a contract for a year or two, tops. Provided that the player can be a steady individual on the PK, that is all I ask.

Ian Cole? Kyle Quincey?

JML played on the same team as Hainsey last season. Hainsey played on the first PK unit with Slavin and JML played on the 2nd PK unit with Faulk. It was a top 10 PK in the NHL.

Cole would be a fine pick up. He also played on the 2nd PK unit of a top 10 PK team last season.

I just want a little more size than what JML has to offer. Just hard to believe that we would stand up well on the PK against some of the Anaheim and San Jose forward lines crashing the net with one of Gogo or JML on the ice at that time (assuming that OEL is going to be kept off the ice on those occasions).

Cole is near the top of my wish list. And of course, any trades for players whose contract expires after this or next year is fine.

I still like the idea of Fehr and Cole because of their strong PK'ing. Pens were 5th overall, and both Fehr and Cole averaged > 2 minutes a game on the PK.

Fehr as the 4th line right wing and Cole as third-pairing LHD will vastly improve the PK, and they're relatively cheap: Cole earns $2.1m and Fehr $2m. They're signed through 2017-18, but I can't imagine the cost to acquire both would be much.

That looks really good on the defensive end.

FWIW, I would keep Michalek penciled in at 3rd pair, keep DeAngelo in the AHL (at least push him back there when we are confident in Stone's health), and re-sign Dahlbeck short term to make him our 7th D. Pretty sure that Dahlbeck could play right side, and maybe even Gogo as well if we wanted to keep Dahlbeck on the left.

Then, Cole and Dahlbeck hit FA right about the time we figure out what we have with Chychrun. Very appealing.

Scevior was on a top PK unit in Dallas and is UFA. Has stronger possession numbers than Fehr. Of course, Fehr has the added benefit of taking RHS FOs, as does Jooris. The same can't be said of Scevior.

why do the Pens give up Cole? 27 yr old rounding into a top 4 guy, decent contract... Some expansion risk...but he's likely worth protecting
