Yes

When was the last time we acquired someone through waivers?

Years, but a more accurate question would be how often do we put in claims. We put in a claim for Nieto but he went to COL who were the first team on the list.

Most teams don't utilize waivers very often, and like we've seen with guys like Etem and Boucher when teams do claim guys more often than not they don't stick. The last waiver acquisition I can think of who has earned a regular spot with his new team would maybe be Paul Byron in MTL.

Good teams usually don't get a chance to claim guys because even if they put in a claim anybody decent gets scooped up by the bottom feeders, and guys on waivers usually aren't worth claiming as anything other than plugs. Goalies can be a different story just because of how volatile the position is.

Avs were probably wanting Ryan as an offensive replacement to Duchene/Landeskog when they trade one for a dman.

Ryan+ for Landeskog + Beauchemin was probably never a thing. More likely Ryan + Claesson + 3rd/4th for Beauchemin + Comeau. Or Ryan + Claesson + Hammond for Beauchemin + Varlamov + Comeau.

Getting Varlamov in a deal for Ryan wouldn't have been the worst move if Anderson is not able to consistently return this season. A change of scenery might do Varlamov well, and in the past he has had near elite level seasons. If Varly returned to form here, and if Anderson's return is in question, it is the type of move that could arguably make us better going forward.

Anderson and Varlamov would combine for 9M next season in salary which is similar to what Ryan+Hammond would cost us assuming COL takes Hammond back. So it would be a salary in/salary out deal for this season and the next one with the benefit that Varlamov's deal ends in 2019 and he could possibly be a successor to Anderson who'll be 37 years of age when his contract is up and might be ready to either fall back into a #2 role or retire. (He could still be a starting calibre goalie, but that isn't common at that age).

If people are rolling with the Ryan shot down a trade rumour that Benji posted about in the other thread, COL makes a lot of sense because it is a team that most players probably don't want to go to right now. COL has a really flexible cap situation so they could look at this as an opportunity to buy low on a top 6 forward with some warts.

If Ryan was going to COL, I doubt we would be getting one of their other top 6 forwards back. Especially since Beauchemin's name has been brought up, I could see something around a Ryan for Beauchemin and a depth forward with COL adding asset(s) and Ottawa possibly retaining a bit on Ryan. Pickard makes sense for Ottawa if the trade is Ryan for Beauchemin, but it doesn't seem like COL wants to keep Varlamov over Pickard. I guess it is possible we could get him because of the expansion draft and COL only being able to protect 1 goalie.

A talented center is actually available(Duchene) and Ceci picks this year of all years to play poorly.

Typical Ottawa Senators luck.

If you draft a player with poor hockey sense, then rush him to the league, force him to play a role far above his capabilities, and pair him with absolutely terrible defensemen, you shouldn't be surprised if that player doesn't end up developing as expected.

Luck has nothing to do with it.

Also, as RKL has mentioned before, if Dorion hadn't jumped the gun and moved Zibanejad for Brassard, we'd be in an excellent situation in regards to moving him for Duchene.

Can't stress enough how much Sens management has hurt this team. They should be paid by MLSE, not Melnyk.

Via friedman's 30 thoughts:

10. Who’s looking? Chicago, Los Angeles and Ottawa, for a forward. Tampa Bay, for something to send a jolt through the roster. The Bruins are clearly ready to do something. GM Don Sweeney had a blunt interview with the Boston Globe’s Fluto Shinzawa last weekend. Asked about coach Claude Julien, Sweeney replied, “I’m not avoiding the question.... You have to look at every different thing.” But the sense is he’d rather make a trade before changing the coach. St. Louis will add, too.

24. NHL teams that left the event feeling particularly good about themselves were Boston, Minnesota and Ottawa. As mentioned, the Bruins have some talented young defencemen, led by Charlie McEvoy, who “exceeded expectations that were high to begin with.”

29. When a coach like Guy Boucher steadfastly refuses to answer questions about someone (like he’s doing with Bobby Ryan), I wonder if it’s because he honestly can’t. If the discipline or situation becomes an NHL/NHLPA issue, the muzzle is mandated.

Apparently Bob McKenzie said Tampa is willing to trade "anybody" to help on defense. What do you think we could fetch with Ceci, or Ceci + Ryan?

Tampa Bay has litteraly no cap for Ryan... need to get Johnson back and a ton other players to sign.

Ceci for Palat? Ceci for almost any of their top 6 forwards works for me

Thing is he played well at the second half of last year. His play took a huge nosedive.

Considering Larsson went for Hall and Jones went for Johansen, yes that would definitely be way too much to give up for Palat.

He'd be a great fit for this team though. Would fit nice with Turris and Dzingel imo.

Palat-Turris-Dzingel can be hot.

Yeah, not even a question.

Palat is their 4th best forward at best behind Kucherov/Drouin/Stamkos.

Stamkos and Kucherov are better than Stone. Drouin is not better than Palat IMO but that's debatable. He's more dynamic but he doesn't touch Palat's 200 ft game.

I'd take Stone over Palat, but Palat is very close.
