Yes, Johsnon might be a better option as it would open 800k more in cap space but unless im severely miss reading the goalie market im taking that deal. Solves depth #7 and MAF contract issues

No.

I target duchene and weircoch plus their goalie at the cost of fluery, sprong, pooh and first. If we can unload kunitz in the deal, all the better.

Good luck with that, there's absolutely no chance that the Avs would go for that. Why would they want Fleury? They have Russian Fleury in Varlamov already.

Calgary IMO has always been the most likely destination...

1. Has previously shown interest
2. Right there at the bottom in goaltending
3. Doesnt have the money tied up like Dallas or a young guy on the roster like Winnipeg
4. Struck out on a Bishop trade and sign in the offseason.

Rather not take Engellend back but Calgary is close to the cap and salary would almost have to come back.

So Engelland and Elliott for Fleury. Do you do it?

No. Why would I want to use all of my cap space on a Dmen that doesn't fit our system and a goalie?

I'd much rather do Fleury for Elliott+3rd and go after Kulikov or someone that fits our system better.

It looks like Calgary is right up against the cap though so not sure how else to make it work. Maybe a blockbuster and send them Maatta for Hamilton or something.

That's exactly why it would have to be Engelland or Wideman plus a goalie for MAF. It can't just be Fleury for Elliott and a pick.

If the Penguins trade for someone like Kulikov (which I anticipate they do), Engelland is only the #8 when everyone is healthy. I'd much rather have Engelland as the #8 over Olesky.

I guess with Olli's LTIR space we can make that work. I don't see why it's Engelland vs Oleksy for number 8. It's pretty clear to me now that Ruhwedel is higher on the depth chart now.

Olesky has been up with the Penguins for a lot longer than Ruhwedel has been though. He's been consistently with the NHL Penguins as a healthy scratch. I'd be fine with bringing in Engelland if it meant shipping out Fleury, I don't think he'd play enough or is bad enough to be a detriment.

I'd much rather do Fleury for Elliott and a 3rd and then a 3rd for Wiercioch or Smith, I just don't see that as possible due to the cap with the Flames.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but yeah. They could still move Fehr or Bonino to make the cap work if Maatta+ for Duchene was still on the table.

I'm pretty sure that was never "on the table" aside from perhaps some wild message board speculation.

Duchene to Pittsburgh was a legit rumor from various sources and Maatta was mentioned in many of those sources. I don't know what you've been paying attention to by saying it's just board speculation.

Pretty cool that JR signed Guentzel to a 3 year deal this past offseason, and not a 2 year deal. That could end up quite a bargain.

And what credible sources where they that said a Maatta+ for Duchene deal was "on the table" or legitimately in the works? Kypreos said JR "might take a run at him" and JR told Friedman that he would "do anything to win." The rest was filled in with speculation and suggesting a deal involving Maatta for Duchene was even close is entirely baseless. Also, a "legit" rumor is pretty oxymoronic when you're saying there were actual sources. That wouldn't have been a "rumor" then.

JBomb's take on a rental D. He thinks Smith and Kulikov make the most sense and Franson makes no sense, saying Franson looks a lot better on paper than he actually is.

I would agree with that.

Focus on Kulikov now, try to get Smith for cheap at the TDL. Maybe use that OTT 5th.

Lots of pieces for Kulikov that Sabres may be interested in too. MAF, Fehr, Bonino, Pouliot...they have Lehner, Kulikov, and picks that would be of interest to us. Lots of options there.

I don't think Duchene will be moved before the off season. I just don't see it. I see Sakic wanting too much. I think it's an either or. Lando or Matt now, the other after the season is done.

Good news is, Maatta is signed for a while so that trade chip is always there.

I think the only way to go after Smith is if Maatta is moved. I think they go after Kulikov regardless. Question is, when 100% healthy...who do you run?

Dumo-Letang
Maatta-Daley-Kulikov
Cole-Schultz

Who sits? Gotta assume it's Maatta or Daley but...tough choice. I'm guessing the rest of the season about be a mix and match game to see who works best with who.

What about: MAF+Daley to Dallas for Niemi+Hudler or Sharp?

Man it is going to be a good or disappointing deadline for us.

Eh maybe. Depends on how you define disappointing. They can bolster the lineup with a couple small trades and shipping Kunitz out. That'd be enough for me assuming they can't get rid of Fleury. It's looking like everyone will be ready for the playoffs except Rust barring future injuries. If we touch up the roster enough to have a go at it that's all I can ask for.

Who said anything about that deal being in the process of being completed? I said there were rumors about it being a possibility, which is 100% true. Was it just speculation on behalf of the rumor people like Friedman and Kypreos? Yeah, but you have no way of knowing that, so passing off the Duchene for Maatta rumors as "nothing but board speculation" is just hilariously obtuse.

Essentially, saying that Maatta+ for Duchene is solely "board speculation" when actual insiders are speculating (or even more) about it is just wrong.

Franson is pretty awful. Kulikov is definitely more enticing as he can play solid shut-down defense which is what we need more of than anything IMO. Wings fans are seemingly of the opinion that Smith is a train-wreck. I don't know enough about him myself but he could be another buy-low option that the Pens love taking chances on.

If it's Kunitz for Kulikov and then whatever JR was looking at for forwards, I'm ok with that, the team gets Maatta back by the playoffs and Schultz is gone for how long?
