This has likely been asked a dozen times but when can Zaitsev be signed?

He plays for CSKA Moscow. They are down a game in the quarter-finals to Torpedo(if the wikipedia site is up to date).

So as early as next week or as far off as next month.

Awesome, I didn't realize it could be so soon.
Something to look forward to.

ew do not want Kris Russell as a first pairing guy playing with Rielly. Gogo or Demers would be better

I'm wondering what we're going to do with all our forwards?

Assuming Nylander, Kadri and Bozak up the centre (and Laich, though our 4th line C doesn't matter). So how do we fit all these wingers in?

Soshnikov
Komarov
JVR
Marner
Hyman
Leivo
Michalek
Laine/Pulj (unless we end up 1st or 4th)
Potentially Holland
Potentially Brown

People thinking we will be drafting laine, do you guys see him in the nhl next year?

I personally do. I mean yeah, he could play in the AHL, but he has NHL size, an NHL shot and would benefit more from acclimating to the pace of the NHL from camp and Babcock's system, and he could work with Barbara.

Lupul would be about the only other player for buyout. Don't see Laich or Greening bought out.
Lupul buyout: 4 years.
Cap hit:
16/17: 1.5 m
(Robidas 3 m cap hit gone)
17/18: 3 m
18/19: 1.5 m
19/20: 1.5 m (Lupul buyout end)
(Horton 5.3 cap hit gone)

Only Kessel 1.2 m remains.

Signing yourself up for $1.5m+ cap hits for the next 4 years doesn't make much sense.

If they are able to find a taker at 50% retained (potentially at this year's deadline), then the cap hit for 17-18 would be $2.6m versus $3m, while the actual salary owed would be under $2m.

Heck, if they just wait a year to do the buyout, the cap hit becomes $2.75m in 17/18 and $1.25m in 18/19. Realistically, the Leafs aren't going to spend to the cap this summer, so there's not much urgency to do it.

Likely something along the lines of:
Sosh-Kadri-Komarov
JvR-Nylander-Leivo
Lupul/Michalek-Bozak-Hyman
Laich-Holland-Marner
Greening and/or a UFA as a 13th forward.

Babcock has always been a guy who likes players to go to the AHL first, no reason why you can't do that with one of the Finns, or even, Matthews. Connor Brown has missed a ton of time this year due to injury. In all likelihood, I think he needs to start with the Marlies.

Would love to eventually see something like this up front

JVR - Stamkos - Marner
Laine - Nylander - Kapanen
Komarov - Kadri - Soshnikov
Leivo - Holland - Hyman

But there's a good amount of chicken-counting going on there.

funny how tsn omitted marner..whos way to good to benefit from another year in the ohl..outta the recent callups hyman and sosh are locks in my book unless they do a complete 180 in camp next year...nylander looks good but i feel like hes still unsure since he got his bell rung..there are plays esp in the neutral zone he looks hesitant...

in short we have a ton of forward depth..not so much on D i think we need 1 more vet in there for stability so we dont do what edm did...as well i dont see bernier as our future guy...i could see trading bernier signing Reimer back he deserves the #1...im not 100% but im pretty certain the ufa goalie market isnt the best outside reimer and gibson

ps any one know what day we can officially sign zaitsev?

Still Lupul, Michalek, Greening and even Laich to get rid of.

We do have way too many wingers and D. Hopefully we can unload but it will be tough.

Only Kessel 1.2 m remains.

Yup or we could float Lupul out there at 50% cap retention and see what happens.

No offense, but your scenario is based on an unlikely chance of winning the draft, an unlikely signing of Stamkos and the most unrealistic trade I've seen on these boards.

Stick to reality instead.

well, they will carry 9 forwards at the very least

so your only looking at knocking 1 name off that list

if Hollands wants to much as a RFA, well that solves that or Brown,Laine start on the marlies.

Maybe your jaded?

but those two things are well grounded in reality.

they didn't omit Marner at all they had him as the 13th forward the pic in the OP was taken before they finished the roster. Bobby Mac said if they felt Marner wasn't completely ready, that they would spreed out his 9 games and maybe send him on a conditioning stint in the AHL(which I think can only be 14 days tho not sure), and therefore that would get them to the World Junior Camps and then after the WJC they could make up there mind on OHL/NHL.

I actually like this. It's not just a taste of the 9 least competitive games of the NHL season at the start of the season. It's several months of professional practice time at a level far beyond the OHL. If he's allowed to play in AHL games on a conditioning stint (this is news to me), those games would tremendously valuable as well.
