currently, how many more cuts do we have to make to get to a playable roster?

Assuming the Leafs go with a 14 forward-7 D roster, they have 9 forwards to cut, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies, which makes a total of 19.

In my opinion, this is how the roster should shape up:

JVR-Kadri-Boyes
Winnik-Bozak-Lupul
Komarov-Holland-Parenteau
Matthias-Spaling-Grabner

Extras: Arcobello, Panik

Cuts: Nylander, Clune, Frattin, Froese, Kapanen, Soshnikov, Brown, Carrick, Hyman

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Rielly-Polak
Hunwick-Robidas

Extra: Marincin or Percy, I haven't decided yet

Cuts: Loov, Fraser, Campbell, Granberg, Brennan, Harrington, Valiev

Goalies:
Reimer
Bernier

Percy shouldn't be the extra. If one doesn't believe he's good enough to be in the top 6 you send him down to play every game.

Interesting. I would have thought Grabner would have been on the first instead of Boyes but I guess they want to mix it up a bit . It looks like Harrington and Marincin have the inside track on D out of the kids.

Looks about right for now. Players that look bad right now:

1 Robidas
2 JVR
3 Bernier

Would love to see Reimer in net for the opener. Looks better that Bernier right now. I now it's only been 4 games.

We're running with 14 forwards, and the lines won't stay consistent for more than a few games at a time. Whenever someone underperforms or makes a big mistake, they get switched out for one of the forwards on reserve.

I like the look of the Number 1 line Babcock went with tonight in Buffalo

ahh well to me, that jvr bozak boyes line was horrible...wasn't it? and boyes did nothing

Yup, they looked awful turning the puck over all night. If that's our first line we are in deep trouble. Not the same line as last year. As bad as they were defensively last year, at least they provided some offense.

Komorov - Kadri - Lupul
JVR - Holland - Winnik
Matthias - Bozak - Arcobello
Grabner - Spaling - Panik

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Rielly - Robidas
Marincin - Polak
Hunwick

So far, I haven't been too impressed with many of our new players with maybe the exception of Matthias. At least guys like Winnik and Komorov will put in a good effort and help their linemates, so I put them higher up in the lineup. I think Nylander and Percy would really improve the team, but I suspect that they'll be playing for the Marlies this year, so I didn't include them. I have also found Bozak and JVR to be unimpressive, so maybe splitting them up and putting them further down the lineup will help.

With all due respect, the only combo you're probably right on is Marincin-Polak. All of those forward combos are highly unlikely

I wasn't trying to guess the correct starting day line-up... I was putting together what I thought would be the best line combos given what I've seen so far.

I think based on the preseason lineups it's pretty obvious what the regular season lineup will look like:

JVR - Bozak - Boyes
Matthias - Kadri - Lupul
Komarov - Holland - Grabner
Winnik - Spaling - Parenteau
Panik, Arcobello

Hunwick - Phaneuf
Reilly - Gardiner
Harrington or Marincin - Polak
Robidas

Bernier
Reimer

I would expect Arcobello, Spaling, Parenteau, Reimer and Boyes to be traded by deadline and possibly Matthias and Polak as well. But if the latter two have decent seasons the Leafs may opt to resign them (Matthias and Polak). I'm sure if the Leafs receive a decent offer for Bozak or find someone interested in Robidas, they'll both be gone as well.

Needless to say, this team will look much different by the end of the season.

Nylander and Brown will likely get 15-20 games at the end of the year.

This is what I had barring any moves start of Sept.
JVR Bozak Kapanen
Winnik Kadri Lupul
Matthias Holland PAP
Komarov Spalling Panik
Beck Arcobello

Rielly Phaneuf
Gardiner Polak
Harrington Robidas
Hunwick Percy

Bernier
Reimer

A couple of moves (Grabner, Boyes) really has changed things and this is my new guess.

JVR Bozak Boyes
Matthias Kadri Lupul
Winnik Holland Grabner
Komarov Spalling PAP
Panik, Arcobello

Hunwick Phaneuf
Gardiner Reilly
Harrington Polak
Robidas Percy or Marincin depending on how many minutes they want Percy to play

Bernier
Reimer

What I'd (realistically) like to see the lines look like on opening night, also assuming they don't keep any of the kids:

JVR-Kadri-Lupul
Matthias-Bozak-Grabner
Winnik-Holland-Boyes
Komarov-Spaling-Parenteau
Ex. Arcobello and Panik

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Hunwick-Rielly
Marincin-Polak
Ex. Robidas

This sadly will be the opening night lineup.
