Looked for the old thread with no luck

September is getting near!! Training camp starts mid-September, ~24 days away!! Hockey news is going to soon be trickling in!

What we know:
- Management WILL install a strong work ethic among our players... if they're not giving an honest effort, they will not play.
- We have more than 23 NHL caliber players fighting for 23 spots

What is likely:
- Mike Babcock will develop some favourites after training camp
- At least one or two surprises should crack the roster (IE: Kozoun and Percy in 2014, Raymond off of PTO in 2013)

Players fighting for a roster spot:

Opening Night:

Hunwick - Marincin
Robidas

At this point it's basically a guess. Nylander might get a few games to start, in which case he'd start with third line minutes with Holland and Panik. Babcock seems to like guys like Winnik who are competent passers and steady at puck retrieval. The second line worries me the most since although it's filled with capable goal scorers, they'll be garbage along the walls. I really like the third line though. I think they'll play solid Babcock hockey and add the occasional big goal. The D is also pretty scary, since I don't think most of these d-men will complement each other. Unfortunately I don't see Percy beating out any of these guys at the moment, unless Marincin becomes the new whipping boy and plays himself into Babcock's doghouse.

I feel like at least one prospect will show up and really make the team, both Brown, Nylander and Leipsic have a chance to be that guy with their progression.

hoping some prospects at least get the 9 game stint.

*NOTES*
The top 6 I designed so that there was a guy that has some size and can do the dirty work (Matthias and JVR), the playmaking center (Kadri and Bozak) and finally the sniper (Lupul and Parenteau). It's the style I generally expect going forward from now on.

The third line and fourth line are somewhat the same. They will likely be able to produce similar offense and play a similar amount of time. However, the 4th line consists of players that will be used on PK and shutdown, whereas the 3rd line will likely be used more in normal 5-on-5 play (and maybe some PP).

Top pairing is Phaneuf and Gardiner. They will be able to compliment each other's styles well and should make each other look good. That's about it.

2nd pairing is Rielly and Robidas. Pretty much the same thing, except Robidas won't be able to facilitate Rielly's offense as well as Phaneuf will for Gardiner, but that's not a problem. Rielly is dynamic enough on his own to handle it.

3rd pairing is one of Marincin or Hunwick and Polak. Hunwick and Polak would work far better together because Hunwick does possess the puck well whereas Polak would rather separate the puck from other people. In that sense, they compliment each other well. In pure defensive situations, Marincin and Polak would also work well, but Hunwick and Polak seems to make the most sense on paper.

Reimer should hopefully play quite a bit in the stretch he is here so we can market him for the TDL. I expect Bernier to play more, but Reimer should get closer to 50% than usual. Bernier can more or less play the entire time after the TDL after all.

PP will consist of a mix of player in the top 9. What will happen, I'm not entirely sure. The 1st PP will likely be the same as the 1st line. I'd expect Bozak and Parenteau to be on the 2nd PP, but perhaps Holland instead of Matthias. Top 4 remains the same. Gardiner with Phaneuf, Rielly with Robidas. I'd want to spread the wealth instead of putting Gardiner with Rielly.

1st PK I expect Spaling to center Matthias with Gardiner and Polak. 2nd PK I expect Winnik to center whomever else wins (Komarov, Kadri, Bozak, Arcobello or Holland really) with Phaneuf and Robidas.

This is how I think they'll start. I expect them to roll 4 lines and not really have a true #1 and #2 line

JVR-Kadr-Komarov
Spaling-Matthias-Winnik
Arcobello-Holland-Panik
Beck, Bailey

Phaneuf-Gardiner
Rielly-Polak
Robidas-Hunwick

A guy who scored more goals than PAP is not in your lineup?
I think Panik will be counted on more this season.

I'm going to get hate for it, but I don't see Kadri as the #1 C coming out of training camp - Bozak, imo, will be given the opportunity to keep it. Babcock is known for having favorites with "unskilled" players. I'm not saying Kadri isn't the most skilled C, or that he won't get it by seasons end.

I don't see Panik as playing in the top 9. When he played on the 4th line with limited minutes, he managed to score quite a few goals. I don't feel that he played very well when he was given a bigger role.

But I guess he's still young, so he can still improve and put everything together.

I doubt Lupul will be moving to RW. He hates the right side.

That's why they brought in Parenteau and are looking at Setoguchi.
