Smith and Legwand are guys that could get shipped. Someone would take them imo. There's money for Condra, no reason to let him go

I'll be ****ing furious if they let Condra go and can't find a way to unload Greening or Smith.

Same. I think it'll happen though. But I REALLY hope not.

2 years 2.25 mill should do it id think, and if it would it be stupid not to

As much as it concerns me that guys like Greening and Legwand can handcuff our ability to sign zibanejad, hoffman, and stone to decent extensions, i do think it could be a blessing in disguise. Just look at Boston with Smith and ourselves with Cowen, longish extensions can really bite

I'm a huge fan of short bridge contracts. Do it for Stone, Zib, Pageau, and Chiasson.

Give Hoffman 4 years

Turris was a bargain.

Mtl gave a short bridge to PK and it costs them a fortune the following year.

Turris was a bargain. Greening and Cowen are dragging us down.
I would rather pay Turris fair money rather than underpay him and overpay underachievers.

With Hoffman, Stone, Zibanejad and Condra needing new contracts. With how much wasted money we have, I'm quite concerned. Especially considering its going to be extremely hard to dump our junk.

Excuse the analogy, but when it's 3am and they turn the lights on, there is always somewhere to dump your junk.

Cap will be near 70 mil probably. Condra doesnt have to be back. I think its unlikely we sign all Hoffman, Stone and Zibanjad to long term contracts. A few guys will have to get bridge deals and considering hoffman is closest to UFA status and will need the most UFA year boughti assume he'll get something longisht or one year

Condra gone saves 1.5 mil

Stone= 2-3 mil
hoffman =4x4
Pageau = 1.5
Chiasson 1.1
Zibanejad 2-3

Team will be near the cap. People hve been saying it for awhile but people think its impossible because "budget" theres also a chance we move Lehner or Cowen to save money/gets value players to replace their roles

As much as i like condra, there's no room. We have 12 million to sign hoffman,stone, zibanejad and pageau(you left him out) They will average less than 3 million im sure. We should be fine. That being said, i doubt we go after any UFAs unless we clear room.

Greening will be bought out which helps a little. Phillips will retire too which helps. 2 of Legwand, Wiercioch, and Gryba will be gone this summer.

Phillips retiring doesnt help. It just gives melnyk more actual money to play with. We still eat Phillips cap hit

I'm not too worried. We could sell them on bridge contracts if we absolutely have to.

Legwand has 1 year left
Greening 2
Smith 2
Phillips 1
Neil 2

Hell - even Michalek - some might say our "worst" contract is 3 more years, right?

And then we have Cowen/Wiercioch - ~$5 million tied up in them. They're both still fairly young. Murray could dump both of them if willing. He obviously wants something in return for either one that he wasn't offered at the deadline... but if the space is really needed. What team wouldn't bet on either one of them for a cheap, cheap price?

Will Melnyk be willing to eat Greening's contract and spend to or close to the cap? Those are the main questions.

I'd like to see if we can trade Greening's bad contract for an equally bad contract on the blueline.

Defencemen are easier to move at the deadline, it could buy us a year's worth of relief on that contract.

Also:
- Legwand's contract is tradeable
- Smith's contract is tradeable
- Michalek's contract is tradeable after his huge PPG stretch run after the deadline, assuming that is something we want to do
- Neil's contract is tradeable, if we can convince him to waive in the offseason (and I think being a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs might be enough of an incentive to get him to consider it)

The offseason is the best time to unload contracts - teams have as much open cap space as they will have all year, it's easier to move iffy contracts.

I totally think Greening is done. Melnyk was willing to have his NHL dollars sitting in the AHL. Why not just buy him out?

We have over 14 million committed to players who don't even play.
That is absolutely terrible 14!!!!!! And we are a budget team who "spends wisely". Like wtf.
That's just money where we are like "here. Take it. ".

I pulled some recent RFA signings to see what could be comparable for some of our guys, and this is what I have found:

Stepan (23 yrs old)- 57 pts: 3.85M/1YR
Johansen (20 yrs old)- 63 pts: 4M/3YR
Zuccarello (25 yrs old)- 59 pts: 3.5M/1YR
Schwartz (21 yrs old)- 56 pts: 2.35M/2YR
Brassard (25 yrs old)- 45 pts: 5M/5YR
Eakin (23 yrs old)- 35 pts: 1.9M/2YR

So in comparison with our UFA:
Stone=Johansen (-)
Zibanejad=Schwartz (-)
Hoffman= Zuccarello (-)

Pageau will likely get a 2 year deal, worth just under 1.5M, and I doubt Chiasson plays another game for the Sens.

My best guess for each contract:

Stone 3 years/3.5M per
Zibanejad 2 years/2.2M per
Hoffman 1 year/3M

This keeps them all RFA when there deals are up, and will give us time to get Greening/Legwand/Phillips/Neil/Cowen's contracts off the books.

And then not to mention the big money given to players who probably should even be playing. And who shouldn't be playing for us next year. (No. I'm not talking about bobby ryan).
Legwand Michalek gryba boro. These guys are taking up a HUGE chunk of our cap. That. Added to cowen smith Neil Phillips greening. Damn. That's a lot of money. Quite literally going to absolutely nothing.

All of whom helped reach the cap floor and will likely be gone in a year or so :nod:

Idk... doesnt bother me. The players played when they got their contracts.

Phillips, Neil and Legwand have one year left.. Do we really want to complain about having salary tied up in them for one year?

Only one i hate is Cowen's because it was totally undeserved and based on no evidence he was going to be good.

lol ya you can even argue these contracts helped us reach the floor this year...Not worth getting upset about one year that looks like the cap was slightly mismanaged

Gryba and Boro are not worth complaining about Boro. Boro makes less then he should based on how hes played. Gryba makes the correct amount of money. Were talking about a few hundred 1ooo dollars with Gryba and Boro

I bet Michalek and Cowen could each be moved for mid-late round picks. The question is whether whoever's running the show is smart enough/willing to do it.
