I was really excited when the Rangers drafted Iverson. I thought he would go a little later, but I thought it was a good pick at that spot. However, I agree with nyr2k2 that his development hasn't been strong since he was drafted. There have been some setbacks such as injuries and suspensions, as well as the fact that he's had problems breaking into what have been strong Portland teams to date, but he looks very much the same player I saw as a 17 year old.

Not going to write him off, but it's looking a bit bleak for him.

I liked the pick too, I think they were hoping for a Raffi Torres that played the just this side of the line rather than always going over it. In any case, he has seemed to stagnate. You never know though might still end up a good energy fourth liner.

Iverson certainly could end up as a contributor on the fourth line. I'm not advocating that we just walk away from him entirely; I just think he could likely be had on an AHL deal. If it took an ELC to get him signed, I'd have to wait and see what other FA's, picks, UDFA's and European free agents we signed and what our contract situation looked like before I'd be willing to commit to that.

sorry if i missed it -
has Huska committed to a NCAA program?

as i recall, an interview posted months back indicated that was his intention

If he has in fact committed, that commitment has not yet been made public.

How high of a level is the USHL? Would the best goalie in the USHL be ready for the AHL? What about the ECHL? Or would that mean he's headed to the CHL if not pro hockey?

The USHL is the highest level of junior hockey in the US, so it's the American equivalent of the CHL. However, the league is significantly smaller and doesn't possess nearly the talent pool of the CHL leagues.

It's tough to project goalies. It's entirely possible he could be ready to start his professional career, but I think he's more likely to spend a few years in college.

This should come with the caveat that in the US, the top teens go to US college (or to the Canadian Juniors), and the USHL is really for the second-tier of American boys. In Canada, it's the reverse: the top kids go to the CHL, while the second-tier goes to Canadian colleges. When it comes to the actual level of hockey, NCAA=CHL and Canadian Colleges = USHL.

I don't think that's accurate, either. If it were accurate, you'd still expect to be seeing guys drafted out of CIS (Canadian College). In reality, CIS is where failed CHL prospects go to give it one last go, and many CIS guys have already exhausted draft eligibility. Conversely, the USHL produces high picks every year and probably in the range of 30-50 picks each draft. I don't think it's at all accurate to say that the top teens eschew the USHL for NCAA, particularly given the USHL serves a younger age group than NCAA hockey. Players may use the USHL as a stepping stone to their college careers, but there are absolutely top-tier teenagers in the USHL that are just too young to be anywhere else. No one uses CIS as a stepping stone; it's a wasteland in terms of NHL prospects.

It's also worth noting that much like the CHL, the USHL isn't just for domestic kids. It's filled with guys from all over the world.

If you want to draw a true equivalency between the US and Canada, the USHL is more akin to Canadian Junior A (something like the BCHL), where guys, even high-end ones, go to develop for a few seasons before taking the jump.

If anyone was curious what became of Shesterkin after his VHL season ended, he's now down in the MHL (Minor Hockey League). He's 1-1 thus far and will probably play the rest of the MHL season and playoffs.

There still will be VHL play-offs (starting this week), I think he'll play there.

Edit: I can see that Shestyorkin is currently SKA backup in KHL play-offs, so they didn't sent him down yet. Those MHL 2 games he played were back in January.

I was wondering why they'd waste his time in the MHL...

Shesterkin is better off practicing in the KHL and watching what it takes to win in pro playoffs than hanging out with children.

Thanks for clarifying. I was looking for him and just noticed some MHL games that he played in that I hadn't noticed before.

Saarela had a pretty bad game today offensively, no points, couldn't get any shots to go and had a woeful shoot-out attempt, although his bad games are still pretty effective. His PK'ing was very good and he's excellent on the forecheck almost every game I've seen.

He literally dropped from 6 to 10 in my prospect ranking after todays game for me.

I hadn't watched him play in a few weeks, so I thought this was a good time to watch, as he was playing Laine's team. Saarela's their work-horse though, plays all the tough minutes, 2nd PP, 1st PK, double-shifted at the end of regulation, out at start of OT, first player in the shoot-out.

You should have chosen your game better. :sarcasm:

They play today again and Saarela has one primary assist after two. :)
