a virtanen - gauthier - ritchie line... dear lord why are these guys even playing for team canada? oh right because theyre either high draft picks or got picked by a canadian team.

****ing politics, im so tired of this **** honestly

It's sad of you truly believe this. Why would hockey canada give a **** about who drafted these prospects. Hockey Canada sent 4 canadian team players (of the 4 there was 2 goalies and their 7th D) to the Olympics, I don't see why they would have more bias for the WJC

also extremely overrated, although hes not as bad as that no offense/no hockey IQ line. theyre just 3 mongrels that run around the ice aimlessly, no talent or hockey smarts whatsoever.

Gauthier is probably the smartest defensive player in juniors. Hockey smarts does not mean scoring a lot.

Having a "team strategy" and then picking the players you believe best fits that strategy has proven over and over again to be ineffective at the junior level. These are incomplete, still developing, flawed hockey players we are talking about..

You pick the best players 23 players (for some stupid reason Canada only picks 22)and then build a strategy for the players at your disposal that best suits their particular skill set and then, let it all hang out from there... if we lose, we lose.. no big deal. but expecting 18 and 19 year olds to be defensive aficionados and the key to winning or losing???? not at this level. I'd rather go down with my 23 best players on the ice... not 17 of my best players and 6 who are there to play a specific role.

22 Players is more than enough to run with, we're talking about guys who are used to playing half a game with their Club Teams, but will end up playing half that or less with Team Canada. More guys isn't always better.

And this leaves them flexibility in replacing a guy if they need to (injury or suspension) with a plug-n-play "role" replacement as needed, if say...something happens in a pre-tournament game on Sunday. You can tack on a 23rd guy who fits the "role" you need to replace. If you're "replacing" say McDavid if his hand isn't right...you'd probably want a different player than if you're "replacing" Freddy Gauthier and his purported "defensive specialist" role. This tournament is in Toronto-Montreal...you've got the vast majority of your talent pool a few hour plane hop away if you need them.

Or...if that even ends up being a line when it's all said and done...

Maybe, just maybe...it's because those awful plugs Virtanen and Ritchie combined for the exact same number of goals last year as our much vaunted top winger duo of Domi+Duclair? :dunno:

As far as Gauthier goes though, you'll find no argument here. Though we all know the reasons why he's on the team.

you haven't been paying attention, this is not the Senior men's WHC where you can add up to 25 players in tournament. Here the roster is set on the 25th..once you do that, then there are no more additions. The 23rd roster spot is a goaltender. 20 skaters and 3 goaltenders. Canada has named its 20 skaters + 2 goaltenders, ergo no flexibility to replace a guy as needed once they officially declare their roster on the 25th.

let's take our weakest link and further weaken it by limiting our options. Ya, Hockey Canada is smart. Good grief.

Because he played better than the players cut? He wins draws, drives possession, physical, is great down low, great on the pk, ect..

The hate that some players get because of who drafted them is absolutely ridiculous. Gauthier and Virtanen are already the reason we've lost this tournament and we haven't even started yet.

Ritchie over MDC is ridiculous. Gauthier making the team and MDC is also, ridiculous.

Just roll 4 scoring lines. Gauthier isn't a part of that type of team IMO.

Team Canada's designated 4 line system has been flawed for years at the junior level. At a best on best tournament, you don't bring role players. You use your best players, identify those among them that have great two way play, and get them to take on a role they normally wouldn't for their club team.

At the Olympics, we use Toews and Bergeron to shut teams down. Rick Nash gets used similarly to grind opponents down. Because we have players like this, that are capable of playing D while still be highly skilled and able to score, it allows to bring more skilled players.

Last year, Canada's grinding line with Gauthier, Anderson and Leier was terrible. How much better could that squad have been if Team Canada had followed what the Olympic team does and cast Horvat and Lazar in two way grinding line roles...and brought 3 talented players to form another scoring line rather than the 3 I mentioned.

For a nation that is as deep in prospects at this age level as we are, we don't use that to our advantage. Bringing 4 top lines of players (with guys like Lazar cast to check) would have the other teams worrying about defending against us rather than us hoping our top two lines can click and provide enough offense for the team.

Every line on this team is more than capable of scoring... Personally I would've had dallcolle on the team and crouse off. MDC and Gauthier were playing for different positions on the team so I don't know why you're even making a connection between the two..

Yes. That is why he is there, though the underlined is very debatable.

Team Canada wanted a big strong, faceoff taking, PK specializing, grind it out and cycle the puck below the goal line type Center...and Gauthier outplayed any "competition" he had for that role.

I don't know what all the griping is about. From what I've seen the forwards that were cut showed next to nothing. I don't care what they did on their junior teams. As for the defencemen it was a toss up. I really didn't see any major talent drop off.

What worries me is our goaltending. I'm a Habs fan but someone better tell Fucale to trade in his table tennis paddle for a goalie mitt. Either that or have Comrie as your #1 and I haven't seen enough of Comrie to calm my nerves.

From what I've seen so far the Canadian forwards and defencemen are the best of the tournament. That d-corps is one of the most mobile group I've ever seen. But Groulx better solve that problem in nets or we'll be continuing our medal less streak. And if he doesn't solve it then going with MDC or Fleury or Dickinson won't make a difference

Not everyone stands out after 1 game though, they could have waited longer to make these cuts. Not like they still had 30 kids like Russia in camp.

As for Gauthier making the team, I hope this is not a repeat of the Turin model.

I am a believer you never leave offence off a roster. I hope Canada does not run into a situation of needing offence in an elimination game.

The Sochi Olympic Team showed we could play a defensive system with Offensive players. Never leave offence behind. We will see if this comes back to bite us.

Agreed, I think fleury played ok and he is an awesome skater.

However for a year after going in the top 10 of the draft he has had a really up and down season.

Fleury has been a healthy scratch for the rebels a few times this season already.

That is what Ray Ferraro tells you look it up Fleury has not ever been a healthy scratch this year or

or last.

From what I saw (outside of fleury) the guys on the team had the best games last night. I'm pumped for this to start, and do believe canada wins gold this year. Team has a great balance of offence and defence.

Only question is goaltending.

That's what I don't get. Why does Canada need defensive specialists when they've got plenty of highly skilled forwards who can play D just as well. What's the point of bringing Gauthier when you've got guys like Reinhart, Lazar, Horvat, etc.?

He's not just a defensive specialist, he plays a lot better during the camp than all the players that were cut yesterday...it's simple

Domi - Reinhart - Duclair
Lazar - McDavid - Virtanen
Fabbri - Petan - Point
Ritchie - Paul - Crouse
Gauthier

Morrissey - Bowey
Nurse - Theodore
Morin - Hicketts
Heatherington

Comrie
Fucale

This is the exact Line up that Canada Needs to win 3 scoring lines with a two way 4th

Paul will provide stability to the fourth line. Fabbri Point Petan could be a crazy line I know the reaction will be they are two small but all three are relentless on the puck and together could form Canada Most skilled line. McDavid will do his thing with Lazar,Virtanen not as skilled but he is a one shot scorer. Rhinos line we saw last night .
Canada should look at this make up for lines. Canada will start Rolling lots of tentative play last night from bubble guys depth will be the difference for this team.

If you watched last nights game you would agree that Gauthier did drive posession. He was much better than Mdc and the others that were cut. His line was consistantly in Russias end. I was expecting him to be strong in his own end but his line was hardly ever there.

Doesn't look bad except the 4th line doesn't make me feel good at all maybe switch Point for Ritchie and pray Ritchie does something.

You guys may think I am crazy but I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Hicketts got an "A"... He has been a leader at every level he has played at. Currently captain of his WHL team at 18 years old in Victoria, wore an "A" at the U-18 Ivan Hlinka and also named captain of that 2012 Team Canada Youth Olympic Games. He was also named captain of his Team Pacific at the World Under 17's.

With the amount of leaders on this World Junior team, they could name almost anybody the captains, but like I said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Hicketts got a letter.

He is going to turn into a fan favorite throughout the tourney amongst Canadians that haven't seen him play.. A little guy that doesn't play little and makes big guys look silly. I am making a prediction and say he will turn into a top 4 dman on Canada by the end of the tournament.

DC looked bad last night plain and simple. Some players have to be " the guy " on there team i think thats what we are seeing hear. Pretty sure they played 3 games this week not just the one last night.

Every year.. once the intensity gets turned up. Canada starts looking slow and we get exposed by teams that skate better than us.

Gauthier is brutal off the rush.. least he was last year.
Looks great in slow exhibition games.

But once we run into the intense games he folded like a cheap tent.
