Would we be better having Malone on this team or a player better than Malone?

A player better than Malone.

BUT

IF MALONE MAKES THE TEAM

He was obviously the best option in camp and therefore the best player available.

But actually, his signing is low-risk and team friendly, and if he can utilize his size in the proper role there's no real downside to the contract.

Would we be better having Malone on this team or a player better than Malone?

One team's best player is another team's worst.

Would we be better having Stepan on this team or Crosby, a better player then Stepan?

Would we be better having Jt Miller on this team or Adam Henrique, a better player then Miller?

Should I keep going?

I have been trying to make an opening night, injury free, cap compliant roster with cap geek.

But unless I waive at least one of these players they just signed, Lombardi, Malone, Glass or Kostka, I am having trouble fitting in two prospects under the cap unless I use a less expensive prospect like Lindberg and even then I'm not sure that leaves them enough wiggle room.

Is Miller one of your two prospects?

With Miller already on the roster, Lombardi, Malone, Glass, Kostka AND two prospects aren't making the team.

Let me put it this way. If your roster is more than 13 forwards, 8 D and 2 goalies, you have more players than the Rangers will have opening night. Chances are pretty high that it will be 7 defensemen and not 8 too.

Yes Miller is there, and Kostka is the 7th with no 8th.

But that is the issue in my opinion, in order to have two prospects make the team, regardless if it's Miller-Hayes or Hayes-Lindberg, they are probably going to have to waive someone they just signed to carry also the wiggle room they need, and I find that unlikely.

So is this really a chance for more than one prospect to make the team, or is this a fight between all the prospects for the one spot available?

Saying that Glass wont make the team is just silly. He's a 1.45 million guy who signed 3 years, he's already on the team and will be one of the final 22. Don't believe me? Ask the coach...

Lombardi and Malone are both on two-ways no?

So even if they had to, those guys can both play in the minors.

Pretty sure they still would have to be placed on waivers to be re-assigned?

Not that it matters much to me, I'd keep the best players on the NHL roster and go with it, but I'm not so sure I see the Rangers waiving players they just signed without at least seeing what they can do on the NHL roster. Something not to different than say Pyatt or maybe even Todd White although I don't remember how that played out except he was not very good and was on the roster.

Here's what I have.

Kreider - Step - Nash
Hayes - Brass - Zuccs
Hags - JT - MSL
Lombardi - Moore - Stemp
Malone and Fast

McD - G
Staal - DB
Moore - Klein
Kostka

Hank
Talbot

Total salary - $68.887 million

If Hayes is the odd man out, then insert Malone to the Brass - Zuccs line and the cap room reduces to 87k from 112k

Total salary - $68.912

I don't think any of our cheap vets are so good that a ready NHL prospect won't be able to outplay them. I consider Malone, Lombardi, and Glass as the three best bubble vet forwards we brought in. All three are vulnerable to being bumped by a ready kid.

Glass?

What I am trying to say, poorly I guess, if they do not waive any of Glass, Lombardi, Malone, and they keep Kostka as a 7th, they do not have room for two prospects who make over ~1.7M combined, probably less than that because they'll likely keep a little wiggle room in the couple hundred K area so they can build up cap space daily.

I am assuming those guys will not be waived, mostly because they just signed them and I'm not thinking they did that just to waive them as it would look kind of silly in retrospect.(not that it won't come to that, just initially on opening night)

So I think there is room for one prospect to make the team out of camp when I combine who would have to go through waivers and what the cap space is.

So I'm thinking not only would a 2nd prospect have to beat out one of those players for opening night, they'd have to beat them out to the point the Rangers would be willing to waive someone they just signed.

Does not mean they won't waive someone I'm just thinking it will be interesting to see, like if two prospects look to be better than who they'd have to waive, will they bite the bullet so to speak or will they just go with whom they'd have to waive otherwise.

Like will they think, no one is plucking Glass/Lombardi/Malone, so it's safe to waive him so we can fit two of Miller/Hayes/Fast/Lindberg/etc on the opening night roster since they outplayed him.

Concur.

The other thing I'm not crazy about with this Malone signing is IF for some unexplained reason somebody good becomes available, whether via trade or otherwise, we have backed ourselves up vs the wall. When every prospect is Fast or better that's one thing. But Malone? On top of the indulgence of Glass?

Hopefully from a head count standpoint it just means moving a St. Croix; from a $ standpoint might be a tad more buttons to press simultaneously.

Competition is good.. if malone signed it only means hes showed he can still play.. NOT the same role but a role within bottom 6.. I believe the lindbergs, fast, kristos allens McIrath of the world will be first call ups, and get another year of seasoning in AHL..

Hayes spot to win over Malone but he has to prove himself.. I believe Malone is an insurance policy if Hayes cant win the job.. It should be an awesome camp for jobs
