Good **** that's a horrible trade

Really? One of the top PP QB's in the NHL (He was 15th in Norris trophy voting despite an off year) whose locked up, and a center (21 years so he's under control for years at a reasonable rate) who instantly become your 3C with a chance to develop into a great 2C... For Kreider (potential, potential, potential) and MDZ - a solid top 4 D, but let's not pretend he's going against the opposite teams top forwards or QBing a good PP... The team is instantly better, and better in the long run...

Brooklyn, of course
That's where my MDZ/Kreider+ for Byfuglien/Burmistrov deal comes in... two birds (PP QB/3C), one stone.

I don't think the Ranger organization is interested in trading Kreider--it's pretty clear that Sather and Co. think very highly of him. With a new coach coming in--one who has a system that is more compatible to the type of player Kreider is--it's even more unlikely.

I also have my doubts that the organization is as hot to trade Del Zotto as some posters here.

Buff weighs about 1000 pounds and Burmistrov is exactly how you described Kreider, except Kreider is humongous and skates like the wind. This is a deal that the Rangers would never make, no question whatsoever.

And MDZ plays with little offensive IQ and Kreider has rocks for brains. You can spin it either way.

I'd love to get Briere here even on a two year deal. Have guys like St. Croix and Fast spend training camp with him and just soak up information such as what to eat and how to prepare for a game.

That would require buying out Richards though.

Would we use Briere as the 3C or a Top-6 W? Awesome in the playoffs. Don't see it happening but never say never with Slats. Would be such a NYR FA signing; no more than 2 years.

Briere at under 3 million is a steal. He wants to stay in the Atlantic area, he's still got his children that his ex-wife doesn't have custody of that he wont leave behind, so he wants to stay around here ala NJ, or NY, which is why he wouldn't accept a trade. Excellent playoff performer, great leader, and just a great proven point producer. He's a little old but he'd be an excellent acquisition.

We sign Briere at 3 M per at short term
Philly signs Brad Richards for the same
Book it

Otoh, I am intrigued by the possibility of a Vinny L buyout...

oh boy if Vinny is bought out I'd say we pounce. Short term deal, 2 year 9 mill maybe? Good on faceoffs, REALLY good on the powerplay, a leader, not afraid to hit, overall good player, wouldn't mind him at all.

he will finally go to Montreal :sarcasm: id take him but no more than 5 mil per year 3 years at most.. no reason to tie up a long term long contract.. he would add size down the middle and actually uses it at times.. id take Vinny over Briere any time asked.

would have a quite chuckle if we replaced B Rich with VL. Maybe we can go after MSL next and complete the set

Sather is a stubborn old man. If he thinks Richards just had a bad year and will rebound, he'll keep him. Doubt he really wants to go into the season with only 3 "proven" centers. The organization got burned last year thinking Kreider would be ready to produce decent numbers in a significant role, doubt they want to leave the center position to either Miller (who was very raw) or Lindberg (who will face a learning curve coming from the SEL). It's easier than hunting in the free agent market and cheaper than having to give up assets in a trade.

There is huge risk keeping Richards.

All it takes is that he has something that needs to be taken care of after the season, he we will not be able to buy him out...

Just buy Richards out. Richards was a Torts player. Torts is gone. New coach, new era. I'm not advocating a scorched earth policy, but to think that keeping Richards for one season when he'd be bought out in 2014 anyway in hopes he can rebound is astoundingly stupid. The only way I see that happening is if the brass thinks the Rangers can win the Cup next season with Richards on the roster.

My opinion? I don't think so. The Penguins and Bruins are the teams to beat in the East. Both would annihilate the Rangers in a 7 game series. The stars aligned in 2012 when the Flyers and Caps took them out for us, and they still couldn't get past a hot Devils team in the ECF.

Say goodbye to Richards and platoon Miller, Lindberg, and Boyle as the 3rd line center. Go out and get someone like Boyd Gordon for cheap and improve the PK and faceoff wins on defensive starts, since AV likes to line match. Explore Briere if he comes cheap, no to Vinny L.

Clowe's concussions are worrisome. Concussions are a tricky animal. Patrice Bergeron has been one of the best players for Boston and has had multiple concussions in the past. Crosby has had at least two. Bring him back for a year or two year deal and let him play for his retirement contract.

Will center Danny Briere’s spot in the Flyers’ lineup be replaced by Brad Richards?

The Flyers plan to buy out Briere, who has a $6.5 million cap hit and two years left on his deal. A club source said the Flyers would “absolutely†be interested in Richards if the Rangers use a buyout to get his annual $6.67 cap hit off the books.

Richards’ contract runs through 2019-20. But he would become an unrestricted free agent and be able to sign a new deal if the Rangers buy him out.

Briere, one of the NHL’s greatest playoff performers, has been slowed by injuries the last two seasons. When healthy, he is still a dangerous offensive player. In fact, it wouldn’t be shocking if the offensive-challenged Rangers pursued him when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 5.

Briere, who will turn 36 in October, lives in Haddonfield and wants to stay close to the area to be with his three boys.

Newell Brown who sounds like he will be joining AV in NY. Brooks wrote about a comment made by Brown regarding the PP

Brown, whose primary responsibility was the power play, enjoyed great success his first season with the team in 2010-11. The power play was No. 1 in the NHL and so were the Canucks, who won the first of two straight Presidents’ Trophies. In 2011-12, the power play slipped to fourth and then plummeted to 22nd this past season. At one point, it went 11 straight games without producing a single goal.

Brown knew things weren't right when he had too many left shots.

“You have to look at the pieces of the puzzle that are necessary and we had great chemistry that first year,†he explained. “Everything gelled. This year, we were forced through injury and whatnot and changes in personnel to try and build a new group.

“When you're trying to run a power play with five left shots, which we were forced to do a lot this year, you're really swimming upstream. Seventy-seven per cent of the power-play goals are scored with at least two right shots, so that tells you a lot right there. Not to say there are exceptions to the rule, but when you have five left shots, or even four, your chances of scoring are diminished.

“Teams are so fast to get into the shot lanes these days,†Brown continued, “that if you can't take one-timers, if you aren't in position to take one-touch passes and move the puck quickly to shooters and shoot off the pass, you're at a big disadvantage. That was something we were dealing with this year.â€

The Rangers have Stepan and Callahan. Girardi and Stralman. Briere is a righty. The Rangers are close to his 3 boys in south Jersey. Briere and his wife are divorced. 35 plus contract. 1 year deal.

I've looked at future cap scenarios and we honestly need Stepan and McD to sign long term deals in the 5.5M region to have any chance of keeping this core together in the long run. And that is while getting contributions from Kreider/Miller/Lindberg/Fasth on their cheap ELC's and 2nd contracts.

These guys need new contracts starting 2014-15:

Lundqvist
Biron
Callahan
Brassard (Arb. RFA)
Boyle
Kreider (Non-arb? RFA)
Pyatt (Let go)
Powe (Let go)
Asham (Let go)
Girardi
Del Zotto (Arb. RFA)
Strålman
Moore (Non-arb? RFA)

The non-arb RFA get cheap bridge deals (Kreider 2x1.2M, Moore 2x1.3M)

If Brassard continues his strong form and scores 60-70p hell get ~4x5M. Points cost $$$.

Lundqvist gets ~8x8M. Some say 9+, others say 7, I think somewhere in between. I think he'll get slightly less, but it is better to take a higher number in a scenario.

Biron gets 2x1M. Getting up there, will take low $ to get a 2nd year.

Callahan gets 4x5.25M. I don't see how he comes cheaper, this contract will be bad by the end.

Girardi gets 4x5M. Hamhuis got 4.5M a few years ago, Girardi gets more.

Del Zotto gets 2x4M, he needs to prove himself before he gets a long deal.

Boyle gets 3x2M. Look at what Gaustad got.

Strålman gets 3x3.25M. Jonathan Ericsson comparable, solid UFA D's with upside get paid.

If McD and Step got 5.5, Hagelin 2.5, and Zucc 1.5 with the cap going up to 68M; that leaves us with 668k in cap space with 12F, 6D, 2G. Impossible, at least one more F and D is needed.

The season after that the following contracts expires:

Staal
Dorsett
Miller (Non-arb RFA)
Lindberg (Non-arb RFA)
Fasth (Non-arb RFA)

Signing anyone this summer to more than 1 year will force us to a tough decision. We basically cannot afford to keep Boyle regardless of what we do. Girardi and Callahan are borderline.

Honestly, a bridge deal for Stepan can dismantle this team. Imagine having to pay him 7.5M in a few years.

Briere is eligible for a performance bonus contract. Player 35 or older signing a 1 year SPC. A base salary plus performance bonuses. Games played, etc. Article 50 (C) Performance Bonuses. Pages 248-249 in the CBA. Brown likes right handed shots on PP. He can play in the middle and on the left side.

Fasth and Thomas are righty shots.

Of the rightys on the Rangers, Strålman is the only one who can one-time it properly. But he was hardly utilized in that role, Torts put him on the right side when he got to play on the PP.

An effective PP needs:

1 net guy, handedness irrelevant.

1 shooter.

1 pointman, same handedness as the shooter.

2 playmakers, opposite handedness of the shooter and pointman.

The Rangers optimal PP is either:

Net: Callahan
Shooter: Nash
PPQB: Del Zotto/McD/Moore/Brasard/Zuccarello
Low PM: Stepan
High PM: Strålman/Girardi

Needs a better RH playmaker up high.

2nd option, RH shot:

Net: Callahan
Shooter: Strålman
PPQB: Stepan
PMs: Brassard/Zuccarello/Del Zotto/Nash

Conclusion: Too few PP compatible RH shots on the roster.
