I don't see a deal being made for a first line winger this year. But if one was, trading Despres would be worth it. Even then, given Despres' value RIGHT NOW, he would not cut it. That said, you don't trade Despres for a 3rd liner, either. Niskanen + or Orpik can be used for that.

Stewart isn't a third liner. He's a guy whose strengths would be maximized here. And his potential is that of Neal. He's got the size and skillset. Give him an elite center and the production will be there.

We don't have the expendable assets to get a proven 40 goal scorer like Neal is right now. Whoever we bring in is going to have some warts in his game.

But I can understand if you'd rather keep Despres and use Orpik and/or Nisky for a lesser forward.

I'm just saying there are other options. Moving Despres, keeping Orpik for the rest of the year and slotting Maatta in his spot next season.

It's why I keep saying I'd rather see Shero go after someone like Clifford or Greening, to help the 3rd line out and go from there, in the off season, there are some interesting players available that Shero could go after if he is smart and either deals one of Nisky and Orpik or walks away from both to have a lot of cap space to use on improving all 4 lines on this team.

In no order (* beside the guys I would love for Shero to go after).

  • Marian Gaborik
  • Thomas Vanek*
  • Mike Cammalleri
  • Ales Hemsky
  • Milan Michalek (or not, maybe his bro will be like, dude Dan is a tard...don't, come to Phx!)
  • Ryan Callahan
  • Matt Moulson*
  • Nik Kulemin*

Next year...

Kunitz, Crosby, Vanek
Kulemin, Malkin, Neal
Bennett, Sutter, Dupuis
Megna, Vitale, Adams

Despres, Martin
Scuderi, Letang
Maatta, Bortuzzo

I'm guessing he'll call his brother to ask him how his time in Pittsburgh was and moments later inks a final contract with Phoenix.

Milan Michalek is younger than I thought. He turns 29 tomorrow. Although his production has been down the past couple years after that huge 35 goal season in 2011-12. I'd take him if the price were right. I think I'd pass otherwise. I just have a gut feeling we'd be underwhelmed and immediately be clamoring to find Sid yet another winger.

He's a guy who you don't realize how young he still is, and that he's 6'2 225. You'd think all that combined with his speed and shooting ability, he'd be a monster.

He's also somewhat fragile with his knee issues, not sure I want that on this team given how injury prone the Pens have become and I seriously think he signs with either the Wings, Hawks, or Phoenix.

I like Milan, but I don't see the Pens on his short list.

Also, damn, he's like a team worst -13.

The wheels are falling off Michalek right now. Maybe 5 years ago but he's done as an impact top 6'er. He's not getting 5M either...

If we have the money at the start of FA, I'd definitely approach Gaborik. A 1 year deal at 4-5 million is definitely something I'd do. I would start by approaching him, then if he fails, I'd go after Kulemin. That would make our top-6 either:

Kunitz-Crosby-Gaborik (**** in my pants)
Bennett-Malkin-Neal
or
Kunitz-Crosby-Bennett
Kulemin-Malkin-Neal

Actually, if Gaborik signs for $4.5 million and Kulemin for $3 million, we could still probably stay under the cap. With 12 F (assuming Sutter at $2.75, Vitale at .7 and Scrabbles at .65), 6 D (Despres at $1.5) and a goalie, we have $2.4 million in cap space.

Kinda what I'm thinking. Don't know Ottawas feelings about him though. He seems like a guy they would either resign...or don't resign for a glaring reason.

There's not a chance Gabby goes for that little. There's a team out there that will overpay for him. Don't think so? Couple words: Richards...Clarkson...Dupuis...

Dupuis in 2 seasons before contract: 130 games, 45 goals and 97 points (pace of 28 goals and 61 points per season with excellent defensive play)

Clarkson in 2 seasons before contract: 128 games, 45 goals and 70 points (pace of 29 goals and 45 points per season with a ton of grit)

Richards in 2 seasons before contract: 152 games, 52 goals and 168 points (pace of 28 goals and 91 points per season)

Gaborik in 2 seasons before contract: 64 games, 17 goals and 38 points (pace of 22 goals and 49 points with injury problems)

One of those players isn't like the others.

Someone will take a chance on Gaborik, I'm sure. I could definitely see him going to Europe though. I don't think he's going to like the offers he sees.

I wouldn't be surprised if that would happen. Not many teams are going to pay the price that he wants. Semin went unsigned for a long time, and he's a ton better than Gaborik.

Gabby with Crosby would be pretty lethal, but i'd not throw money at him. 5M or less, sure.
Def wouldn't want to overpay for long term with him, agreed, but the guy produces well enough considering he's the only legitimate offensive threat when he's on the ice a lot of the time, and defenses know that....plus his +/-'s over the years have been surprisingly good. We could afford up to 6M on him for like a 2 year deal to see if he works with Crosby, once we've unloaded some cap chaff (Orpik, Niskanen) especially if the cap goes up.

In my eyes, part of Shero's strategy behind having all these young, cheap NHL capable defensemen should be to save big $$$ on D and sign a legit top 6 winger for 5-7 mill.

Then why would we want him?

Because with Crosby, he would be incredible. He has great hands, great speed and an incredible shot. Not to mention he can create his own offense. He has struggled recently, which hurts his value. However, him with Sid would be incredible. They fit each other very well.

I think that if we can't get a bona-fide 1st line scoring line winger or a good 2nd/3rd line tweener with some size/grit, we'd be better off sticking with what we have rather than making a Hail Mary for a struggling vet and logjamming Bennett/Megna in the process.

I'd rather logjam one of them than risk DB going into panic mode when Beau makes a mistake and reuniting KCD for the rest of the season.

Shero has to come up with something by the deadline. This isnt' a contender unless he does.

Why in the hell are signing Michalek, guy has been so disappointing plus he's injury prone. If you want to go with that kind of player cough up an extra $1,000,000 for Gaborik instead. Or maybe even Alfie if he still wants to play, highly doubt he'd come here though or even Cammalleri

Dude Gaborik is going to get paid...it's not even worth considering. He'll likely get something similar to what Semin got.

What about last season's playoff run makes you think that acquiring a vet is going to stop this if DB is still married to it?
