Just a quick glance through.

The guys I think should be re-signed:

Matt Fraser
Lane MacDermid
Colton Sceviour
Kevin Connauton
Cameron Gaunce
Richard Bachman
Tyler Beskorowany
Travis Morin
Eric Nystrom
Jordie Benn
Maxime Fortunus
Carl Sneep/Tyler Sloan (Only one of these two)
Christopher Nilstrop

That'd put us right at 50 contracts, 48 w/o Faksa and Bystrom.

I really wish we could just dump King and Petersen.

Dallas has 37 players under contract. I think no brainer re-signs are Jordie Benn, Matt Fraser, Luke Gazdic, Lane MacDermid, Colton Sceviour, Kevin Connauton, Cameron Gaunce, Tyler Beskorownay, and Eric Nystrom.

That puts them 46 contracts. Because of the slide rule, only 44 count.

Then they have to decide on AHLers like Morin, Dowling, and Wrenn. IMO, they should sign Wrenn and Dowling.

That puts them at 46, and the only signing they have to make is a backup goalie (Bachman, Nilstorp, or I'd prefer the "Other" option). That takes them to 47 contracts.

I'm starting to wonder if we don't re-sign Besko. Obivously it's too soon to give up on him, but he really has no future in the organization. Lehtonen/Campbell will be the starters, and Bachman/Nilstrop (or a FA or something) will be our back-up.

With Kiviaho and Lagace around as well, there just doesn't seem to be much of a need for him. Ideally, we'd keep him, but if that were to mean losing Dowling or Wrenn, hell no.

I wouldn't use the compliance option on him, but theoretically you could buyout Tristan King. I know previously I shot that idea down for Petersen and Wathier because it doesn't make financial sense when you can just pay them their AHL salary rather than buying out their NHL contract.

The difference here is that young player (I forgot the exact age limit ... 25 probably) only receive 1/3 rather than the standard 2/3 of their salary spread over two years.

That means his buyout would cost approximately $175,000, but the annual hit would only be $87,500 for 2 years. I don't think he deserves that kind of reward, but if you can't dump him on someone, just bite the damn bullet.

They have to have an AHL backup, and Lagace isn't anywhere close to being ready. In fact, I'm counting now on him probably playing one more year in the QMJHL.

At this point, I think the Dallas Stars will go with 4 goalies under NHL contracts, and the Texas Stars, IMO, will likely sign Josh Robinson and Chris Rawlings to AHL contracts to play in the ECHL. They'd also serve as Texas' call up goalies when Dallas brings up Campbell.

So I'm guessing Robinson couldn't handle being an AHL back-up then?

Yeah I kinda feel bad for Besko, even though I know little to not much about his development. He must see the writing on the wall and know any chance of a lengthy NHL career is pretty much burned in Big D, given our goalie depth.

If there was any hint that we'd give him a look over one of Bachman or Nihlstorp, that would be enough to entice him to stick around, otherwise why continue to toil in the ECHL? Turning 23 this month so there's still time, at least.

I'm with you on this, and I think we're drafting a goalie in the 2nd round this summer.

The main reason I made this list, and I almost forgot to point this out, is to illustrate a major logjam at D in the NHL since I don't believe Dallas would have the stones to put Connauton or Gaunce on waivers. Just an FYI, Jordie Benn only has 2 years of waiver exemption so he will require waivers next season. That said, I don't believe they'd have any issues waiving him. It's doubtful someone would snatch him up.

Next year's NHL D though project to be:

Alex Goligoski
Trevor Daley
Stephane Robidas
Aaron Rome
Philip Larsen
Brenden Dillon
Kevin Connauton
Cameron Gaunce

Someone's got to go since I don't see them carrying 8.

I think one of Daley or Robi will be traded at the draft sir. Larsen just doesn't have a future with this team either. Morrow and KConn wrapped that up.

Not saying it's impossible, but there's no reason to cut the goalie depth so short.

Dallas has used 3 goalies this year, and so did Texas. Between the two obviously it was 4 goalies.

Robinson has been fine, but Beskorowany is still a legitimate prospect. He's very young for his age. In the tragic situation that Dallas has to use their 4th goalie ... and it could happen .... I think most people would probably feel more comfortable with Beskorowany. He might be younger, but he has 3 years of pro experience compared to 1 for Robinson.

I totally brain farted on the fact that Oleksiak and Nemeth could push for NHL time as well. Morrow might as well, but I could see them sticking with him in the AHL a little bit longer.

He and Connauton are so similar that based on age and waiver status, Morrow sort of gets pushed back likely. The same could be true of Gaunce and Nemeth. They're very similar. I think Nemeth and Morrow could have higher upside, but waiver status could keep them in the AHL an extra year.

I can see Morrow having another year in the A. KConn isn't going to develop defensively. He's just the player that he is, and you accept it. The guy can do what Goli did for Pitt, only better. Play as a 3rd pairing defenseman who rocks on the PP.

Man I can't wait to see that bomb in the NHL.

There are no better free agents. I haven't seen any better options what we could do but I like the depth. The best optio would be to fo out and move some of these d for an upgrade at the draft.

I think GM Joe's direction is cloudy at times, but the most common theme is getting bigger and tougher to play against.

More often than not, those are the forwards they target. Plus, this is just an educated guess, Boston was shopping the little Russian center hard. I had significant doubts Dallas would be interested, and I bet anything GM Joe actually prefers MacDermid and Payne over KoKo.

I think he's going for the Boston/LA mold. Mix in a few highly skilled guys, but have a ton of grit and size.

Based on the D they target in the draft and trades though, he seems to be trying to get an even mix of skilled, excellent skates and bigger, meaner bruisers.
