ES GOALS FOR

2nd 6:07 Jordan Staal (Faulk)
+1 Dwyer - This goal was all about the screen. Price got a great view of Dwyer's butt as the puck went by.
+1 Jordan Staal - Never mind the shot, look at that "Staal mouth" celebration!
+1 Faulk - Nice job keeping the puck in at the line.

2nd 10:27 Bowman (Welsh)
+1 Bowman - This was simply a shooter beating the goalie in the purest way. Just blasted it by him.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 3:22 Prust (Emelin, Eller)
-1 Bowman - Brutal way to get dangled. Ouch.
-1 Jokinen - Lost the defensive-zone faceoff cleanly, then left the eventual goal scorer on the doorstep so that he could make an ineffective sliding block attempt.

1st 8:19 Gorges (Prust, Subban)
My first reaction was to give Jordan a minus here, but really, what can you do about a perfect saucer pass over your stick? He was in perfect position, but that's an incredibly difficult play to make on a flying puck at close range. I'm inclined to not give a minus for being victimized by a near-unstoppable play.

3rd 6:09 Eller (Gorges, Prust)
-1 Wallace - NHL.com has the overhead view of this goal, which makes it look particularly bad on Wallace. He has to read that play better and get the right assignment.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 12:44 Harrison (Skinner, Jordan Staal)
+1 Jokinen - This is a beauty of a play by Jokinen, stealing the puck and then feathering a perfect little pass off the boards for Staal.
+1 Jordan Staal - Pretty clear that his shot was intended more to create a rebound than anything.
+1 Harrison - This is the first time I can remember him jumping a rush like that. Go figure that he would score a goal that way.
I can't see Skinner doing anything substantial enough here to warrant a plus.

2nd 4:42 Tlusty (Semin, Ellis)
+1 Ellis - Oh yeah, I guess goalies can get pluses too. :) What a beauty of a lead pass.
+1 Semin - Just a picture-perfect pass through the defender.
+1 Tlusty - This guy needs to take Semin out for dinner after every game. Holy cow does he ever get a lot of golden scoring chances lately.

2nd 11:09 Terry (Eric Staal, Sanguinetti)
I hate doing this to Terry, but this one doesn't count as it was directly off the end of a PP sequence.

2nd 17:15 Skinner (Gleason, Jokinen)
+1 Gleason - Was that Tim Gleason leading a rush down to the goal line!?
+1 Skinner - Nice hands in front.

ES GOALS AGAINST

3rd 0:22 Kovalchuk (Fayne, Greene)
-1 Faulk - Tough break, but that's one reason why you square up on defense.

3rd 4:21 Elias (Zidlicky, Volchenkov)
Goaltender Error - Ellis - Also a tough break with that bizarre trajectory, but goalies are expected to get deflections that occur that far away from the net. This one is pretty borderline, though.

+1 Corvo - Caught the goalie napping.
+1 Eric Staal - Nice clean faceoff win to begin the possession.

2nd 5:55 Nash (Harrison, Bowman)
+1 Harrison - He looks like a confident quarterback at the point on this sequence, not bad.
+1 Nash - Good to see him rewarded for the solid forecheck he put on Schilling just beforehand.
+1 Dwyer - Provided a key bit of puck support and beat Ward out of the corner.

2nd 18:26 Nash (Dwyer, Gleason)
+1 Dwyer - He's always had speed and hustle, which were on display here, but he's becoming a decent playmaker as well.
+1 Nash - Solid finish.

Wasn't it actually Ennis who kept the puck in the zone? That's what Tripp said, at least. If so I don't think Gleason should get a + for having a shot blocked.

Now that you mention it, maybe Ennis got it with his stick. I really can't tell from that angle. I'm going to try and find a better clip and get back to this one.

Circling back to this, the only replay I can find online is the Canes feed.

(Oddly, nobody in an MSG market thought this was worth putting on YouTube :sarcasm:)

The more I watch it, the more I'm pretty sure that Ennis touched the puck rather than Gleason. But from that replay, it's just not possible to be certain, and it does make the difference between being a nice recovery by Gleason and being just dumb luck. Not much choice but to give it a margin-of-error point and leave it up to the viewer how they want to score it at home.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 1:14 - Semin (Eric Staal, Tlusty)
+1 Semin - The three forwards pretty much formed a textbook offensive triangle here. Everyone did their part, including Semin with the easy goal from in front.
+1 Staal - Again, textbook triangle positioning and passing.
+1 Tlusty - This guy really has a nose for doing the little things that perfectly complete Semin's and Staal's games -- little things like following Semin to the net for loose pucks.

1st 8:17 - Dwyer (Gleason, Corvo)
+1 Dwyer - A perfect redirection on what may have been the slowest-moving goal in NHL history.
+1 Gleason - As goofily slow as that shot was, it really was perfectly set up for a redirection, so he deserves some legit kudos here.
+1 Corvo - In terms of tiny things that an offensive quarterback can do to set up his teammates, that little hesitation before swinging the puck to Gleason helped draw the Caps defense off by a half-step and opened the passing lanes a bit wider.
+1 Nash - Nice faceoff win.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 5:56 Crabb (Volpatti, Alzner)
-1 Sanguinetti - This was right in Sanguinetti's face. An NHL defenseman is expect to squash that play 10 times out of 10.
-1 Faulk - Uncharacteristically lost Volpatti along the boards, allowing the pass.
-1 Brent - What's the point of standing in a passing lane if you're going to just watch the puck float by?

3rd 17:44 Ribeiro (Ovechkin, Carlson)
-1 Corvo - It's too bad all minuses are equal. This was a particularly egregious one.

ES GOALS FOR

3rd 6:21 Eric Staal (Semin)
+1 Semin - It's pretty amazing that this might be his SECOND best assist of the season. So far.
+1 Eric Staal - Can you imagine what must have went through his head when that puck landed on his tape? I'm surprised he didn't stop skating and go back to give Semin a high-five.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 10:54 Johnson (Killorn, Conacher)
-1 Gleason - Holy smokes. This is the kind of defensive play you expect from a kid with a video game. Chases the puck carrier all the way out to the blue line... that's just terribad.
-1 Hall - I really hope he just didn't know the Canes' numbers well yet in his first game. Maybe he didn't realize it was a defenseman skating away from the slot like a winger, and that would explain why he didn't make the elementary read to cover Gleason's back.

2nd 6:35 Palat (Salo, Johnson)
-1 Hall - Got beaten a little too cleanly out of the corner by Johnson, which seemed to catch all 4 of his teammates flat-footed.
-1 McBain - Also got beaten out of the corner, and lost inside position on his man at Ellis' doorstep.
-1 Pitkanen - Not sure why he felt the need to jump in as a fifth man on the same side of the ice, just to cover a guy who was 10 feet in front of Wallace and clearly not a threat. But the result was that when he recovered, he put a beauty of a screen on Ellis, which is most striking in the ice-level replay. If Pitkanen and McBain are properly positioned, Ellis makes a pretty easy save here.

2nd 12:55 Thompson (Crombeen, Carle)
-1 McBain - I don't know what got in to the Carolina defensemen in this game, but this is another case of bafflingly poor positioning and awareness.

3rd 3:54 Purcell (St. Louis, Hedman)
-1 Harrison - More of the same.

ES GOALS FOR

1st 19:09 Eric Staal (Pitkanen, Semin)
+1 Eric Staal - This was just a great all-round shift. Did well on the boards, made a really creative play to get the puck to the point, and disappeared into the weeds before finishing with a deceptively difficult shot.
+1 Pitkanen - Pinched to help keep the opportunity alive, then switched sides and made a perfect play from there.
+1 Semin - Also part of the board work that led to the opportunity.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 11:06 Stepan (Hagelin, Callahan)
-1 Pitkanen - Burnt badly out of the corner.
-1 Nash - This is kind of a goofy play by Nash, biting hard on a less than spectacular deke.
Skinner comes close to a minus here, but it's pretty difficult to get to a puck that's coming fast on the backhand from close range. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for being in the right spot, but wrong handedness.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 12:57 Henrique (Kovalchuk, Larsson)
-1 Gleason - It took a few views to figure out exactly what happened during this cluster-bleep of a defensive stand. The basic problem is Gleason playing atrociously bad hockey -- getting caught flat-footed at the blue line, plodding back into position too late to stop the scoring chance, clearing the puck directly to an opponent, then LEAVING his position just in time for the puck to come right back and end up in the net. Epic badness.
-1 Skinner - I will give him credit for what he was trying to accomplish here, which was to be a hero, but sound positional hockey would have been a better choice than skating right past the biggest scoring threat on the ice (Kovalchuk) in order to try and beat his own defenseman to the pass, then lingering in the crease as a second goalie while nobody covers the point. He's trying, but maybe a little too hard.

2nd 13:38 Harrold (Elias, Zajac)
-1 Harrison - His lack of speed and mobility was abused by Zajac on this sequence.
-1 Sanguinetti - We should probably be used to it by now, but this guy really looks bad sometimes. I mean, those aren't exactly world-class moves causing him to flail around like a fish out of water.
-1 Eric Staal - Classic case of getting tunnel vision rather than having one's head on a swivel to see the open shooter.

Totals
-1 Gleason
-1 Harrison
-1 Sanguinetti
-1 Skinner
-1 Eric Staal

ES GOALS FOR

1st 6:06 Tlusty (Nash, Brent)
The goal was scored just as time expired on a Winnipeg penalty, and by the TV clock should actually have been recorded as a PPG. No changes.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 13:44 Jokinen (Kane, Hainsey)
-1 Eric Staal - Poor job contesting Kane in his own zone, which set up the speed of the Winnipeg rush.
-1 McBain - Just a terrible pinch, something a veteran should not be doing against a player of Kane's caliber.
-1 Pitkanen - He was in a bad spot to begin with, but ultimately it's the defenseman's job to cut off that centering pass.

2nd 16:39 Antropov (Burmistrov, Kane)
-1 Eric Staal - Just a terrible unforced turnover in the middle of the ice.
-1 Corvo - Wut. I'd like to give Joe the benefit of the doubt here and blame that one on the bad ice at PNC, but that was Sanguinetti-esque...
-1 Semin - Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Semin gets his first minus of the season for a drive-by, standing-straight-up swipe at the loose puck that should have been cleared with ease.

3rd 12:37 Kane (unassisted)
-1 McBain - Own-goal.

ES GOALS FOR

3rd 6:55 Jordan Staal (Ruutu, Corvo)
+1 Jordan Staal - He was probably the only guy in the building who had the slightest idea of a scoring chance on that play. Nice solo effort against some pretty bad defense.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 3:58 Bozak (Kessel, Van Riemsdyk)
-1 Skinner - Very poorly contested, verging on lazy, play along the wall to cause an unnecessary turnover.
-1 Jordan Staal - Simply gets beaten by Bozak on the doorstep, first losing track of him and then losing the stick battle.

3rd 14:35 Phaneuf (Lupul, Bozak)
Scored 3-4 seconds after the PP ended, and before Eric Staal got back into the play. No changes.

3rd 16:50 Lupul (unassisted)
-1 Corvo - Basically the opposite of Jordan's goal. Corvo just flails around and watches Lupul poster-ize his goalie.

Totals
-1 Corvo
-1 Skinner

3-1 Win

ES GOALS FOR

1st 1:06 Semin (Ruutu, Eric Staal)
+1 Tlusty - Takes a hit to make the correct cycle play, and makes a well-timed line change to boot.
+1 Eric Staal - Wins the board battle and wraps the puck into a scoring position.
+1 Semin - He actually beat two Jets to the puck here.
+1 Ruutu - I almost didn't give him one on the basis that he didn't do a whole lot other than get his stick chopped. But, if he isn't crashing the net hard, the play isn't remotely dangerous and becomes an easy clear for Little.
+1 Gleason - Just before the portion of the goal that you see in the highlight, Gleason made a key pinch to keep the puck in the zone and then harassed Ladd just enough to prevent a clearing pass. That led to an extended possession and eventually the goal.

1st 9:40 Jokinen (Pitkanen, Ruutu)
Pretty sure there was actually still PP time on the board when the puck went in. In any case, it's a de facto PPG.

3rd 0:28 Eric Staal (Semin)
+1 Semin - Really solid forechecking job, and a beauty of a backhand pass.
+1 Tlusty - As usual, doing the small things right. Forces Bogosian to put the puck behind his own net, then goes right to the crease to set a screen for the shot.
+1 Eric Staal - He has such ridiculous chemistry with these guys.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 1:26 Jokinen (Kane, Miettinen)
-1 Jordan Staal - This is just a brutal shift for Jordan. Loses the offensive-zone faceoff cleanly, can't keep up with Kane through the neutral zone, and then gets beaten to a slow-moving puck in front of the net.
-1 Pitkanen - Not a smart pinch. He has to be aware of the best player on the ice being right behind him and heading up ice.
-1 McBain - Weak, stick-waving defense. If he's not going to body Kane off, then he at least needs to play the pass. He got stuck in no-man's-land and defended nothing in particular.

Totals
+2 Semin
+2 Eric Staal
+2 Tlusty

ES GOALS FOR

1st 3:38 Jordan Staal (Dwyer, Bellemore)
+1 Dwyer - Uses his speed to split the defenders, draw a penalty and pick up an assist all at once.
+1 Jordan Staal - Well placed shot to the far side.
+1 Bellemore - Not a pretty assist, but he recognized the Habs had overloaded his side and put the puck in a general area where his forwards could do something useful with it.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 1:46 Halpern (Beaulieu)
-1 Pitkanen - The troubles with this sequence started when Joni looked right at a Hab on the blue line and backed into him, apparently on purpose, turning a simple 3-on-3 into a difficult 2-on-2. He then drifts into the zone, turns over a loose puck to the point, and screens Peters on the final shot. He was only 1 minute into his first shift of the period, but looked totally gassed here for some reason.
-1 Nash - Nice job covering back on the rush, but unforced spills into the corner aren't helpful. That put Jokinen in an awkward spot.

I'm not holding this one against Bellemore, seeing as he blocked the initial shot and simply didn't see which way the puck bounced.

3rd 10:58 Pacioretty (Bouillon)
-1 Dwyer - All he had to do was keep Pacioretty to the outside and wait for help. Instead he went for an ill-advised poke-check and got completely dusted.

Totals
+1 Bellemore
+1 Jordan Staal
-1 Nash
-1 Pitkanen

ES GOALS FOR

1st 11:32 Tlusty (Sanguinetti, Semin)
+1 Sanguinetti - This is Sangs at his best, making a good first pass and then rushing up the center lane to make a play down the slot. If he could do this all game, he'd be a superstar.
+1 Semin - How much has Semin carried his line? Look at how he draws a triple-team before dishing the puck.
+1 Tlusty - Apparently he was the only guy out of 3 who was interested in getting that rebound.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 19:21 Ovechkin (Backstrom, Carlson)
Goaltender Error - Ellis - I know it's Ovie and all, but a wrist shot from above the faceoff circle simply has to be stopped.

2nd 4:26 Green (Backstrom)
-1 Skinner - Floating along through the neutral zone, watching while one of the most dangerous offensive defensemen in the game jumps the play and scores right in front of him.

2nd 11:06 Ovechkin (Backstrom, Johansson)
-1 Pitkanen - Turns the puck over and then fails to defend the centering pass.
-1 Sanguinetti - Holy bad hockey sense. Instead of making a hairpin turn to get back after the turnover, he coasts through an obscenely wide curve, while making a token lateral attack at the puck. Somehow, on a slow turnover that happened on HIS side of the red line, he still ends up 15 feet behind the goal scorer.

Patrick Dwyer is looking pretty good by this metric. Decent offensive production, and doesn't screw up much on defense. Even on the Pacioretty goal a few days ago, he got burned because he was back and covering for a defenseman.

If a winger doesn't look good by his metric, that's pretty telling. You have to be some kind of terrible in your own zone to get recognized as a major the cause of several goals against.

His pluses are obviously a surprise though. Gives a good indication of how much Skinnerband Jordan are underperforming.
