2011 U18 Team Canada - Preliminary Lineup
Ok, I was watching the Mississauga-London game last night on TV and unless you were a really die-hard Mississauga fan that soon proved to much to watch. So I put together a preliminary list of possible players for Team Canada for the upcoming U18’s. The list consists of players from teams likely to miss the playoffs or who were the 2nd seed (going into last night) in 1st round match-ups. As there are likely to be upsets, this list just gives you an idea of the level of players available to Team Canada.

What is scary is the lack of decent prospects for goal. Except for Eric Williams (Prince Albert), Robert Steeves (Acadie-Bathurst), Michael Morrison (Kitchener) and maybe Mac Engel (Spokane), the remaining 1993 Canadian born prospects have really not performed at a level where you would pick them for anything. That is why I chose Malcolm Subban (2012 draft year and yes, PK’s brother) as the backup. Other possible candidates include Franky Pallazzese (Kingston - 27-0-3.90-.897) and Subban’s team-mate Tyson Teichmann (36-0-4.20-.881). Team Canada may in fact go with Teichmann in spite of his terrible season as he was Team Canada’s gold medal winning goalie at the Ivan Hlinka tournament. If anybody has better ideas for goal, Team Canada and I would be glad to hear them.

Hockey Canada head scout Kevin Pendegrast on the Pipeline show right now discussing this exact topic.

He admits they are even looking at midget goalies across Canada. Tells you how week that area is for this group.

He says that Bell is a lock if the Pats are out of the playoffs.

He says Scarlett is going in the wrong direction in regards to progress.

Says that Murray is absolutely on the radar for the blueline.

Admits there are 8-10 1994 players that could make the team as underagers.

That is kind of weird. I was trying to be funny when I said Team Canada would be happy to hear any better ideas. But for Hockey Canada in general and Mr. Pendegrast in particular it must be getting kinda serious. Not just this U18 but Team Canada's U20 haven't had an impact goalie since Steve Mason and Carry Price were the goalies (not in the same year). It seems it is getting worse instead of better in the goalie department. Maybe, Hockey Canada has to do like they did in Sweden to turn the development situation around.

Forsberg out of PG could be an option if the Cougars miss the playoffs?

The 2 goalies in Brandon could be considered, both have done ok.

Colin Smith from Kamloops has put up some decent numbers and the Blazers could miss the playoffs.

Actually, Danault plays for Victoriaville's Tigres. And they are going into the playoffs, could be going further than most people think. He might not be available.

Ryan Murphy would be a nice addition? Kitchener could get bounced?

A top 3 or 4 of Murphy, Murray, Bell and Harrington wouldnt be a bad start!

Subban is playing well right now too in net!

I love your blueline, although Griffin Reinhart is still going to be a big questionmark as to whether or not his wrist is fully healed by the time this tourney rolls around. I hope it is.

And if this team is relying on Eric Williams in goal, it could be trouble at the old mill. I've seen him 4-5 times live this year and IMO he is the best 17 year old goalie in the WHL this year, but that's not saying much. A very weak WHL goalie crop.

I would have to think that Laurant Brossoit or possibly Liam Liston would be a better option for Canada in goal than Williams. However, Brandon is ahead 2-1 in the series and Liston might be moving to round 2 against the Blades???

The way the 67's are playing so far in the playoffs, Cody Ceci and Sean Monahan could be available

Is there any precedence to hockey canada picking non-chl players to participate in this?

I would think a guy like Phillipe Hudon, among others playing in the US could crack that team.

Griffin will be there.

I am hoping Jesse Forsberg gets the go ahead too.

Hockey Canada will take anybody they deem good enough even if they are not with the CHL - examples include Dylan Olsen (AJHL), Kyle Turris (BCHL) and Dion Knelson (CCHA).

As for Hudon, his year disappointed many scouts so he may or may not be considered. One Canadian playing US high school who didn’t disappoint is Mike McKee (6’4 230). Another possibility is Dylan Simpson of the University of North Dakota.

Yeah, I know Griffin will be. Notice my post was from over 3 weeks ago, when it wasn't still known for certain when Griff would be back.

Yes and Sean Couturier's Dad is starting to pay for his mistake of starting Olivier Roy instead of Robert Steeves in Acadie-Bathurst so maybe we will finally have the two goalies we need for the U18's - Robert Steeves and Malcolm Subban.

Here are a couple of snippets from the LaPresse article courtesy of Google translate.

Subban learns the ropes with a coach originally from Laval, Sebastien Farrese.
"Malcolm is like PK in a goalie uniform, says the Bulls' goaltending coach. With his style and because he is the brother of PK, it leaves no one indifferent wherever he goes. "

His work has not gone unnoticed. Hockey Canada has hired him to work with the U20 and U18 teams, and also with the National Team.

"He does not know yet," says Malcolm Farrese about Subban, but the team of under 18 is interested in him in anticipation of the World Championship. It will have a choice between him and our other goalkeeper, Tyson Teichmann. "

Yes and Sean Couturier's Dad is paying for his mistake of playing his 2nd best goalie (Olivier Roy) instead of his best goalie (Robert Steeves). So we might have the two U18 goalies we need - Steeves and Subban. (Confession: yes my wife is a Steeves and yes they are all related; even I, as a spouse, am in the Steeves family book).
