2010 Spengler Cup Champions: SKA St. Petersburg
December 26th-December 31st 2010

Spengler Cup is an annual ice hockey tournament held in Davos, Switzerland. First held in 1923, the Spengler Cup is often cited as the oldest invitational ice hockey tournament in the world. The event is hosted by Swiss team HC Davos and played each year in Davos, Switzerland, between Christmas and New Year's Day.

It was originally devised by Dr. Carl Spengler as a mean to promote teams from German-speaking Europe, who might have suffered ostracism in the aftermath of World War I.
Eventually, the tournament grew well beyond expectations. Many of Europe's most prestigious clubs and national programs have appeared, including Soviet, Swedish and Czechoslovakian powerhouses.
Among non-European organizations, Team Canada, Team USA, nationally ranked NCAA schools, reigning Calder Cup and OHA champions, and even Team Japan (in 1971 as hosts of the upcoming Sapporo Winter Olympics) have travelled to Davos throughout the years.

?
No, this is the board for international tournaments.

well, it was the international tournament treat ... but a very intellegent guy just took the treat, move it from "hockey talk by country" to "general hockey disscusion" and give him the new name "world junior championship" :dunno:

That happens during every big international event. After WJC they will rename it and put it back again.

I'd be willing to bet a decent amount of money that any of those Spengler Cup teams would beat any of the WJC teams, but WJC is ofcourse the more interesting tournament of these two.

Obviously, these are men playing pro hockey making a living. Many have played in the NHL, KHL and Europe's top leagues for years which of course is higher then most of the levels these kids are playing at.

Actually there was a game last week between Russia U-20 and Spartak Moskau. so we already had that match-up.

You just missed a good opportunity to lose a decent amount of money. :sarcasm:

oh, i didn't notice that they did during the olympics .... ok thanks for the information

anyways

i visited the khl game in davos (23.dec). st. petersburg played against moscow. of course, the game wasn't so physical, but it was a great technical game :handclap: i'm still becharmed from SKA st.petersburg. this guys are unbelievable fast and have big names in the team. i guess, they gonna win but i hope it will be davos ;)

Love this tournament! It really flies under the radar because of the WJC, particularly here in Canada, but it is always fun to watch. It's a different style of hockey, but always fast and high scoring. Though it doesn't always have the big name talent of other tourneys, I also find it refreshing to see the journeymen style of player that has made a good living in Europe or the minors get a chance to represent Canada. It's also interesting to see some former NHL'ers show up with these European club teams and have to play against their own country. I wish more people here watched this, they don't know what they're missing!

Part of the reason it is unheard of is because the last few years sportsnet has not done a great job on broadcasting it.They would show canada's games plus the final.Tsn will be showing all of canadas games plus all the play off and medal games.

And why only Switzerland players? There are good and many canadiens in Sweden, Russia, Germany, Finland also..

My guess would be that the clubs are very reluctant to let their players go there (like the NHL teams don't want their players to go to the WCH). However, the Spengler Cup is too big in Switzerland for the NLA teams to really refuse, considering that even the league stops for that time.

Finally done!:D I'll try to keep the title and scores updated in the first post for as long as the forum permits me to edit it. I also tagged it as a "GDT", as I doubt individual GDTs will be needed for this. Last year the thread didn't get past a couple pages if I remember correctly (which is unfortunate).

No problem. I had to do a couple searches myself to double check that this was indeed the international hockey forum.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Really looking forward to seeing some guys like Yashin, Hasek, and former TML Mark Bell again.

The Vaillant Arena is one of my favorite arenas as well. Never been but judging by the pictures I've seen, it looks very neat. Need to make my way down to Switzerland one day to watch a game there.

Yeah, it seems like a very unique arena, unlike most of the modern 'multi-sport' arenas or "entertainment centers".

Spengler Cup is a great tournament; Christmas holidays, entertaining hockey, great atmosphere, tradition, Eurosport's British commentator(s)...

Yorick Treille of Sparta is Frenchman, not German. And correct name of SKA's forward is Cajanek instead of Chaynek ;)

Both are fixed, thanks.:)

The Treille one was my bad. The misspelling of Čajánek wasn't my doing though, for whatever reason the Spengler Cup site has it spelled wrong.
